Ernest Norton
The Rev. Ernest M. Norton, 93, of Morrilton died Friday, May 13, 2005.
He was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Carlisle, a son of Wil-liam Robert and Birtie Pearl (Young) Norton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pearl (Clark) Norton, and was a retired Assembly of God minister and member of Morrilton First Assembly of God.
Norton was well known for his unique hobby of making apple dolls. He started making the dolls in 1978 and sold them in the Si-Lo Ornamental Iron and Gifts shop in Mountainburg.
He made the clothes himself on an old treadle sewing machine from scrap material his mother has saved years ago. In those days, he dried the apples naturally. Later he used a food dryer.
Norton decided later that the dolls needed a place to sit, so he began making little wooden rocking chairs and
double rockers for the dolls. They are made of cedar and some are styled after the rockers his mother had in her home.
Norton was also a professional ornamental iron worker learning the trade as a welder for mobile home frames.
He became a minister in 1939, and before his retirement, built three churches and pioneered several works. He worked as a carpenter as well and had built some houses.
Norton loved fishing and lived at Lake Overcup on Highway 9. Cooking his fish for friends was another favorite hobby for him.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo (Roberts) Norton; one stepdaughter, Debbie Higgs of North Little Rock; and one stepson, Mark Pearce of Georgia.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Thursday at Morrilton First Assembly of God with Pastor Trent Gabbard and Pastor Brad Brimmer officiating. Burial was at Pine Grove Cemetery
by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Pallbearers were Fred Alexander, Rob Cox, Sam Gibby, Eddy Hodge, Bud Small, and Elbert Williams.
Marie Brashier
Marie (Parker) Coen Brashier, 86, of Fort Smith, a native of Plumerville, died Thursday, July 28, 2005.
She was a member of Park Hill Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph Coen and Herbert L. Brasher.
Survivors include her daughter, Della Yocum of Fort Smith; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Roselawn Cemetery
in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Joe Turner, Eddie Roberson, Ben Conner, Ron Roberts, Grady Rice, and Wayne Carson.
Virgil Chesney
Virgil I. Chesney, 89, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005.
He was born in Yell County Arkansas to Sam Porter and Rosetta (Reed) Chesney. He passed from this life on Aug. 6, 2005, in Claremore, Okla. He mar-ried Edith Fern Ames on Dec. 8, 1982, in Tulsa, Okla.
Virgil was a lifetime member of the Tulsa community. He was a member of the Verdigris Assembly of God. He was a retired electrician for the Sun Oil Co. He loved to fish and hunt and attend church.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Edith, of the home; one stepson, Nathan Copeland and wife Dawna of Claremore, Okla.; two brothers, Oscar Chesney of Glenwood, Ark., and Earl Chesney of Tulsa, Okla; two grandchildren, Johnny Judkins and wife Sharon of Morrilton, Ark., and Teresa Judkins of Tulsa, Okla; two stepgrandchildren, Jonathan and Bryan Copeland of Claremore, Okla.; five great-grandchildren, Kari Tilley and Katie Judkins of Morrilton and Michelle Buntin, Jimmy Buntin, and Brandon Buntin, of Tulsa, Okla.; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lillian; one daughter, Linda; one grandson, Michael; and three sisters.
Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Verdigris Assembly of God with the Rev. Don Labrot officiating. Interment was in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens in Broken Arrow, Okla.
Services were entrusted to Alderwoods-Heath Funeral Home, (918) 446-6633.
‘Jerry’ Crawford
Jarrett L. “Jerry” Crawford, 74, of North Little Rock, died August 6, 2005.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph M. and Mable Crawford. He grew up in Little Rock, where he was a Golden Glove boxer at the Little Rock Boys Club. He was a retired switchman for the Rock Island Railroad. Jerry served in the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer, the USS O’Brien, during the 
Korean War.
Mr. Crawford was a 32nd degree Mason, member of Mount Sinai No. 749 Lodge, VFW, American Legion, and of the Episcopalian faith.
He is survived by his loving companion, Ruby Goodwin; two sons, Jarrett R. Crawford and Jerry Crawford, all of North Little Rock; one daughter, Tina Marie Crawford of Houston, Texas; one brother, Ralph M. Crawford Jr. of North Little Rock; one sister, Louise Souter of Skiatook, Oklahoma; and one grandson, Robert Crawford.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Harris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jackie Jones officiating. Burial was at Robertsville Cemetery
by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Pallbearers were Lester Baker, Lyle Cothern, Robert Crawford, T.J. Henwood, Tom Lee, Chris Cothern, and Brandon Baker.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the Arkansas Hospice for the excellent care Jarrett received in the home and at the Eugene Tobin Veterans Hospital.
Marguerite Cheek
Marguerite B. Cheek, 78, of Atkins died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005.
She was born in Hattieville, Dec. 29, 1926, to William M. (Whit) and Irene Williams May. She retired from the Atkins Nursing Center and was a member of Atkins First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Homer Cheek; two sons, Billy Cheek and Danny Cheek, both of Atkins; one daughter, Wanda Brown of Dover; five grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 today (Wednesday) at the Lemley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Griffith officiating. Burial will be at Atkins City Cemetery
under the direction of Lemley Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be John Mark Brown, Brian Brown, Charles Cheek, Brandon Ford, Mark Brannon, and Lynn Embry. Honorary pallbearers will be the Ruth Sunday School Class at Atkins First Baptist Church, Dr. Chris Horan, and Dr. Dale Barton.

