Sue M. Pigg
On Sunday morning, June 2, 2002, Sue M. Pigg departed this life at 95 years of age. A descendant of pioneer Crawford County families, she was the daughter of George Wallace Hays and Minnie Vinsant. Born on the Fourth of July, 1906, Sue was the sister of Ardia White, Tressie Webster, Georgia Prue, High Buck Hays and Jim Hays, all now deceased.
Early on as a pre-teen, Sue demonstrated the spunkiness that was a hallmark of her character by riding alone on horseback from her rural home to weekly piano lessons with Professor Kelton in Van Buren. She was educated in rural Crawford County schools and the Draughon’s Business College.
On April 16, 1934, Sue and Atha Pigg married
in Van Buren. Their happy union of more than 51 years produced two daughters, Janice Loftin of Van Buren and Diana Evans of Fort Smith; a son, Atha Lamar of Staten Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Tagged early on by her first grandchild as “Susie” rather than Grandma, the name stuck as it perfectly characterized the eternal youthfulness of her spirit and the playful, expansive love she freely shared with her family and her myriad friends. Sue has been a disciple from her early teen years, first becoming a member of Alexander Memorial Christian Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher and pianist, encouraging and supporting numerous young church members as they developed their faith and musical talents. For the past 16 years, she has been a member of Wood Memorial Christian Church.
For all of her adult life, Sue held continuing memberships in the Rena Home Demonstration Club and the Fidelity Chapter of the Eastern Star, serving as Fidelity’s organist for many years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren with burial at Pevehouse cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her nephews, Jim Buck, Wally, Darrell, Alvy, Tommy and Elliot Hays.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tilsey Byram, Jess Staggs, Craig Henderson and fellow members of her Christian Women’s Fellowship, the Eastern Star and Rena Home Demonstration Club.
Flossie Wilcox
MENA — Flossie Lee Wilcox, 84, of Mena died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Mena. She was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Ink. She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church. She was the widow of Bert Bodie Wilcox.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Concord cemetery in Ink under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by two sons, Arnold and Floyd Wilcox, both of Mena; a sister, Wilba Embry of Mena; a brother, Hollis Rosson of Acorn; and five grandchildren.
Melvin Radcliff
HOLIDAY ISLAND — Melvin Harrison Radcliff, 84, of Holiday Island died Tuesday, June 4, 2002. He was born March 22, 1918, in Dexter, Kan. He was a World War II veteran and served as a captain and a pilot in the Air Force. In 1959, he opened Radcliff Volkswagen in Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Funeral Home in Topeka, Kan.
He is survived by his wife, LaVera; a daughter, Christine Anderson of Castro Valley, Calif.; two sons, Mel Kent Radcliff of Holiday Island and Mark Harrison Radcliff of Tulsa; two grandchildren, Amanda and Sean Anderson, both of Castro Valley, Calif.
The body will lie in state from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends at this time.

GREENWOOD — Ollie R. Lee, 80, of Greenwood died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in her home. She was a homemaker, a member of Howard Hill Assembly of God and the widow of Curtis Lee Sr.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Howard Hill Assembly of God with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by four daughters, Bonnie Townsond of Oklahoma City, Emily Bastina of Jasper, Ga., Diane Thompson of Bartlesville, Okla., and Sharon Wilson of Barling; two sons, Dennis Otteson of Oklahoma City and Curtis Lee Jr. of Lewisville, Texas; two sisters, Inice M. Johnson of Midwest City, Okla., and Margie Cox of Greenwood; two brothers, Dale Moody of Greenwood and Doyle Moody of Del City, Okla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Jessie Willhite of Greenwood.
Pallbearers will be Steve, Cecil, Albert and Roger Hood, James Smith and Jim Redwine.
The body may be viewed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Audrey Ballard
LAMAR — Audrey Tracey J. Ballard, 83, of Lamar died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in her home. She was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith. She was the widow of William E. Ballard Jr.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel of Clarksville with burial at Minnow Creek cemetery in Lamar.
She is survived by a sister, Therese Glowaski of Elyria, Ohio; two brothers, David Tracey of Elyria, Ohio, and Robert Tracey of Hendersvile, N.C.
George Adamson Jr.
LONOKE — George Thomas “June” Adamson Jr., 67, of Lonoke died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Lonoke. He was born July 15, 1934, in Hope. He was an Army veteran and a self-employed furniture builder.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva; two sons, George Thomas Adamson of Lonoke and John Thomas Adamson of Barling; a sister, Ola Gibson of Jenny Lind; five grandchildren, Tammy Wall, John Paul, Thomas, Brian and Melissa Adamson; and five great-grandchildren.
Verda Mills
SALLISAW — Verda Lou Mills, 90, of Sallisaw died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Sallisaw. She was born July 27, 1911, in Elba. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of James William Mills.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Sallisaw with burial at Akins cemetery northeast of Sallisaw.
She is survived by a son, Wendell Mills of Sallisaw; a half brother, V.A. “Bill” Honeycutt of Sallisaw; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Flossie Dunbar
Flossie Mae Dunbar, 46, of Fort Smith died Saturday, June 1, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Washington cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by three daughters, Tina Owens and Sharla Dunbar, both of Fort Smith, and Angela Dunbar of Oklahoma City; a son, Patrick Dunbar of Fort Smith; four sisters, Elmira Jackson, Ernestine Lowery and Sarah Hastings, all of Lawton, Okla., and Sue Woods of England; three brothers, Clarence Jackson of Lawton, Okla., Herbert Jackson of Cummings and Glenn J. Jackson of Pine Bluff; 14 grandchildren; and a companion, Felton Scott of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Michael and Henry Webster, Edmond McBay, Charles and Amin Fulbright, Albert Crutchfield and Andrew Burns.
Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

