Vermer Brown
Vermer Jean Talley Brown, 66, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, a deaconess, a member and director of Lydia Circle Choir, youth director, director of Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation in Hutchinson, Kan., and was employed at the student union at the University of Arkansas.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with burial at U.S National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, M.C. Brown; four daughters, Vickie Goodman, Madalyn Warren, Cheryl Anne Brown and Verna Renna Bell; a son, Terry Brown; her mother, Ocie Washington Saulsberry; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Keith Bell, Najee Goodman, Robert Warren, Rick and Andre Taylor, Demar Brown, Mike Robinson and Earl Chatman.
Geneva Hammond
CHARLESTON — Geneva Hammond, 85, of Charleston died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in a Greenhurst nursing home. She was born April 21, 1916, In Booneville. She was a homemaker and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Charleston Chapter No. 16 and the Potts Freewill Baptist Church. She was the widow of Otha Hammond.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Garden of Memories in Charleston.
She is survived by a son, James Hammond of Charleston; four granddaughters, Susan Potts and April Edwards, both of Charleston, Patty Stiles of Branch and Carol Sparks of Fort Smith; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Karl and Karl Mark Potts, Mike and Michael Stiles and Brian and Bruce Womack.
The body may be viewed beginning at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star Charleston Chapter No. 16.
Edythe Virginia Janczar
Edythe Virginia Janczar, 81, of Roland died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker, a Baptist and the widow of Stanley Janczar.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today in Cottonwood Freewill Baptist Church near Muldrow under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Muldrow. The body will be cremated.
She is survived by four daughters, Frances Janczar of Missouri, Teresa Kinnel of California, Virginia Fouquette of Nevada and Meredith Dyer of Oklahoma; a son, Stanley Joseph Janczar of Virginia; a sister, Barbara Ward of California; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Joni Mendenhall, 38, of Fort Smith died Friday, March 8, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Lupus Foundation.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby; two daughters, Mandi and Jessica Mendenhall, both of the home; her parents, John and Claudia Milam of Greenwood; two sisters, Connie Cross of Dayton, Nev., and Debbie Pound of Baton Rouge, La.; and a brother, Butch Pound of Jenny Lind.
Pallbearers will be Chris Morris, Mark and John Mendenhall, Johnny Anderson, Doug Kinslow, Randy and Kenny Milam and Britt Varner.

Frances E. Baker, 87, of Fort Smith died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface Catholic Keenagers, the Registered Nurses Association and Arkansas Catholic Professional Business Women. She was a retired registered nurse for St. Edward Mercy Medical Center and was retired from the Fort Smith Symphony.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Eddie Tucker of Fort Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Elaine Baker of Greenwood; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-graandchild.
Pallbearers will be Tracy, David and Todd Tucker and Brad, Blake and Brian Baker.

Veatrice Denney, 75, of Fort Smith died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Fort Smith.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest; three sons, Gary and Bruce Denney, both of Fort Smith, and Mark Denney of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Phyllis Tobey of Muncie, Ind.; two brothers, Fred Duncan Jr. of Muncie and Ogle Duncan of Florida; and three grandchildren, Jeff, Amanda and Chris Denney.

POTEAU — Carmond Walter “Nick” Nichols, 69, of Poteau died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Van Buren. He was born Oct. 29, 1932. He worked for Kansas City Southern Railroad for 44 years and was a member of the Lions Club and First Baptist Church in Heavener.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Oakland cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Cecile; four sons, Bobby Nichols of Dallas, Randy Nichols and Brett Nichols, both of Heavener, and Roger Nichols of Poteau; his mother, Marie Nichols of Poteau; a sister, Pat Boggs of California; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bobby, Randy, Brett and Roger Nichols, Paul Stottsberry, Bob Lindstrom and Perry Renfro.

POTEAU — Robert Lafayette Rankins, Jr., 75, of Poteau died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Independence, Mo. He was born Feb. 17, 1927. He was a 30-year veteran of the Army, was awarded two Purple Hearts and was a member of First Baptist Church in Poteau.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Kuni; two daughters, Debra Warren of Independence, Mo., and Robyn Little of Mount Pleasant, Texas; a son, Michael Rankins of Dallas; three sisters, Louise Cotton and Doris Roberts, both of Wright City, Okla., and Yvonne Tidmore of Ada, Kan.; a brother, Raymond Rankins of Broken Bow, Okla.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Johnstone Hughes
ANDERSON, S.C. — Johnstone Erskine Hughes, 83, of Anderson, S.C., formerly of Fort Smith, died Tuesday, March, 5, 2002, in Anderson. He was born in New York.
The body was cremated under the direction of Cremation Society of South Carolina of Greenville, S.C.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Pamela Hughes of Anderson, S.C.; and two brothers, Thomas F. Hughes of Westport, Conn., and Robert Hughes of San Antonio.