Beulah Clinkscale
Beulah Clinkscale, 85, of Conway, formerly of Morrilton, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005.
She was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Morrilton, the daughter of Shelly and Melinda (Adams) Salsberry. She was a member of Spring Valley Baptist Church. She was the widow of E.D. Clinkscale.
Survivors include one son, Eddie Lee Clinkscale of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Shirley Salsberry; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday at Spring Valley Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Delaney Fleming. Burial was at Spring Valley Cemetery

Gladys Clinkscale
Gladys Annie Clinkscale, 96, of Center Ridge died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005.
She was born Aug. 13, 1908, in Center Ridge, a daughter of Lucy (Gilreath) and Fleet Clink-scale. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and worked for 18 years at the Wrightsville Boys School.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Oates of Wichita, Kan., and Richard Oates of Center Ridge; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 1 p.m., Wednesday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church by Pastor Johnnie Davis. Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery

Mary Cupit
Mary Ruth Cupit, 73, of Morrilton died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005.
She was born July 26, 1932, in Geridge to Willie Arthur Hughes and Barbara Jane (McGinty) Hughes. She was a member of the Bald Knob Baptist Church of Plumerville and a retired real estate agent.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Cupit; one son, Randy K. Carter of Alexandria, Va., one stepdaughter, Sandra Donnelly of Norwood, Ill.; one sister, Malvern Kennemere of Rowlett, Texas; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home Chapel in Conway.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Ida Belle DeVolder
Ida Belle Scott DeVolder, age 70, of Perryville, Arkansas, died July 30, 2005.
She was born February 11, 1935, in the Cherry Hill community, a daughter of Jess Scott and Daisy Smith Scott. Mrs. DeVolder was a self-employed produce sales person and of the Assembly of God faith.
She is survived by a brother, Dale Scott of Perryville; sister, Iona Blair and husband Wayne of Cherry Hill, brother-in-law, Earl White, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Scott, both of Perryville; thirty-seven nieces and nephews, forty-three great nieces and nephews and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, at Perryville Assembly of God with Bro. Buddy Wroten and Bro. Stanley Wallace officiating. Burial was in Cherry Hill Cemetery
by Harris Funeral Home of Perryville.

Darvin Hurley
Darvin Cloyd Hurley, 66, of Springfield died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005.
He was born April 25, 1939, in Clinton, a son of Cloyd Earl Hurley and Goldie Mary (Gardner) Hurley. He was a service station attendant and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Frankie M. Green Hurley; one son, Micheal Hurley of Conway; one daughter, Tammy Smidt of Blytheville; one brother, Daniel Earl Hurley of Fordyce; two sisters, Opal Stevenson of Graves-ville and Sybil McKenzie of Damascus; and 17 grandchildren.
Graveside service was 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kilgore Cemetery
with the Rev. Larry Meeks officiating. Arrangements were by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Alvin Hardin
Alvin Hardin, 63, of Morrilton, died Sunday, July 31, 2005.
He was born June 4, 1942, in Morrilton, a son of Lois Geneva Brooks and Noah Hardin. He was a general laborer and a member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his stepmother, Mildred Leapheart of Kansas City, Kan.; seven brothers, Dr. Willie Hardin of Little Rock, Herschel Leapheart and Ronald Leapheart, both of Kansas City, Kan., Serschel Leapheart of Calipatria, Calif., Donald Leapheart of Iola, Kan., Morris Leapheart Jr. of Kansas City, Mo., and Eddie Lee Leapheart of Jackson, Miss.; three sisters, Tillie O’Neal-Kyles of Roswell, Ga., Joanna L. Newman of Fayetteville, and Willie Ethel McNeal of Kansas City, Mo.

