COLSON, Mr. John Davis, III "Jack" 67, a resident of Prattville, peacefully slipped away into the Lord's arms on Saturday evening, March 21, 2009, at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was a member of Boone's Chapel Baptist Church and truly loved his church family. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, John Davis Colson, Jr. and Mary Hudspeth Colson, father-in-law, Bolling "Buddy" Tanner, and brother-in-law, Robert "Johnny" Tanner. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 42 years, Linda Tanner Colson; his daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Dennis James; grandson, Jesse Charles James all of Prattville; sister, Elaine Colson (Keith) Starr of Ellenwood, GA; brother, Robert E. Jack was born April 9, 1941, in Columbus, GA, and grew up in Warner Robins. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1966. He came to Alabama in 1967 and from that point on Prattville was his home which he dearly loved for over 41 years. He was a very proud member of the Montgomery Fire Department for 13 years where he attained the position of District Chief in charge of the Fire Medic Division. In 1975, as a lieutenant in the Medics, with the help of his fellow medics & friends, Paul Harper & James Earl Ray, he started the Paramedic Program at the old St. Margaret's Hospital. From there he moved the program to Trenholm State Technical College where the program is still on-going. In 1982 he decided that he should be in business for himself and that was definitely his calling as he thoroughly enjoyed a variety of ventures & partnerships for many years. He was a member of the Prattville Planning Commission until he became ill in June of 2008. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Prattville Memorial with Reverends Rodney Culpepper, Algie Morgan & Randy Tanner officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, March 23rd from 5:00 p.m. tol 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be his nephews & great nephews, Jeff Tanner, Robert Tanner, Michael Collins, Chris Starr, Keith Cantrell, Ryan Cantrell, & Corey Cantrell. WOOD, Smythe Jeffrey
WOOD, Smythe Jeffrey, Colonel (retired), US Army, Infantry, of Millbrook, AL died on March 20, 2009. "Woodie" was born July 1, 1938 in Charlottesville, VA and grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. He graduated from Norview High School in Virginia Beach in 1956, where he played on the state championship football team. He was graduated from The University of Virginia in 1960 with a BS degree in Biology and Latin. He was a member of the UVA football team and "V" Club. He received his Master of Education degree in 1974 and EdD in 1978 from The University of Virginia. He joined the Army in 1955 as a private in the Army reserves while in high school. He was commissioned through the ROTC program at the Univ. of Virginia in 1960. He taught school at Rockhill Academy in Charlottesville, VA until his first tour of duty in Korea in the 7th Inf. Div. in 1962. While in Korea he also played on the 7th Infantry Division (Bayonet) championship football team that won the first Coconut Bowl in Hawaii over the 25th Inf. Div. After completion of company command and brigade staff assignments at Ft. Dix, NJ, he spent a year in Vietnam (1966-67). He taught in the Ranger Dept., Patrolling Committee at Ft. Benning in 1967 and attended the Infantry Officer Advance Course at Ft. Benning, GA. in 1968. Nov. 1968 he returned to Vietnam as G3 Air for Strategic bombing (B-52 Coordinator) for II Field Force. He was with the 1st Battalion 10th Inf., 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Ft. Carson, Colo. Dec. 1969-1971. He taught in the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Dept. (formerly the Office of Military Leadership) at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York 1974-1978. He returned to Korea as the executive officer for the mechanized brigade in the 2nd Infantry Division (1978-79). At Ft. Hood, TX in 1979, he was XO of the 1st (Iron horse) Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. He commanded the 2nd Battalion,7th Calvary "Garry Owen" (Infantry) in the 1st Calvary Division at Ft. Hood, TX 1981-83 and was the Inspector General for the 1st Cav. Div. in 1983. He commanded the 2nd "St. Lo" Brigade of the 2nd Armored Division, at Ft. Hood, Texas 1984-86. He was deputy assistant commandant of the Infantry School at Ft. Benning, GA. when he retired in 1987. His military education included the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Airborne and Ranger Schools, Special Warfare School, Infantry Officer Advance Course (1968), Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas(1972) and Naval War College in Newport, RI (1984). Among the decorations he earned were the Parachutist Badge (Airborne), Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Service Star, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Overseas Service Ribbon (3) and Army Achievement Medal. He was the son of the late Frederick V. and Elizabeth H. Wood of Virginia Beach, VA. He is survived by wife Carolyn Walker Wood of Prattville, AL, sons Smythe J. Wood, Jr. of AL, Martin H. of McDonough, GA, Mark J. Hawkins of Chesapeake, VA; two brothers, Joseph B. of Chesapeake, VA, and Fred V. Wood, Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO; one aunt, Ruth Russell of Chesapeake, VA. One brother, Alan C. Wood of Chesapeake, VA preceded him in death. He is survived by cousins Clifford B. Mahanes, David