Cyrus Bartow Manasco

Mr. Cyrus Bartow Manasco, affectionately called "Cy", age 84, a resident of De Queen, and former resident of Umpire, died Monday, December 15, 2008 in the National Park Medical Center, Hot Springs, Ark.

He was born to Dale William and Mellie Dalrymple Manasco at Umpire, Arkansas, on May 18, 1924. He was a retired rancher and farmer. He was a Methodist and enjoyed cattle, chickens, and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Lavada Stoker Manasco, and Linnie Bell Griffin Manasco.

He is survived by three step-sons, Charles Griffin, Calvin Griffin, and Roy Dean Griffin all of Horatio, a step-daughter, Linda Boyd of Horatio, a great-aunt, Billie Jean Dalrymple of Umpire, a nephew, Olen Strasner of Umpire, and a number of step-grandchildren, and cousins.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Cy Manasco will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 17, 2008, in the Cedar Hill Cemetery with Rev. Donnie Vaughn officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen, The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 16th.

Nelda Jean Simmons Rodgers

Mrs. Nelda Jean Simmons Rodgers, age 78, a resident of Lockesburg, Arkansas died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at her home.

She was born October 3, 1930 in New Hope, Arkansas to Bethi and Elsie Bissell Kirby. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Joy Freewill Baptist Church .

Mrs. Rodgers was preceded in death by her husbands, Griffin Simmons and Booker Rodgers. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Benny and Melanie Simmons of Provo, Arkansas Gene and Donna Simmons and Gary and De Ann Simmons all of Dierks, Arkansas ; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Rick Cole of Hope, Arkansas ; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Rodgers will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2008 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks with Raymond Dees and Larry Fry officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Joy Cemetery near Daisy.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2008 at the funeral home in Dierks.

Frank Austin Counts

Mr. Frank Austin Counts, age 80, a resident of De Queen, died Friday, December 12, 2008 in the De Queen Medical Center.

He was born to Austin and Mary Meador Counts at Hartley, Arkansas, on July 24, 1928. He was a Veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietname War, having served in the U. S. Army as Master Sergeant for over 20 years. He also worked for the USDA, and was a member of the Lone Oak Baptist Church. He enjoyed music and playing the guitar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Jo Butler and Ila Belle Wise, and a grandson, Jake Parker Tinkes.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Ruth Sutton Fisk Counts of De Queen, one son, Brett Allan Counts of Wickes, Ark.; two daughters, MariLynn Gaston of Wickes and Lynn Tinkes both of Wickes, Ark.; two sisters, Jacqueline Johnston of Blue Ridge, Florida, and Tommi Capps of West Palm Beach, Florida, Seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Frank Counts will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2008 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with military rites will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery at Cove, Arkansas, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, December 14th.

Harold R. Havins
Mr. Harold R. Havins, age 88, a resident of Lockesburg, AR died Saturday, December 13, 2008 in Texarkana, TX.
He was born August 9, 1920 in Haworth, OK to Thomas and Margaret Rino Havins. He was a farmer and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.and a Methodist.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Terry Havins; a son, Terry Lynn Havins; a brother, Floyd Havins; his sisters, Helen Ruth Ebert, Betty Gregg and Marguerite Crowell.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Sue Laws of Salado, TX; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Patsy Havins of Lockesburg; Mozell Nall of Little Rock, AR; four grandchildren, Gregg Laws, Gina Hunter, Lisa Clement, and Christi Jordan; five great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Havins will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2008 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wesley Blankenship and Rev. Michael Jennings officiating. Burial will follow in the Redmen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2008 at the funeral home.

Helen Ruth Smith Bynum

Helen Ruth Smith Bynum, age 76, a resident of Mineral Springs, AR died Saturday, December 13, 2008 in Nashville, AR. She was born October 12, 1932 in Ada, OK to Willis Dewey and Orbra Lee Cantlon Smith. She was a client of the Howard County Children’s Center and was a member of the First Christian Church of De Queen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis Smith and Orbra Harrison; her step-father Reginald Harrison; three brothers, A.F. Smith, Melvin Smith and Eugene Smith; her sister-in-law, Dinky Smith; her brother-in-law, Leroy Sunderman, and a niece, Susan Sunderman Smith. She is survived by a sister, Willie Lee Sunderman of Nashville, AR; three brothers, Marvin (Geraldine) Smith of De Queen, AR, Leo (Beverly) Harrison of Fayetteville, AR, and Kent (Kerry) Harrison of Hot Springs, AR; two sisters-in-law, Dee Ann Smith Elliott and Ernestine Young Smith; eighteen nieces and nephews and extended family and friends from the Baptist Retirement Village in Mineral Springs and the Howard County Children’s Center in Nashville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2008 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in De Queen with Kevin Randolph officiating. Burial will follow in the Redmen Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Monday, December 15, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Howard County Children’s Center, 1577 Hwy 371 West, Nashville, AR 71852 .

Kerry Anderson Sullivan

Mr. Kerry Anderson Sullivan, age 69, a resident of De Queen, died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at his home, after a long illness.

