Christine Ledbetter, 88, of Shelby died May 18, 2003, at a local hospital. She was born in 1915 in Tallassee.
She is survived by a daughter, Jayne (Jack) Young of Shelby; grandsons, Mathew (Sherri) Mason of Alabaster and Brad (Kim) Young of Shelby; her sister, Willa Durden of Tallassee; her brother, Aubrey Durden of Tallassee; her great-grandchildren, Gage Scruggs, Garet Mason and Genna Mason, all of Alabaster, and Tyler Young of Shelby; and her stepchildren, Glen (Delaine) Ledbetter of Tallassee, Warren (Antoinette) of Kenner, La., and Shirley Separ of Springfield, Va.
Service was May 21 at Bolton Brown Service Chapel, the Rev. Johnye Horton presiding. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tallassee, Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

Mother of six
Evelyn New Simmons, 72, of Orrville died May 24, 2003 at a local hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence Brady Simmons of Orrville; two sons, Wayne Simmons of Selma and Phillip Simmons of Calera; four daughters, Joyce Craft of Calera, Nancy Campbell of Jemison and Anita Martin and Deborah Averette, both of Columbiana; one brother, Alvis New of Michigan; and three sisters, Gladys Tumblin of Necture, Odel Elrod of Cleveland and Lucille Nickerson of California.
Service was May 26 at Lawrence Funeral Home Chapel in Selma, the Rev. L. R. Rasmussen presiding. Burial followed in the Bethlehem Methodist Church cemetery in the Heiberger community in North Perry County, Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Infant Desiree Leighann Smith died May 24, 2003, at a local hospital.
She is survived by her parents, David Smith and Rachel Joiner; her grandparents, Glenn and Sandy Smith and Deborah and Michael Culpepper, all of Shelby, and Jason Joiner of Columbiana; her great-grandparents, Marie Turner, Barbara and Ronnie Whitehead, all of Columbiana; her great-great-grandmother, Pauline Pennington of Columbiana; her uncle, Steve Smith; her aunts, Stephanie Joiner and Danielle Culpepper, all of Shelby; her great-aunt and great-uncle, Leo and Sue Tidwell of Marietta, Ga.; and her great-great-great-aunt, Doris Allen of Columbiana.
Graveside service was May 27 at New Shelby Cemetery, the Rev. Roland Foster presiding and Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.
JAMES ROBERT THOMAS
Columbiana resident
James Robert Thomas, 65, of Columbiana died May 20, 2003. He was born in January 1938 in Alabama, the son of Jeff and Ella Thomas. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Following his military service, he went into sales. He was currently enjoying his semi-retirement as a distributor for the Birmingham News.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Cox Thomas; his daughters, Kelly Thomas of Tuscaloosa, Diane (Jeff) Whitfield of Columbiana and Angela (Doyce) Horton of Columbiana; five grandchildren, Jeremy Latham, Amber Thomas, Caitlin Whitfield, Kayla and Bradley Horton; and uncle, Jack (Ann) Thomas of Texas.
Service was May 22 at Charter Funeral Home, Pastor Sam Harton and longtime friend, Pastor Hal Taylor, presiding. Burial followed in Dargin Cemetery, Charter Funeral Home directing.
JOE B. BRANTLEY
Retired coal miner
Joe B. Brantley, 64, of Pea Ridge died July 31, 2003, in Alabaster. He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Jim Walter Mines No. 5 in Brookwood.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Brantley of Pea Ridge; three sons, Donald (Brenda) Brantley and Charles (Kay) Brantley, both of Pea Ridge, and Richard (Erin) Brantley of McCalla; one sister, Patsy (Earl) McCartney of Jemison; and five grandchildren, Crystal, Stephanie, Lauren, Amelia and J.J.
Service was Aug. 3 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel, Earl Sims and Kevin Brasher presiding. Burial followed in Macedonia Cemetery in Pea Ridge, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.
SARAH NEAL STINSON CRABTREE
Great-grandmother of seven
Sarah Neal Stinson Crabtree, 80, died July 28, 2003, at Skyline Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.M. Crabtree Jr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Neal Stinson; her son, Billy Crabtree; and her granddaughter, Jessica Ann Busby.
She is survived by her daughter, Leanne (Mike) Busby of Goodlettsville; one son, David (Dot) Crabtree of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Pam (James) Hodge of Gallatin, Tenn., Tim (Cathy) Busby of Beaumont, Texas, Jeff Crabtree of Las Vegas, Nev., Sally Gibbs of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Starling Crabtree and Hayden Crabtree, both of Nashville, Tenn.; and seven great-grandchildren, Taylor, Maureen and Madeline Busby, Trent and Cole Hodge and Mason and Campbell Gibbs.
Service was July 31 at the First Baptist Church of Goodlettsville, the Rev. Jerry Heflin and Dr. Prentis McGoldrick presiding. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Cole & Garrett Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Paul Phillips, Jim Thomas, Jeff Jeffrey, Bill Clendenin, J.C. Tony E. Dismukes, 40, of Shelby died July 30, 2003, at his home. He was born in November 1962 in Sylacauga.
He is survived by his sisters, Mildred Dismukes of Shelby and Myrtle Dismukes of Harpersville; his brother, Jimmy Dismukes of Columbiana; uncles, J.W. Green of Shelby and Sid Green of North Carolina; and aunt, Tommie Field of Harpersville.
Graveside service was Aug. 2 at Beaver Creek Cemetery, the Rev. Don Brown presiding and Bolton Brown Service directing.
CHEREL H. GATTO
Catholic church member
Cherel H. Gatto, 56, died July 29, 2003, after a struggle with cancer. She was an active member of the St. Monica Catholic Church in Duluth, Ga. She worked for Conseco Finance in Birmingham and Duluth, Ga., for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wade Hampton and Cherel Elaine Howard, and her daughter, Elaine Gatto, all of Birmingham.
She is surivived by her son, Victor Gatto of Long Beach, Miss.; her sisters, Glenn (Terry) Coshatt of Woodstock, Ga., and Alice (Dennis) Kutach of Tyler, Texas; her neices, Misty Bowman and Tiffany Monaghan; a nephew, Buddy Feltes; and numerous other family members.
Service was Aug. 2 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham.

Pamela Louise Gentry, 44, of Montevallo died July 29, 2003, in Birmingham.
She is survived by her daughter, Tabitha Renee Falks of Montevallo; her mother, Evelyn L. McDowell of Montevallo; her father Lt. Col. (Ret.) Roma J. McDowell of Montevallo; and a host of other relatives.
Service was Aug. 1 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel.
JASON CRAIG GRAVES
Thompson High School senior
Jason Craig Graves, 17, of Montevallo died July 28, 2003. He attended Kingwood Assembly of God Church and was a senior at Thompson High School, where he had numerous friends and loved his teachers. He also attended the Shelby County School of Technology. He loved fishing, golf and spending time with his family and at church.
He is survived by his parents, LaVonne Graves and Rick Graves of Montevallo; his brother, Jordan Graves of Montevallo; his grandparents, Coy Graves and Mary Graves of Pinson; and a host of aunts, uncles and friends.
Service was July 31 at Southern Heritage Chapel with burial following in Edgewood Cemetery in Locust Fork, Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing.