L. Mahanes and Jean Pace of Charlottesville, VA; Lorraine Shores and Wanda Dorrier of Scottsville, VA, Richard M. Detamore of Stanardsville, VA; Deborah L. Lauderbach of Porstmouth, VA and Donna L. Johnson of Chesapeake, VA. At his request, he was cremated. A military ceremony will be held at a later date for interment of his ashes at Ft. BELL, Alsie Myers, a resident of Montgomery for 76 years and originally Waynesboro, VA, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009. HOLT, Bolling Hall, III, age 58 died Friday, May 22, 2009. He was a lifelong resident of Montgomery and a 1972 graduate of Huntingdon College with a BA in biology. Bolling's passions were his children, family, guns, hunting, and was an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast. He was a gregarious, loving man, excited by life, and always ready to help anyone in need. He was active in many civic organizations. Bolling is a great-great-grandson of Dr. Samuel Doak Holt who was the first elected mayor of Montgomery. He was preceded in death by his father, Bolling Hall Holt, Jr., and mother, Faye Hinton Holt. He is survived by his wife Thea; son, Bolling H. TATUM, Rev. Marva Mitchner, a resident of Montgomery, AL was born July 8, 1938 in Randolph County, Cuthbert, GA. She departed this life at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, AL. Rev. Tatum was the Conference Evangelist for the Central Alabama AMEZ Church. She was also a graduate of Spelman College. Funeral services will be held Tues., May 26, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from Ebenezer AMEZ Church, Rev. Alonzo Crenshaw, officiating and The Right Rev. James E. McCoy, eulogizing. Interment will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Henderson-Powell Cemetery, Cuthbret, GA. RUSHING, Elise T., aged 86 died quietly in her home on May 21, 2009. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Henry O. Rushing anbd one son, D.R. (Randy) Rushing. Survivors include two sons, Terry M. and Micky H. Rushing; one daughter, Mariette R. Phillips; two grandsons, Brian K and Chad Anderson and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service in honor of her life will be held at Dalraida United Methodist Church on Monday, May 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Dalraida's minister, Ed Deabler will officiate the service. McCARTHY, Stephen F.
McCARTHY, Stephen F., 70, died peacefully at home on Thursday, July 23, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Carole McCarthy; daughters, Deborah Blanchard (Wallace), West Liberty, KY; Lisa McCarthy (Ed), Pleasant Gap, PA; son, Steve McCarthy, Jr. (Mari) Tokyo, Japan; stepchildren, Sharon Busby (John) , Greg Parker (Shanda) and Mike Parker; five grandchildren, Brittany and Jessica Busby, Winston and LauraAnn Parker and Seira McCarthy. He is also survived by three sisters; Gertrude Bissonnette, Patricia Couto and Mary Rodriques and many other family members all of Massachusetts. Steve was a member of Frazer Memorial UMC for over twenty-five years and a member of the Encouragers Sunday school class. A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2009 at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. John Schmidt officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service with burial immediately following in the cemetery. JULIAN, Marjorie Beringer
JULIAN, Marjorie Beringer, 87, died in Jackson, MS, on July 21, 2009. She was born in Eufaula, AL, on March 24, 1922, and lived most of her life in Montgomery, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Lloyd V. Julian, Sr. Margie was well-known for her love for her family, duplicate bridge, and her wonderful wit. She was a proud life master bridge player and enjoyed her many years at the Montgomery Bridge Club where she played with her dear lifelong friends at the Standard Club. She also taught Sunday School to little ones at Temple Beth-Or where she and her family were longtime members. Her family owned A. Nachman in downtown Montgomery. After retirement, she and her beloved husband, Lloyd, enjoyed years of traveling. Five years ago they moved to Madison, MS and resided at The Waterford, where they made many close friends. Margie will be remembered with great love and affection by her 3 sons and extended family and friends. They are: sons Lloyd, Jr., his wife Anne and their 3 daughters, Elizabeth Eley Julian, Laura (Julian) Obie, husband Eric and children Jackson and Harper, and Katherine Julian, all of Williamsburg, VA; Charles Julian, his wife Marilyn, and their 3 children, Charles Jr., Tom and wife Abby, and Jennifer (Julian) Jenkins, husband Jake and daughter Rebecca, all of the Jackson area; and Bill Julian and his wife Gina of Anniston, AL, and sons Andrew Julian of Birmingham, AL, and David Julian and his son, Landon of El Paso, TX. Also treasured family members, sister Eleanor (Beringer) Schlesinger of Reading, MA, her son Jimmy and wife Lorna of Ossining, NY, and daughter Susan (Schlesinger) Lederer of Reading, MA. Margie was especially close to her late brother, Arthur Beringer and his wife, Shirley and their children Rick and Marlene Beringer, Betty Lynn (Beringer) Goldberg and husband Bob of Montgomery, AL, Ken and Natalie Beringer of Marietta, GA, and Leslie (Beringer) Fitterman and husband Harvey of Marietta GA. The family will receive visitors at Leak Memory Chapel at12:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 26 followed by a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery.
