Almarita Mann Underwood
Almarita Mann Underwood, of Oro Valley, Ariz., formerly of Arkansas, died on Dec. 7, 2004, at her residence surrounded by loved ones.
She was born Dec. 7, 1922, the daughter of the late Bristo and Azzie Mann.
Mrs. Underwood taught second and third grades and Title I Reading at Estes Elementary School in the Marana School District for 25 years. The Underwoods moved to Arizona from Arkansas in 1952.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Earl Eugene "Gene" Underwood in 1998; and one brother.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Martha Underwood and Mary and Tim Maher; four grandchildren, Daniel and Laura Maher and Matthew and Mark Underwood; two sisters, Virginia Vaughn and husband, Maurice, of Tilton, Ill., and Vella Olds of Atlanta, Ga.; two dear sisters-in-law, Wanda Spivey of Kerrville, Texas, and Macel Moore of Piggott; 26 nieces and nephews; and a dear and long-time friend, Iva Lee of Marana, Ariz.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Adair Avalon Chapel in Tucson, Ariz., with Adair Funeral Homes of Tucson in charge of the arrangements.

Josie Lee Bare Taylor
Josie Lee Bare Taylor, 94, of Jacksonville, Ark., died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at the Arkansas Hospice Center in North Little Rock.
She was born Sept. 3, 1910, the daughter of the late Jacob and Floria Mae Bare in Piggott.
Mrs. Taylor, a long time resident of Malden, was a member of the First Christian Church for many years. An important part of her life was music and many Malden natives will remember her piano music at the church and other functions in the area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris T. Taylor; two brothers, Robert and Hubbard Bare; and one sister, Mae Gnarro.
She is survived by her son, Morris R. Taylor and wife, Mary Beth, of Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico; a daughter, Rhonda Smith and husband, Jimmie, of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2005, in the Park Cemetery
in Malden.

Mildred Marie Gossett
Mildred Marie Gossett, 91, of Piggott, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, in the National Health Care in Kennett.
She was born June 4, 1913, the daughter of the late Arthur Glen and Hattie Jane Fields Campbell.
She was united in marriage to Millage Baxter Gossett on Aug. 10, 1932. They had eight children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Millage B. Gossett; one son, David Gossett; one daughter, Jane Britt; two great-grandsons, Matthew Laroque and Ricky David St. Pierre; one sister, Betty Sherfield; and three brothers, Sidney Campbell, Clyde Campbell and Otho Campbell.
She is survived by six children, Mona Bare of Piggott, Jerry Gossett of Dexter, Norman Gossett of Hardy, Judy Messer of Barbourville, Ky., Richard Gossett of Rector and Susan Krause of Piggott; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Nellie Gossett of Piggott; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Kevin Murray officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bruce Gossett, David Gossett, Andy Gossett, Richard Krause, Tommy Krause, Michael Gossett, Travis Gossett, Clay Gossett, Tad Brett and Michael Messer.

Dr. C. Fitzhugh Spragins
Dr. C. Fitzhugh Spragins, 69, a longtime leader in education, church and civic affairs in Batesville, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at White River Medical Center in Batesville after a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 4, 1935, in Pine Bluff, the son of John D. Spragins and Mary Fitzhugh Spragins.
Dr. Spragins was a 1957 graduate of Arkansas College, now Lyon College, who eventually became a professor of religion at Lyon and served for 30 years before retirement in 1995. He was then appointed professor emeritus of religion.
After graduating from Lyon, Fitzhugh Spragins earned a master of divinity degree at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia and a Ph.D. at Aberdeen University in Scotland. He also did post-doctoral work at Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-60.
He became one of the college's first endowed professors when he was appointed the Josephine Emily Brown Professor of Religion, the title he held upon retirement.
He was an ordained Presbyterian minister and was actively involved in First Presbyterian Church in Batesville. He served as moderator of the East Arkansas Presbytery in 1993 and was a commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. in 1992.
He was a member of the Independence County Historical Society, Batesville Preservation Association, the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother.
He is survived by his wife, Hope Elder Spragins of Batesville; stepson, Clint Parton of Jonesboro; daughters, Stacey Spragins Rhoades of Hardy and Melissa Spragins Qualls of Batesville; stepdaughter, Kelly Purtee of Jonesboro; brothers, John D. Spragins of South Carolina and Joel F. Spragins of North Carolina; sister, Mary Maxfield Kuykendall of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Laura Purtee, Rachel Purtee, Mallory Parton, Clara Rhoades, Tressie Rhoades, April Ann Qualls, Hanna Qualls and Jill Qualls.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Brown Chapel at Lyon College in Batesville; in addition, graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2005, at Oaklawn Cemetery
in Batesville under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.

Violet Beatrice Beck
Violet Beatrice Beck, 85, of Rector, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005.
She was born March 5, 1920, in Cardwell, Mo., the daughter of the late Neail and Ada Bell Horner Morries.
She was united in marriage to Carl Franklin Beck Sr. on March 5, 1936. They had eight daughters and three sons.
She lived in Nimmons from 1939 until the time of her death. She was a member of Victory Fellowship Church in Piggott.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl F. Beck Sr.; one daughter, Duanita Mauldin; and one son, Wesley Franklin Beck.
She is survived by two sons, Carl Beck Jr. of Rector and Charles Beck of Nimmons; seven daughters, Bonnie Raney of Beebe, Ark., Brenda Hendley of Nimmons, Diane Thomas of Topeka, Kans., Charlene Schleuder of Denver, Colo., Anna Kay Williamson of Wappapello, Mo., Paula Hillis of Wappapello, Mo., and Carlotta Morrison of Paragould; 32 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, James C. Morries of Spencer, Ind., and Jessie R. Morries of Valrico, Fla.; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Bill Newman officiating. Burial followed in the Nimmons Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Chad Beck, Jason Beck, Dallas Lewis, Brian Beck, Jeffery Beck and Roger Beck. Honorary pallbearers were Bret Palmer, Terry Palmer, Donald Foster and J.W. Taylor.

