MINNA CURRIE
Minna Louise Sydow Currie, longtime resident of Montgomery, died June 26, 2004 in Midland, Texas. She was born May 2, 1920 in Framingham, Massachusetts to Hugo and Minna Sydow, who preceded her in death.
Educated in Framingham and at Simmons College in Boston, Minna was a registered nurse. Serving in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII, with her unit following the D-Day invasion into Normandy, Belgium, and Germany, she attained the rank of 1st Lt., and was awarded the WWII Victory medal and the Bronze Star.
After her marriage in May 1947, she moved to the South. Minna resumed her nursing career in the 1960s at Professional Center Hospital in Montgomery, and retired from John Knox Manor Nursing Home in 1983. She never retired from helping others, and even in her last days at Rockwood Manor Nursing Home in Midland, spent time at the nurses’ station “helping“ them with their paperwork.
Minna modeled thrift, hard work and loyalty, but most of all a steadfast faith in the Lord through good and hard times.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Ellen (Muff) Fregia of Midland; her son, Dr. David Paul Currie (and wife Molly) of Sylacauga, AL; five grandsons: James A. Fregia II (and wife Merie) of Los Angeles, CA; Capt. Justin A. Fregia of Colorado Springs, CO; PV2 Joel A. Fregia of Monterey, CA; D. Paul Currie, Jr. (and wife Jacqueline), and Philip A. Currie; a great granddaughter, Sarah Margaret Currie, all of Birmingham, AL; two brothers: Carl A. Sydow of Framingham and George R. Sydow (and wife Barbara) of Vero Beach, FL; sisters-in-law Shirley Sydow of Alton Bay, NH and Eunice Nelson of Montana; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roswell Ernest Currie, and a brother, Dr. Paul F.Sydow.
A memorial/resurrection service will be conducted July 31st, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2130 Bell Road, Montgomery, with the Rev. Patrick Smith officiating; visitation will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Memorial Church or to the Presbyterian Home for Children, PO Drawer 577, Talledega, AL 35161. Minna donated her body to Texas Tech University Medical School in Lubbock, TX.

BELLACH, Faye, of Montgomery, passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2004. Mrs. Bellach was born in Crenshaw County to Abbie Lee and Frank Bennett. She is survived by her husband, Harold Bellach, a son, Terry Bellach and daughters Sharon Sasser and Keri Hess; grandsons, Michael Sasser, Kyle Sasser, and Brandon Cripple; granddaughters, Kayla Bellach and Kristen Sasser; a sister, Charlotte Scott. A brother, Jeffrey Bennett, preceded her in death. She was a loving mother to her children. Only God knows the true love of this dear sweet woman that is now in Heaven above. CALDWELL, Glenn, 88, of Mont gomery, Alabama passed away Saturday, July 31, 2004. He was a 50-year member of the Knights Templar Lodge in Waukegan, IL. Mr. Caldwell retired from the United States Navy after a career spanning 23 years. His wife, Mary J. Caldwell, a son, Glenn T. Caldwell of Marietta, GA.; a sister, Elsie Mae Clary of Winter Haven, FL.; a brother, Chauncey Willis Caldwell of Kennesaw, GA., and a niece, Cynthia L. Phillips of Virginia Beach, VA, survive him. CARMICHAEL, Rev. John C., 82, a native of Glenwood, Alabama, and a resident of Spanish Fort, died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at a local hospital. He was a graduate of Troy State University, and advanced studies at Candler School of Theology. He was ordained in 1945 as an Elder of the South, Alabama, West Florida United Methodist Conference. He retired from the Itinerate Ministry in June 1985. He then served as a supply minister until June 1995. He moved to West Minister Village in Spanish Fort in 2000. He was serving as seniors’ Pastor at West Minister for the Spanish Fort United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, LaMerle Johnson Carmichal, Spanish Fort, AL; son, Daniel Asher Carmichael, Spanish Fort, AL; daughter, Keitha Carmichael Duncan, Pensacola, FL; brother, Billy Wayne Carmichael, Stockbridge, GA; four sisters, Evelyn Starling, Anniston, AL, Christine Hixon, Troy, AL, Evanell Jackson, Glenwood, AL and Enid Folmar, Glenwood, AL and three grandchildren. SOWELL, Walter Frank
SOWELL, Walter Frank. Retired Auburn University agronomist Walter Frank Sowell, whose work in soil fertility helped thousands of Alabama farmers reap bigger harvests, died August 1, 2004. He was 82. Sowell, a long time resident of Auburn, retired in 1980 from the University’s Cooperative Extension System following a 32-year career with that organization. He was superior of county agents in 23 Southeastern Counties at the time he retired. Through his success as an Extension Agronomist promoting soil testing and efficient use of lime and fertilizers, he became known as one of the state’s foremost authorities on plant nutrition. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Auburn First Baptist Church with the Reverend Jim Evans officiating. Ex-POW’s and members of Sowell Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be held immediately following the memorial service at the church. The family respectfully requests that memorials be in the form of contributions to Auburn First Baptist Church or Habitat for Humanity. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Inez Green Sowell; two daughters, Gwynne Lovelady of Auburn and Marcia Duke of Liberty, MO; grandchildren, Susan and Warren Beason, Birmingham, Wesley Duke, St. Louis, MO, Hillary Kathryn Duke, Liberty, MO and Adam and Tracey Lovelady, Atlanta, GA; one sister, Sarah Baker of Enterprise and one brother, Charles R. Sowell of Headland. Sowell served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII as a radio operator/gunner on a B-17 bomber. His plane was hit by enemy fire over Germany on his eighth bombing mission. After parachuting from the burning plane, Sowell was captured by enemy soldiers and spent the next 625 days as a prisoner of war, most of that time in the infamous Stalag 17B (made famous after the war by the movie ”Stalag 17” and the television series ”Hogan’s Heroes”). Sowell returned from the war to earn B.S. and M.S. degrees in agriculture from Auburn University (then Alabama Polytechnic Institute) and a PhD. in agronomy from Purdue University. During the last years of his life, he embarked on what he called his ninth mission; meeting with young people in schools and churches around the state, urging them to cherish and protect their hard-won freedom. She was a loving mother and grandmother who was always willing to help others. She was a weaver in the weave shed at Tallassee Mills for 45 years. MCMILLAN, Mrs. Elvira Minge Cochrane, age 91, of McLellan Street, Brewton, Alabama, passed away Sunday evening August 1, 2004 at her residence, after an extended illness. She was born February 28, 1913 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the fourth child of Robert Hunt Cochrane and Elvira Minge Cochrane. Both parents were descendants of the earliest settlers of West Alabama. Mrs. McMillan had been a resident of Brewton since 1938. She was the widow of Thomas E. McMillan. She graduated from the University of Alabama and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Mrs. Millan was a founding member of her home parish, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and a charter member of Escambia County Historical Sorority. Survivors include three sons, Ed Leigh (Ann) McMillan of Brewton, Alabama, Thomas E. (Jane) McMillan, Jr. of Brewton, Alabama and Robert C. (Candy) McMillan of Brewton, Alabama; two daughters, Katherine M. (Paul) Owens of Brewton, Alabama and Elvira M. Tate of Atlanta, Georgia; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Albert C. Tate, Jr. and one grandchild, Elizabeth Owens. Graveside services are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon August 4, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. at Union Cemetery with Rev. Gary Baldwin officiating.
