ARTHUR CARL "BUD" SVENSSON

Retired from Avondale Mills

Arthur Carl "Bud" Svensson, 81, died Feb. 25, 2003. He was a native of Long Island, N.Y., where he attended City College of New York and St. John's University. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was employed by Avondale Mills in its New York office in 1939 and moved to Birmingham in 1954. He became merchandising vice president in 1956 and retired in 1985. He was a charter member of St. Stephens Presbyterian Church in Mountain Brook and served as an elder during its first session. He worked on the merger of St. Stephens with the Sixth Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was also a longtime member and served on the Board of Governors and as president of Vestavia Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Svensson; his son, Dr. Charles H. (Debra) Svensson; three grandchildren, Karen, Ellan and Thomas; one sister, Evenly Zick; and many nephews and nieces and their children.

Service was Feb. 28 at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Carey Speaker presiding. Burial followed in the Southern Heritage Mausoleum, Ridout's Southern Heritage directing.

TOLBERT WHITFIELD

Alabaster resident

Tolbert Whitfield, 74, of Alabaster died Feb. 25, 2003, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Shelby County in 1929, one of 12 children of Jesse Collins Whitfield and Jessie Glazener Whitfield. He served in the United States Navy and was employed with Nelson Brantley. He was married in 1950 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alabaster.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Ann May.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Whitfield; two sons, Michael L. "Vicki" Whitfield and Timothy "Annie" Whitfield, all of Alabaster; eight grandchildren, Annie Bullock, Chris Whitfield, Shannon Whitfield, Misty Hunley, Summer Whitfield, Korie Whitfield, Julie May and Shelly Ryan; seven great-grandchildren, Ashli Whitfield, Michael Whitfield, Hunter Bullock, Will Bullock, Katie Whitfield, Taylor Ryan and Payton Ryan; brother, J.W. "Dub" (Fay) Whitfield of Columbiana; Virginia "Gin" Floyd of Hueytown; and other family and friends.

Service was Feb. 28 at Charter Funeral Home, Brother Bruce Smart presiding. Burial was in Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Hoover, Charter Funeral Home directing.

WILLIAM CAREY WOMACK SR.

Photographer

William Carey Womack Sr., 65, died Feb. 27, 2003. He worked as a photographer for the Nashville Banner for 15 years, with the United Press International in Jackson, Miss., and the South Eastern Region as a state photo editor for 25 years. He and his wife opened the Waxahatchee Restaurant and Marina, which they owned and operated for 13 years.

He was the son of the late Dr. Ray Womack and Billye Page Womack.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Heider Womack; his children, Sean (Sara) Womack, Robin W. Sutherland, Denise W. (Richard) McCord, William Carey (Laura) Womack Jr. and Caren W. Zysk; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Service was March 1 at Charter Funeral Home. The family asks that memorial donations be sent to the UAB Comprehensive Stroke Center, RWUH M226, 619 19th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35249.

TERRY WAYNE ANDREWS

Birmingham resident

Terry Wayne Andrews, 37, of Birmingham died Dec. 2, 2002. He was born May 8, 1965, in Columbiana.

He is survived by his daughter, Tiffany Andrews; son, Christopher Andrews; mother and stepfather, Barbara and Darrell Lemelle of Birmingham; and brothers, Ronald Andrews of Birmingham and Thomas Cordova of Foley.

Service was Dec. 5 at Old Chapel Cemetery, the Rev. Carroll Spain presiding and Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

DAVID HATCHER BAILEY

World War II veteran

David Hatcher Bailey, 82, of Maylene died Dec. 14, 2002. He was born in 1920 to Ollie Bailey and Mary Clay Hatcher Bailey. He was a World War II veteran and was retired from the city of Pelham.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Peggy Bailey; children, Becky (Jimmy) Lawley of Jemison, Diane (Tim) Mathews of Pelham, Beverly (Thomas) Phillips of Alabaster, Dixie (Jerry) Bice of Montevallo; Anita (Marlin) Sitton of Remlap, Kim Bailey of Maylene, David (Racheal) Bailey Jr. of Maylene, Jill Busby of Birmingham and Jack (Linda) Bailey of California; sisters, Sally Spain of Shannon and Margaret Sule of New Orleans, La.; 14 grandchildren; Chris Lawley, Jennifer Harris, Kyle Mathews, Angel Holstein, Megan Phillips, Jeremy Bice, Kendall Bice, Jonathan Sitton, Beth Sitton, Kriston Bailey, Chad Bailey, Taylor Bailey, David Busby and Scott Broome; four great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

Service was Dec. 16 at Charter Funeral Home, the Rev. Bruce Smart and the Rev. Ray Smith presiding. Burial followed in Patton Chapel Cemetery in Hoover.

JOHN CONNER II

Brent resident

John Conner II, 57, of Brent died Dec. 8, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie Pearl Conner, and other relatives.

Service was Dec. 14 at Evangelist Temple Holiness Church with burial following in Hopewell Cemetery, The Good Shepherd Funeral Home in Montevallo directing.

RHONDA T. DUVALL

Calera resident

Rhonda T. Duvall, 49, of Calera died Dec. 11, 2002, at her residence.

She is survived by her brother, Virgil James Taylor of Louisiana; her grandmother, Bessie Hall of Childersburg; and a host of aunts and uncles.

Service was Dec. 17 at Living By Faith Pentecostal Church in Montevallo, Rick McClain presiding and Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg Chapel directing.

JIMMY GREENE SR.

Columbiana resident

Jimmy Greene Sr., 55, of Columbiana died Dec. 10, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Greene; one daughter, Fallon Greene; one son, Jimmy Greene Jr.; and other relatives.

Service was at Macedonia Baptist Church on Dec. 14 with burial in Wilsonville City Cemetery, The Good Shepherd Funeral Home directing.

WILLIAM CHARLES LLOYD

Columbiana United Methodist Church member

William Charles Lloyd, 78, of Calera died Dec. 11, 2002. He was a member of Columbiana United Methodist Church. He was a Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Reid Lloyd of Calera; four sons, Dennis (Carol) Reid of Birmingham, John Reid of Montevallo, Eddie (Bonnie) Lloyd of Missouri and Ronnie Lloyd of Prattville; and one grandson, Lee Lloyd of South Carolina.

Service was Dec. 14 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home with burial in the mausoleum. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Columbiana United Methodist Church's building fund.

EUGENE MCCRAY

Montevallo resident

Eugene McCray, 92, of Montevallo died Dec. 6, 2002.

He is survived by four sons, Robert Olden, Arthur McCray, Milton McCray and Cornelius McCray; two daughters, Tennie Holmes and Theda Hall; 17 grandchildren; and other relatives.

Service was Dec. 14 at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church with burial following in Montevallo Cemetery, The Good Shepherd Funeral Home directing.
