BANKER, Beatrice Geraldine

BANKER, Beatrice Geraldine, 82, a resident of Montgomery, AL, died Monday, November 4, 2002. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 7, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Leak-Memory Chapel with Rev. Fred Fuller and Dr. Sid Locke officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Beatrice Geraldine Banker was born on 13 May 1920 in Stoneham, Mass/., and graduated September 1942 from Newton Hospital Nursing College, Mass., as a certified registered nurse. In February 1943 she joined the Army Nurse Corp. and began her career serving her country. Her first command was in Boston. She served in New York, Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Australia, Okinawa, New Guinea and the Philippines. She was a veteran of World War II. She stood dress uniform for Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1953 she married Harold L. Banker, a disabled veteran of World War II, and two years later in 1955 received a discharge due to pregnancy. She was discharged at the rank of captain and received three bronze stars to the Pacific ribbon and an Honorable Service Award. Mrs. Banker then transferred her military service career to civil service and became a nurse at the Maxwell Air Force Base Hospital, working in obstetrics and pediatrics. She retired in 1970. Beatrice Geraldine Banker was a pioneer woman-one of many paving the way for the changes for women in military history. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Hal” Lloyd Banker and her parents Elora Phelps Powers and Gerald Powers. She is survived by her son, Lee Kendall (Debbie Hudman) Banker and one grandson, Jason Brett (Monica) Banker. Active Pallbearers will be Lee Banker, Jason Banker, Bobby Cannon, Wayne Tatum, Richard Cleghorn and James Cannon. Honorary Pallbearers will her family at Arrowhead Manor. Memorial contributions may be made to Women in Military Service For America Memorial, Dept. 560, Washington, DC 20042-0560 or one’s choice of charity. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at Leak-Memory from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Leak-Memory Chapel Directing

FOLSOM, John P. Sr.

FOLSOM, John P. Sr., “Boom Paw”, 71, a lifelong resident of Montgomery, AL, died unexpectedly at his residence on Saturday, November 2, 2002. Funeral services will be held at Leak-Memory Chapel on Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with Father William P. Folsom officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents, William P. and Mary Folsom; his sister, Mary Dean Folsom, his loving wife of 44 years, Vivian B. Folsom and his son, John P. Folsom, Jr. Survivors include his two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary F. and William Barse and Patricia F. and Wayne Gradwell; his brother, Father William P. Folsom; four grandsons, Vince Gradwell, Blake Gradwell, Zack Gradwell and J. P. Folsom, III; his mother-in-law, Dovie Blankenship; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Ronald) Houston brothers-in-law, John A. FORESTER, Catherine Agnew, widow of the late Dr. Charles S. Forester, passed away November 4, 2002. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 6th at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with Bishop Paul Duffey, Dr. Karl Stegall, the Reverend Torrence Maxey and the Reverend Joe Hastings officiating. LEWIS, Mrs. Annie, a resident of Montgomery, AL., died Friday, November 2, 2002. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from Weeping Willow Baptist Church with Rev. L.F. Ross, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. She leaves to cherish her memories: Four children: Richard Lewis of Montgomery, AL., Anna (Charles) Thomas of Marion, IN., Squire Lewis, Jr. of New York, NY., Eunice (Russell) Broome of New York, NY.; Five grandchildren: Elder Jerome (Andrea) Thomas of Norfolk, VA., Charlene (Greg) Rice of Marion, IN., Chariss “Ree“ (Jerry) Knox of Columbia, SC., Keesha Peterson of Montgomery, AL., and Timothy Broome of New York, NY.; Eight great-grandchildren. Eight great nieces, Nine great nephews. She also leaves to mourn a loving and devoted nurse and companion, Felicia McCrimon; and a host of other relatives and caring friends.

DORROUGH, Dr. Robert L., a resident of Montgomery, AL.

The family will receive friends at Brooks-Cargile Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 8, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home with Pastor Grady Russell officiating with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Dr. Dorrough’s parents were Ivor Lee and Effie Adkins Dorrough of Birmingham, AL.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Darnell Dorrough, Montgomery, AL; three sons, Fred W. Dorrough, Morrison, CO, David L. Dorrough, Marietta, GA and John C. Dorrough, Delmar, MD; one daughter, Cathryn D. Zannini, Flagstaff, AZ; one sister, Carol D. Hart, Birmingham, AL; one sister-in-law, Helen W. (Frances) Dorrough, Montgomery, AL and seven grandchildren. Extended family includes Randy Morgan, Michael Morgan, Richard Dorrough, Mark Hart, Jody Hart Gonzalez, Scott Dorrough, Stephen Dorrough and Sheila Dorrough Michaels.

Dr. Dorrough served in the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II as an infantryman and later as a medic, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. He graduated from Birmingham Southern College, magna cum laude in 1948 and from the Medical College of Washington University, St. Louis, MO in 1951.

Dr. Dorrough practiced in Montgomery for over 22 years as a general and vascular surgeon. Prior to practicing as a surgeon in Alabama, Dr. Dorrough served as a medical missionary in the Philippines and Korea. When he returned to the United States, he spent two years at Emory University, Atlanta, GA on the surgical service. During his twenty-two years of practice in Montgomery, he served tours as Chief of Surgery at both Baptist Hospital and St. Margaret’s Hospital.

After his retirement from practice in 1986, Dr. Dorrough worked for other veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Regional Office, Adjudication Division. In his spare time, he devoted countless hours to the study of genealogy and created ý005 . 0000.00ţThe Dorrough/Dorrough Family Chronicle, a newsletter compiled with extensive research on family history. Dr. Dorrough was an avid gardener and excellent amateur photographer and greatly assisted The Montgomery County Heritage Book Committee. PIRTLE, Nannie Gaye Pettus, age 84, died at her home on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at approximately 1:00 a.m. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, W. Hocker Pirtle and a granddaughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Pirtle. She is survived by son, Dr. H. Winston Pirtle, Sr., (Christina); daughter, Gaye Pirtle Clayton (Kolie); grandsons, James Wesley Shaw (Margie) and H. Winston Pirtle, Jr. (Tyra) and granddaughters, Susan Grace Pirtle and Caroline Elizabeth Pirtle; great grandchildren, Trevor Talmon Shaw and Erin Elizabeth Shaw, Neal Winston Pirtle and J.B. Howell, III. She is also survived by one sister, Vencille Pettus Ford of Oldsmar, FL; several nieces and nephews and her loyal friend, Arwilda Harvey. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 6, 2002 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home.
