Lawrence Dewayne Collins, 22, of West Blocton died Oct. 19, 2002.

He is survived by his father, Lawrence Collins Sr.; his mother, Cindy Collins; one brother, Quinton Collins; and other relatives.

Service was Oct. 26 at Union Baptist Church, The Good Shepherd Funeral Home in Montevallo directing.

NELSON DUKES

Lifelong resident of Shelby County

Nelson Dukes, 49, of Montevallo died Oct. 23, 2002. He was a lifelong resident of Shelby County, was employed by Bethea Power Products Company and was a member of the Green Chapel Baptist Church in Montevallo.

He is survived by his wife, Jesstina Grant Dukes; sons, Eric Jamel Shamberger and Phillip Dukes; his mother, Ruby Dukes; brothers and sisters, Bennie (Dorothy) Dukes, Willie Dukes, Clarence (Marcella) Dukes, John Dukes, Jackie Dukes, Larry (Phyllis) Dukes, Evelyn Scott, Ruby Shaw and Lottie Pope; and seven grandchildren.

Service will be Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. at the church, Pastor Billy Craig presiding. Burial will follow in Montevallo Cemetery, Westside Funeral Home in Calera directing.

MAJ. (RET.) JAMES HUNTER GARTH JR.

Veteran

Maj. James Hunter Garth Jr., 83, of Hoover died Oct. 27, 2002. He was retired from the United States Army, having served in the Marine Corps, the Army Air Corps and the Army. He served during World War II, the Korean War and in various countries around the world.

While stationed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, he served as a military police officer and helped to map out the original security plan. He received the Bronze Star, a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, a Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and an Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Following his retirement, he had lived in Florence, Huntsville, Selma and Navarre, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.H. Garth and Myrtle Rose Miller Garth; and his grandson, Shawn Fulghun.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lorena Garth; their children, Leona Fulghun, Jim Garth and Margaret Johnson; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Service was Oct. 29 at the First Christian Church in north Shelby County, Charter Funeral Home directing.

ANDERSON EARL HAMRICK

Grandfather of 30

Anderson Earl Hamrick, 80, of Maylene died Oct. 23, 2002.

He is preceded in death by one son, Sammy Hamrick, and wife, Lillie Mae Hamrick.

He is survived by three daughters, Diane Price of Maylene, Nancy Hamrick of Marvel and Debbie Cruz of Perry, Fla.; three sons, Earl Hamrick Jr. of Montevallo, Mickey Hamrick of Calera and Richard Hamrick of Maylene; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was Oct. 25 at Dargin Cemetery in Calera, Rockco's Funeral Home in Montevallo directing.

PATRICIA ANN LUTZ

Calera resident

Patricia Ann Lutz, 56, of Calera died Oct. 23, 2002, in Birmingham.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Lutz of Calera; two daughters, Sarah Frances Lutz of Calera and Tracy Lutz of Montevallo; four sons, Richard Lutz of Montevallo, John Lutz of Kentucky, Ronald Lutz of Jemison and Dustin Wayne Lutz of Calera; four sisters, Joyce Holsomback of Montevallo, Dean Jarvis of Montevallo, Geraldine Pendleton of Jemison and Sandra Holsomback of Montevallo; two brothers, Jimmy Don Lawley of Montevallo and William Lawley of Florida; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Service was Oct. 26 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Macedonia Cemetery in Pea Ridge, Rockco's Funeral Home in Montevallo directing.

ETHEL BELL DUKES MANN

Lifelong resident of Shelby County

Ethel Bell Dukes Mann, 60, of Columbiana died Oct. 20, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of Shelby County and a member of the Epsibeth Baptist Church of Montevallo, where she served on the Usher Board.

She is survived by her mother, Ruby Mae Dukes; her children, Sharon (David) Johnson, Stephanie (William) Watte and Alecia (the Rev. A.C.) Richardson; brothers and sisters, Bennie (Dorothy) Dukes, Willie Dukes, Clarence (Marcella) Dukes, John Dukes, Jackie Dukes, Larry (Phyllis) Dukes, Evelyn Scott, Ruby Shaw and Lottie Shaw; and 12 grandchildren.

Service was 2 p.m. at the Epsibeth Baptist Church in Montevallo, pastor Lorenzo Mitchell presiding. Burial followed in Montevallo Cemetery, Westside Funeral Home in Calera directing.

HASKEL E. MELHORN

World War II veteran

Haskel E. Melhorn, 84, of Forestdale died Oct. 27, 2002. He was a World War II veteran and had retired as a federal coal mine inspector.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Melhorn of Forestdale; one daughter, Phyllis (Charles) Henderson of Hoover; two grandchildren, Amy Henderson (Mark) Dransfield of Homewood and Matthew C. (Amy) Henderson of Savannah, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Sam and Jake Dransfield; three brothers, Charles Melhorn of Coalfield, Tenn., Ralph Melhorn and Otto Melhorn, both of Wartburg, Tenn.; and one sister, Elnora Lawson of Wartburg, Tenn.

Service was Oct. 30 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Dr. Hugh Richardson presiding and Southern Heritage directing.

TIMOTHY LEON "PO" MORRIS

Nascar fan

Timothy Leon "Po" Morris, 32, of Clanton died.

He was a graduate of Lyman Ward Military Academy, where he received the Presidential Citation for Excellence. He was the captain of the football team during his senior year at Shelby Academy, where he suffered a serious handicapping injury during a game. He attended the University of Montevallo where he studied art, and often visited Lakeshore Rehabilitation Center to encourage patients with injuries similar to his.

He was a Nascar enthusiast and attended numerous races with garage and pit passes. He was even a friend of Adam Petty and was invited to participated in the Victory Junction Gang Camp for critically ill children in Randleman, N.C., established in Petty's memory by Kyle and Patti Petty.

He is survived by his mother, Susan (Bill) Pearson of Lake Helen, Fla.; his father, Mike Morris of Birmingham; his maternal grandmother, Frieda Kelly of Columbiana; paternal grandparents, T.O. and Mary Morris of Bessemer; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Service was Oct. 26, 2002, at Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home, the Rev. Earl Gordon presiding. Burial followed at Pinelawn Gardens, Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the camp, attn: Mary Barr, 311 Branson Mill Road, Randleman, S.C. 27317.

LOLA M. OZLEY

Formerly of Columbiana

Lola M. Ozley, 91, of Rockford died Oct. 19, 2002, at River Bluff Nursing Home. She was born in 1911 in Columbiana, the daughter of Henry and Addie (Moore) Davis. She married William Bruce Ozley, who preceded her in death, in 1931 in Columbiana. She was employed by Amerock for 17 years before she retired, and she was a member of the First Assembly of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984; her parents; one son, Earl Ozley; one grandson, Steven Ozley; four sisters; and one brother.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Flute of Sorrento, Fla., and Shirley Compton of Los Angeles, Calif.; one son, James Ozley of Cherokee, Ark.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was Oct. 23 at Delehanty Funereral Home in Loves Park, the Rev. Jack Cave presiding. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
