Katherine H. Hildreth, 66, of Montevallo died Jan. 16, 2004. She was born in Montevallo to Welton Grady Hicks and Mary Alice Hicks. She graduated from the University of Montevallo with a degree in music. She worked as an organist and choir director in churches in Alabama, Florida, Virginia and Ohio. She was married in 1996 and moved to Montevallo in 2003 after her retirement. She was skilled in computers, the Internet and produced award-winning newsletters.

She is survived by her husband, Charles D. Hildreth; her son, David Baxter of Cincinnati, Ohio; and her step-son, James Hildreth of Columbus, Ohio.

Service will be Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. at University Baptist Church, the Rev. Robin Norworthy presiding. Burial will follow in Montevallo Cemetery, Charter Funeral Home directing.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the church.

Billy Ray "Bill" Johnson

Ric Trucking owner

Billy Ray "Bill" Johnson, 56, of Montevallo died Jan. 17, 2004, in Calera. He was the owner of Ric Trucking.

He is survived by his daughter, Angela Johnson of Mobile; his mother, Ludie Johnson Allums of Calera; one sister, Mary Ruth Furline of Calera; and one brother, Kenneth Johnson of Florida.

Service was Jan. 19 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel, Henri Wheat and John Mooney presiding. Burial followed in Shelby Memory Gardens in Calera, Rockco's directing.

Flim L. Martin Jr.

Grandfather of six

Flim L. Martin Jr., 77, of Montevallo died Jan. 13, 2004, in Montevallo. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Marie Schrader.

He is survived by his wife, Ruthie Isbell Martin of Montevallo; one daughter, Cathy Sanders of Shelbyville, Tenn.; one son, Larry (Elizabeth) Martin of Montevallo; two brothers, Buster Martin of Shelby and John Martin of Vincent; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 15 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, the Rev. David Isbell presiding. Burial followed in Moore's Cemetery, Rockco's directing.

Johnnie Ruth Parker

Westover resident

Johnnie Ruth Parker, 70, of Westover died Jan. 17, 2004, at her home. She was born Dec. 25, 1933, in Wilsonville.

She is survived by her children, David M. (Colleen) Mooney of Alabaster and Candi J. (Anthony) Mitchem of Westover; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 19 at Old Chapel United Methodist Church, the Rev. Jerry Baker presiding. Burial followed in the church cemetery, Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

Donald Gene Rains

Grandfather of three

Donald Gene Rains, 61, of Jemison, formerly of Indianapolis, Ind., died Jan. 13, 2004. He was born in Indiana on May 8, 1942, to Alvin C. Rains and Anna Martha Scales. He worked as a brick mason on numerous construction projects.

He was an identical twin to the late Ronald Rains and the brother of the late Edward Scales.

He is survived by three children, Lisa Saldana of Jemison, Martha (James) Burnett of Clanton and Jeffrey Rains of Clanton; his former wife, June Mims Rains; his grandchildren, Joshua Saldana, David Rains and Jesse Burnett; his brothers, William Rains, Robert Rains and Alvin Rains Jr.; his sisters, Rose Stephens, Starlet Trent and Sue Anna Roody, all of Indianapolis, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

Service was private at Charter Funeral Home in Calera.

Alice Todd

Alice Todd, 64, of Calera died Jan. 16, 2004.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Kermit Todd; her son, Kelvin (Jeanne) Todd; three daughters, Gwendolyn (Michael) Garrett, Penelope Todd and Cynthia (Joseph) Medley; six grandchildren; and other relatives.

Service was Jan. 22 at the Good Shepherd Chapel in Montevallo with burial following in the First Baptist cemetery in Calera, Good Shepherd directing.

Clarence Lee Vernon

Member of Faith Baptist Church

Clarence Lee Vernon, 76, of Decatur, Ill., died Jan. 12, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Centreville, Ala., to Jessie and Essie Smitherman Vernon. He retired from Sol Tick as a crane operator in 1994. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, having served as trustee and deacon. He was a former licensed pilot, having enjoyed flying the Cessna aircraft. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Analda Eloise Frederick in 1950; and his sister, Bobbie Sue Blankenship.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Shirley Vernon of Decatur, Ill.; his children, Jan (Ed) Swope of Decatur, Ill., Michael (Shelley) of Mount Zion, Ill., and Ronda Barnett of Decatur, Ill.; stepchildren, Pam (Robert) Marshall of Atlanta, Ga., Patty (Paul) Martin of Decatur, Ill., Penny (Mark) Weaver of Decatur, Ill., Doug (Norma) Davidson of Decatur, Ill., and Susan York of O'Fallon, Mo.; brothers and sisters, Luther (Minnie) Vernon of Alabaster, Margaret Joan Allen of Pana, Ill., John Richard (Judy) Vernon of Pana, Ill., Albert Vernon of Alabaster and Shirley (James) Cordes of Clanton; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Service was Jan. 17 at Rockco's Funeral Home in Montevallo. Burial was at Ashby Church Cemetery in Ashby, Ala.

Edna Weldon Atchison

Grandmother of 18

Edna Weldon Atchison, 98, of Calera died March 18, 2004. She was born Jan. 29, 1906, in Mostellar, Ala.

She is survived by her children, Ruth Finley of Center Point and Jeff D. Atchison of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Jeffrey Atchison of Jacksonville, Fla., Ginger Phipps and Butch Finley, both of Center Point; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mrs. J.J. Cauthen and Myrtle Mitchell; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service was March 19 at Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home, the Rev. Roger Hamaker presiding. Burial followed in Shelby Memory Gardens, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

Theodore Frederick Davis

Theodore Frederick Davis, 64, of Chelsea died March 22, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born July 27, 1939, in Jefferson County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Davis. He was a member of Cahaba Heights Lodge No. 887 and a member of Lester's Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his children, Tami Seritt of Chelsea and Kelly Davis off Homewood; granddaughter, Amber Seritt of Chelsea; one brother, Evans Davis of Dallas, Ga.; three sisters, Peggy Bailey of Birmingham, Sharon Goodson of Chelsea and Julia Taylor of Pinson.

Service was March 24 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. Marvin McCormick presiding. The family requests memorials be made to St. Vincent's Oncology Unit or the Bruno's Cancer Center.

Bess Mae Deffenbaugh

Bess Mae Deffenbaugh, 87, of Montevallo died March 14, 2004, in Alabaster.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty (Johnny E.) Martin of Montevallo; five grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.

Service was at Henderson-Ketterer Funeral Home in Johnstown, Pa., with burial in Richland Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.