Robert ‘Doc’ Irwin
Robert E. “Doc” Irwin, 74, of Russellville, died on August 6, 2005, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock.
As a husband and father, he was steadfast and loyal. He drew his greatest satisfaction in life from his family, his friends, practicing law, and fishing.
He was born in Russellville on May 24, 1931, to Dr. Emmett Erastus Irwin and Bessie Catherine Gill Irwin Bowers. He graduated from Russellville High School in 1949 and attended Arkansas Tech University.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served in the
Korean War and was decorated for heroism.
He earned his law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law and was licensed to practice law in 1958.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Mr. M.A. Bowers; his brother, William Edward Irwin; and a granddaughter, Emily Katherine Cozart.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sylvia Ann (Butt) Irwin of Russellville and seven children: John Robert Irwin, and his wife Jan of Morrilton, Martin Edward Irwin and his wife Michelle of Russellville, Catherine Ann Irwin and her partner Jill Duvall of Hillsborough, N.C., Susan Lee Lutz and her husband CW4 George A. Lutz of Enterprise, Ala., Nancy Beth Irwin Cozart and her husband Andy Cozart of Fayetteville, Timothy Seth Irwin and his wife Tatia of Russellville, and Brian Matthew Irwin of Dallas, Texas.
Survivors also include 16 grandchildren: Jason Irwin, Michael Irwin, Jennifer Wilburn, Jacob Lutz, Clay Lutz, Teddie Bullock, Jodie Bullock, Ben Tucker, Josh Tucker, Benjamin Duvall-Irwin, Dylan Duvall-Irwin, Joshua Irwin, Drew Cozart, Jared Cozart, Evan Irwin, and Sophia Elaine Irwin; and three great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be John, Martin, Seth, and Brian Irwin, George Lutz, and Andy Cozart. Honorary pallbearers will be Doc’s 12 grandsons.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mackey Yokem. Burial with military honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Rogers-Rye Post 2283 will be in Pisgah Cemetery
at Pottsville by Shinn Funeral Service.

Roma Kirtley
Roma Lee Gray Kirtley, age 83, of Morrilton, Arkansas, passed away August 5, 2005.
She was born June 26, 1922, in Morrilton, Arkansas, a daughter of Durham Gray and Tennie Craig Gray. Roma was the widow of Loyd S. Kirtley of Birdtown. They lived for 40 years in Downey, California. Mrs. Kirtley retuned to Morrilton to make her home after Loyd’s death in 1988.
Her career was spent as an assistant graphic engineer at North American Aircraft Rockwell International where she worked on NASA projects Gemini and Apollo. She met the seven original astronauts when they visited the plant.
Survivors include one brother, Charles Gray of Morrilton; two sisters, Norma J. Dodson of Morrilton and Erma Demeter of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six nieces, Renae Gray of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Dr. Roma Lisa Gray of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Ann Landers of Dallas, Texas, Joni Hienschied and Donna Sledge, both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Jeannie Bright of Sherwood, Arkansas; one nephew, Jon David Gray of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one cousin, Paul Crumby of Colorado; and uncle, J.C. Craig of Little Rock, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jon and W.C. Gray.
Graveside services were 10 a.m. Monday, August 8, at Elmwood Cemetery
with Bro. Jason Johnston officiating. Arrangements were by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Henry F Mozingo
Henry Frederick Mozingo, born December 9, 1935, in Plumerville, Ark., to Earnest and Emilie Mozingo, went to be with his Lord and Savior August 1, 2005.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Carl, and wife Cris, of Fort Gibson, Okla.; daughter, Cathy Rhodes, and husband John Rhodes of Rogers, Ark.; and daughter-in-law, Tecla Mozingo of Inola, Okla. Grandchildren include Christian Mozingo and Joshua and Sean Rhodes and step-grandchildren, Jourdan, Kasey and Hunter Godwin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, sister, and his son, Steven Mozingo, in 1999.
Other survivors are his brother, Ivy Mozingo, wife Frankie and their children, Gene and Sara, David, and Marsha and Allen Bruce.
To his family, he was the best friend, father and husband that could ever be possible. His love for family was superceded only by his love and devotion for his Lord and Savior. His daily walk was a witness to those around him, that he wanted all to know how wonderful it was to know the Lord.
To his friends, he wanted to always help them with all their needs, whether it was fixing a car or repairing an air conditioner.
Most of all, for his grandchildren, he wanted to teach them to love Jesus, love life, go camping, fishing and snow skiing, and be kind to all those around them.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army for 37 years, both active and reserve, and retired in 1995 as Command Sergeant Major.
He proudly served as a counselor to numerous high school students at the Tulsa Technology Center for 35 years.
He will be missed on this earthly journey but is joined by his son and other family members in heaven and will be there to welcome us all when the time comes.
Visitation was Wednesday, August 3, 2005, 5 to 7 p.m. at Moore’s Southlawn. Services were held at Arrow Heights Baptist Church, 3201 South Elm, Broken Arrow, at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 4, 2005, with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.