OZARK — Dakota Lynn Contant, infant daughter of Jessica Cowan and Zachariah B. Contant, both of Ozark, died Monday, March, 4, 2002, in Ozark. She was born Nov. 19, 2001, in Clarksville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Mount View cemetery in Ozark.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Colton Taylor Wade Contant of Ozark; maternal grandparents, Brenda Cowan and Harold Phillips of Hunt, Amanda and Johnny Cowan of Altus; and paternal grandparents, Cliff Contant and Elaine Contant, both of Ozark.

OKTAHA, Okla. — Joyce Janice Rector, 64, of Oktaha, Okla., died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was born June 4, 1937, in Roland. She attended school at Liberty and was a homemaker and the widow of Grady Rector.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Highland cemetery in Inola, Okla., under the direction of Amis-Kennard Funeral Service in Catoosa, Okla.
She is survived by a daughter, Reta Smith of Tulsa; two sons, Fred Rector of Tulsa and Ronnie Rector of Octaha, Okla.; six sisters, Imogene Fuller, Lousie Butcher, Vivian Gibbs, Loretta Hendricks, Gatha Baker and Brenda Reichard, all of Fort Smith; a brother, Gene London of Sallisaw; and 10 grandchildren.

HEAVENER — Gladys Ellen Higgins, 96, of Heavener died Friday, March 8, 2002, in Heavener. She was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Loving cemetery in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by a son, John Higgins of West Helena; a sister, Jean Blevins of Wenatchee, Wash.; a brother, Paul Blevins of Heavener; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Donald McKinney
YUKON, Okla. — Donald Ray McKinney, of Yukon, Okla., died Wednesday, March 6, 2002. He was born March 16, 1929, in Heavener. He attended Poteau High School and attended Eastern State University, receiving his bachelor’s in education, and earned a master’s degree in education from Southwestern State University. He served in the Air Force in occupied Japan and during the Korean War, having achieved final rank as staff sergeant and received the Japan Occupation Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He was a retired field service officer and abatement judge for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, oil and gas division, was a petroleum engineer for the Birdwell Co., a subsidiary of Seismograph Service Corp. of Tulsa; he worked with the Disabled American Veterans, where he received the State DAV’s 2001 award as Volunteer of the Year, the Yukon Salvation Army Senior Citizens Center and the Meals on Wheels and was a member of First Baptist Church in Yukon.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church in Yukon with burial and with military honors at the Yukon cemetery under the direction of Yanda & Son Funeral Home of Yukon.
He is survived by his wife, Ethyl; two daughters, Deborah Painter of Van Buren and Cheryl Cuzco of Fort Smith; a son, Derek McKinney of Vancouver, Wash.; two stepchildren, Vickie Shawcross of Higgins, Texas, and Clendon Detrixhe of Yukon; a brother, William E. McKinney of Bixby, Okla.; five grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

GREENWOOD — Mary Louise Childers, 73, of Greenwood died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in her home. She was a retired bookkeeper, a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood, the Order of Eastern Star and the Quilters Guild. She was the widow of Billy Jack Childers.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church in Greenwood with burial at Steep Hill cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Leeann Driscoll of Greenwood; two sons, Henry Childers of Seattle and Cliff Childers of Fayetteville; a sister, Pauline Childress of Fort Smith; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth, B.J., Heather and Jessica Childers, Aubree, Emily and Sarah Driscoll; and two great-grandchildren.

SPIRO — Herman “Bill” Graham, 68, of Spiro died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Spiro. He was an Army veteran, retired fro, OK Feed Mills as a pellet mill operator and was of the Assembly faith.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday in Lakeview Baptist Church with burial at Short Mountain cemetery in Keota under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
He is survived by his wife, Retha; four daughters, Tammy Graham of Spiro, Vickie Hansen of Poteau, Kathy Dippel of Panama and Diane Hixson; four sons, Wayne Hassien of Lafayette, La., Loyal “Junie” and Phillip Mantooth, both of Spiro, and Jerry; five sisters, June McDonlad and Barbara Chapple, both of Spiro, Thelma Jean Hope of Fort Smith, Murlene Stobie of Montana and Margaret Fleege of Tahlequah; a brother, Harlan Graham of Spiro; 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

MONROE, La. — Mary Frances Craddick, 93, of Monroe, La., formerly of Mena, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Louisiana. She was born Jan. 22, 1909, in Ola. She was a former Polk County businesswoman and a former employee of the Mena Airport, a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and a homemaker. She was the widow of John Craddick.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by a daughter, Frances Oglesby; a brother, Stephen E. Via; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Jan Oglesby.
The family will visit with friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.