He was born to Jasper M. and Lillie Romine Rogers Sullivan at Wilton, Arkansas, on July 20, 1939. He was 1957 graduate of De Queen High School, and was retired from SWEPCO, where he served as a lineman and troubleman. He served in the military with the U. S. Marines, and was a member of the Geneva Missionary Baptist Church of De Queen. He enjoyed rock collecting, woodworking, and whittling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Arnold “D. D.” Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Tugman Sullivan of De Queen, two daughters and sons-in-law, Carie Elizabeth and Scott Maroon of Murfreesboro, Arkansas, Re Daneen and Jerry Wilson of Katy, Texas, three grandchildren, Abby Maroon, Brody Maroon of Murfreesboro, Ark., and Jared Wilson of Katy, Texas; three brothers, Gene Sullivan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dal Sullivan of Phoenix, Arizona, and Kelsie Sullivan of De Queen, and three sisters, Gwen Baity of South Carolina, Sharon Martin of Okeechobee, Florida, and Iris Ward of Texarkana, Arkansas, a special brother-in-law, Joe Tugman, and a special friend, Sam Hendrix; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Kerry Sullivan will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2008 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Crawford and Rev. Robby Bates officiating. Burial Will follow in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home. The family Will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2008.

The family will be at their residence at 1517 North 9th, De Queen.

Loretha Simpson Whipple Duke

Mrs. Loretha Simpson Whipple Duke, age 93, a resident of Horatio died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at her home.

She was born September 25, 1915 in Jadie, Oklahoma to John Wade and Lousenda Callahan Simpson. She was a homemaker and a member of the State Line Baptist Church.
Mrs. Duke was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Whipple and John Duke; a daughter and son-in-law, Doris and James Halliday.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Billy Willis of De Queen; 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Duke will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2008 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.L. Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Cerro Gordo Cemetery.

Ryan Levi Pierce

Ryan Levi Pierce, infant son of Daisy Shelton of Hatton, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at home.

He was born April 15, 2008 in Mena, Arkansas and is survived by his mother Daisy Shelton of Hatton, Arkansas; Special Dad: Corky Randall of Hatton, Arkansas; 3 brothers: Gavin, Melchiah, Ashton, and Darnay, all of Hatton, Arkansas; two uncles: Wayne Shelton and Waylon Shelton, both of Hatton, Arkansas; his Grandparents: Robert and Noreen Pierce of Hatton, Arkansas; his Great-grandmothers: Marie Powell of Wickes, Arkansas and Joann Shelton of Vandervoort, Arkansas; Great-grandfather: Willie Pierce of Brooksmith, Texas.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Vandervoort First Baptist Church with Brother Paul Stuart officiating. Interment follows at Witherspoon Cemetery under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Shelton and Waylon Shelton.

Belle Lorene Godwin Thomas

Mrs. Belle Lorene Godwin Thomas, age 92, a resident of De Queen, AR died Sunday, December 7, 2008 in the Christus St. Michael Health Care in Texarkana, Texas. She was born June 15, 1916 in De Queen to Joe and Mary Jeffcoat Godwin. She was a homemaker, office manager in the family business and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in De Queen.
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Reed Thomas on October 17, 2007; and 10 brothers and sisters. She is survived by one son, Gerald E. Thomas of Texarkana, Arkansas; two daughters, Carolyn Stovall of Woodbridge, Virginia and Sandra Dunn of De Queen; six grandchildren, Jason Thomas, Gae Campbell, Dwana Hooper, Michael Stovall, Kala Dunn and Rose Ann Dunn, and 13 great-grandchildren; her caregivers, Sandy Davis and Billie Clark, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Thomas will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2008 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Ida Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the funeral home.

Violet Young
Violet Young, 90, of Foreman, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2008 in the Little River Memorial Hospital. She was born November 2, 1918 in Foreman. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her parents, Jobe and Nora Green, her husband, Rufus Young; one sister, Nancy Broomfield; one brother, Joy Green. She is survived by one brother, Carl Green of Foreman; two daughters, Judy Sparks of Foreman and Patsy Taylor of Zion, Illinois; one son Keith Young of Corinth, Mississippi; three granddaughters, Jennifer Ingalls, Michelle Johnson and Jessica Ross; three great-grandchildren, several loved nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the Southern Baptist Church of Crossroads with Rev. Gary Steiner officiating.

John Lee Platt

Mr. John Lee Platt, Sr., age 69, a resident of Horatio, died Monday, December 08, 2008, in the Christus St. Michael Hospital.
He was born to Holly and Della Mae Harding Platt at Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 10, 1939. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U. S. Air Force, and was a tool and die maker and concrete finisher.

He is survived by his wife, Shelia Donaldson Platt of Horatio, two sons and daughter-in-law, John, Jr. and Julie Platt of Horatio, and James Douglas Platt of De Queen, two step-sons, Kenneth and his wife, Danielle Gillespie of Wisconsin, Gary and his wife, Jackie Gillespie of Houston, Texas, one step-daughter, Tina and her husband, Kra McCune of Little Elm, Texas, one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and F. L. Harvey of Little Elm, Texas, fifteen grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews, and a special cousin, James Fred Harding of Hominy, Okla.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation was under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Shirley Ann Voss Burnett

Mrs. Shirley Ann Voss Burnett, a resident of Texarkana, Texas, died Saturday, December 6, 2008 in Texarkana.

She was born to Winford Woodrow and Bettie Jo Lusk Eastridge at Mesa, Arizona on February 27, 1948. She was a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Larry Eastridge, a daughter, Sandra Ann Taylor, and her grandchildren, Derick Taylor and Lindsay Collins.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Steve James and Lisa Renee Voss of Winthrop, Ark.; A daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Ruth and Phillip Pruitt of Texarkana, Ark.; two brothers, Dickie Eastridge and Russell Tallant both of Russellville, Ark.; a sister, Melva Ward of Cove, Arkansas, seven grandchildren, Camille Taylor, Koby Voss, Kory Voss, Luke Voss, Steven Pruitt, and Kristen Pruitt, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mrs. Shirley Burnett will be on Monday, December 8, 2008 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel from 10:00 until 1:00 p.m. Cremation will follow, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.