Sam Davenport
KINTA — Sam Davenport, 90, of Kinta died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Quinton. He was a rural mail carrier in the Kinta area and a member of Mountain Home Baptist Church. He was the widower of Edith Davenport.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Quinton cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Stigler.
He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Moore of Kinta; two sisters, Margaret Stevens and Faye Hubbard, both of Oklahoma City; and a grandchild, Kristen Moore of Kinta.
Annabel Clay Combs
Annabel Clay Combs, lifelong Fort Smith resident, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at her daughter’s home in Ponca City, Okla. She was 82.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Southside Baptist Church in Fort Smith with the Rev. Ken Overturf officiating. Arrangements are under the directions of Trout Funeral Home of Ponca City, Okla.
Annabel was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Fort Smith to Matt C. and Savannah Georgia Clawson Clay. She was raised in Fort Smith and graduated from Fort Smith schools in 1936. She attended business school and became an accountant-bookkeeper in the tax accounting business. She worked for many years for Harold White, CPA. She kept books up until January 2002.
She was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church of Fort Smith, where she was Sunday school secretary, was active in choir, and served as the music librarian. She enjoyed traveling, music and crocheting.
She is survived by two daughters, the Rev. Dr. Sheila Combs-Francis and her husband, Tom, of Ponca City and Denny Combs of Little Rock; one granddaughter, Anna Combs-Francis of Ponca City; two nephews, Dr. Donald Clay and his wife, Renee, of Fayetteville, Dr. David Clay and his wife, Dr. Beth Clay, of Fayetteville; four cousins, Christy Lou Stipe and her husband, Garland, of Fort Smith, Cathrine Brown of Oklahoma City, Alice Clawson of Fort Smith and Mildred Price of Coffeyville, Kan.; three great-nieces, Savannah Elizabeth Clay, Emma Kathryn Clay and Mary Amelia Clay; one great-nephew, John Thomas Tinsley Clay; and her beloved cat, Sam.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Gene W. Clay.

ALMA — Lorena Mae Kuykendall, 72, of Alma died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church of Alma and a past Worthy Matron for the Order of Eastern Star.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Alma with burial at Alma City cemetery under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by her husband, Jewel; two sons, Gary Don Kuykendall of McAllen, Texas, and Robin Kuykendall of Mountainburg; a sister, Laura Watson of Stuttgart; two brothers, Don Spillman of Van Buren and Clifton Spillman of Bellevue, Wash.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Dewayne and Ronnie Hanna, Tommy and Bill Leverette, James and Don Adams, Jerry Osborne and Randy Deleat.

Pearlie Marie Adams, 62, of Van Buren died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in Van Buren. She was a homemaker and of the Assembly of God faith.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Southside Free Will Baptist Church in Fort Smith with burial at Macedonia cemetery in Pocola under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by five daughters, Karen Stockton of Huntsville, Ala., Pamela Taylor of Fort Smith, Lisa Mundai-Etzkorn and Tammy Wibbing, both of Van Buren, and Lynn Mathis of the home; her mother, Marie Higgins of Fort Smith; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mike Taylor, Otis Strozier, Mike and Claudie Higgins, Jesse Shibley and Gary Shepard.

HEAVENER — Dennis Stacy, 77, of Heavener died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in Norman, Okla. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired carpenter.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener with burial at Mount View Glendale cemetery in Howe.
He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Bandy and Donna Mattox, both of Moore, Okla.; two sons, Gary of Howe and Ron of Jacksonville, Texas; three sisters, Lona Bowman of Heavener, Eudena Bowman and Beulah Victor, both of Poteau; a brother, Gene of Howe; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Ruth Blalock
CHARLESTON — Ruth Blalock, 81, of Charleston died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in Charleston. She was a retired nurses aide at Greenhurst Nursing Home and a member of Catcher Free Will Baptist Church in Van Buren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Branch Free Will Baptist Church with burial at Parks cemetery in Charleston under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
She is survived by five daughters, Nadene Forbes and Patricia Sykes, both of Charleston, Veda Ashing of Spiro, Darlene McCombs of Booneville and Pamela DeMatto of Branch; two sons, Raymond Blalock of Charleston and Glen Blalock of Pine Bluff; a sister, Benettia Alverson of Van Buren; a brother, Jess Mason of Sallisaw; 16 grandchildren, 26 grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

SUBIACO — Clara M. Vonder Heide, 93, of Subiaco died Friday, April 26, 2002, in Paris. She was a retired owner and operator of Vonder Heide Laundry in Subiaco and a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and St. Benedict Mother’s Society. She was the widow of Edward Vonder Heide.
Rosary will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Subiaco.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church with burial at St. Benedict cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Wright of Van Buren, Betty Lou White of Russellville, Carmelita Kremers of Little Rock and Joanita Roper of England; a son, Charles Vonder Heide of Fort Smith; a sister, Betty Zimmer of Fayetteville; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