M. Joyce Glass
M. Joyce Glass (nee Collier), 71, of Cedar Hill, Mo., died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Des Peres Hospital in Des Peres, Mo.
She was born June 13, 1933, in Rector, the daughter of William L. and Virgie (nee Stacy) Collier.
She was united in marriage to Olan Glass on April 14, 1949, in Paragould.
Mrs. Glass was a member of Morse Mill Baptist Church and loved reading and collecting music boxes. She was a wonderful homemaker who took very good care of those around her. Her most precious moments were those spent with family, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William L. and Virgie Collier; her husband, Olan Glass; grandson, Ralph Voegtlin; two brothers, Shelby and Morris Collier; and one sister, Jerry Thurman.
She is survived by five children, Jean Glass of Cedar Hill, Mo., Peggy (Clarence) Miller of House Springs, Mo., Gail (Lee) Yates of Cedar Hill, Kenneth Glass of Cedar Hill and David (Alice) Glass of Imperial, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Meegan (John) Zarbock, Heather (Lincoln) Tacony, Robert (Jammie) Lewis, Alison (Teddy) Gray, Steve (fiancee, Becky Bast) Miller, Jesse Glass and Jenny Glass; five great-grandchildren, Matthew Tacony, Robert Lewis Jr., Halen Tacony, Ralph Voegtlin Jr. and Austin Gall; two siblings, Bernice (Alvin) Boyer of Granite City, Ill., and Carolyn Sue Collier of Granite City, Ill.; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2005, at Chapel Hill Mortuary in Cedar Hill, Mo. Burial followed in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Cedar Hill.

Eugia "Rex" Parrish
Eugia "Rex" Parrish, 72, of Piggott, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at his home in Piggott.
He was born March 20, 1932, in Lafe, the son of the late Robert Alvah and Millie Mamie Watson Parrish.
Mr. Parrish was baptized in the Church of Christ in McDougal and he was a retired farmer.
He was united in marriage to Maggie L. Kemper on Nov. 12, 1949. They had four children.
He was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Rex Parrish; and one brother, Hugh Parrish.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie Parrish of Piggott; two daughters, Jeanette Howell and husband, Eddie, of Piggott and Sandy Nelson and husband, Don, of Redfield, Ark.; one son, Gary Parrish and wife, Angie, of Piggott; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie Howell, Priscilla Seal, Kristi Smith, Brad Nelson, Danielle Brodnax, Jeff Nelson, Justin Parrish, Andy Parrish, Derren Parrish and Chasidy Parrish; 11 great-grandchildren, Allison Moffitt, Taylor Seal, Brandon Seal, Christopher Smith, Jayanna Smith, Bentley Brodnax, Kaleb Brodnax, Saige Brodnax, Erin Nelson, Katlyn Parrish and Shaylyn Parrish; one brother, Denzile Parrish of Alma, Ark.; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Charles Richardson officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery
in Pollard. Pallbearers were Brad Nelson, Jeff Nelson, Justin Parrish, Derren Parrish, Andy Parrish and Wayne Smith.

Shirley Garrison
Shirley Garrison, 67, of Piggott died Monday, March 14, 2005, at her home in Piggott.
She was born July 16, 1937, in St. Louis, the daughter of the late Norman Randle and Mae Violet Grote Cox.
She was united in marriage to Paul Garrison on March 8, 1957. They had one son.
Mrs. Garrison was a member of the First Baptist Church in Piggott, where she took care of the nursery for several years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, a member of the Jaycettes and the Little League Auxiliary. She worked for Brown Shoe Company, the Sears store and McMurry Office Supply.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Garrison of Piggott; one son, Gary Garrison and wife, Millicent, of Spring, Texas; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Charles Carrens and Dr. Shannon Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Walter Rau, Carey Rau, Greg Nixon, Aaron Householder, Jeff Howell and Floyd Landrum.

Clifton Carl Shride
Clifton Carl Shride, 90, recently of Piggott, died Monday, March 14, 2005, in Anaheim, Calif.
He was born April 8, 1914, in Clay County, the son of the late David Henry and Zulla Belle White Shride.
He was a member of the Church of God in St. Louis, Portland, Oreg., Bell Gardens, Calif., Madison, Wisc., and Piggott. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was based in Colorado and the Philippines. He worked as a government meat inspector and retired after 30 years of government service.
Shride and his new bride, Leona, taught in a one room school in Patterson, Ark., with Leona teaching kindergarten through fourth grade and Shride teaching fifth through eighth grades. During World War II he learned to be a barber and supplemented their income after the war by working in this profession. He valued education throughout his life and was continually taking classes to improve his professional position. By the end of his government career, he was equivalent to a veterinarian.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Iva Leona Shride; three daughters, Iva Mignon Soto of La Habra, Calif., and her husband, Richard, Glenys Yvonne Arnell of Stockton, Calif., and her husband, Jerry, and Mitzi Belle Manning of Anaheim and her husband, Tom; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and cousins; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. on March 17, 2005, at the Renaker/Kloekgether Mortuary in Buena Park, Calif. Funeral services will be held in Piggott at 10 a.m. on Friday, March, 25, 2005, at the Piggott Church of God. Burial will follow in the Piggott Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home.
