Stanhope E. Elmore, Jr.

Owner and President of Dothan Coca-Cola Bottling Company

Stanhope E. Elmore, Jr., a resident of Dothan, died Sunday, October 13, 2002.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity with Father Walter LeBatt and Father John Mark Wiggins officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of American, P.O. Box 2028, Dothan, Alabama, 36302, Wiregrass Hospice, P. O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, Alabama, 36302, the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 205 Holly Lane, Dothan, Alabama, 36301 or a favorite charity.

Mr. Elmore was born May 26, 1921, in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Stanhope E. Elmore and Kate Durr Elmore. He attended both public and private schools in Montgomery, graduating from Starke University School in 1938.

He attended the University of the South, at Sewanee, Tennessee, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity receiving a BS Degree in Mathematics and was Salutatorian of his class. He was a member of Phi Betta Kappa.

After graduating from college, Mr. Elmore enlisted in the United States Air Corps, and was sent by the Air Corps to the University of Chicago to study meteorology. After finishing this course he was promoted from Cadet to Second Lieutenant and spent the next Year training with the 461st Bomb Group in the States. In January of 1944 the 461st Bomb group was sent to Italy, as a part of the 15th Air Force and stayed in Italy until the end of the War in Europe. He returned to the United States in July of 1945, and after the surrender of the Japanese was discharged in October of 1945 as a Captain.

After his discharge, Mr. Elmore went to work for the Montgomery CocaCola Bottling Company, and after a short time there, he went to work as Sales Manager for the CocaCola Bottling Company in Independence Kansas, serving in that job for a little over 7 years. In 1954, he came to Dothan to manage the Coca-Cola Plant, and from 1961 until his retirement on September 30, 1986, he served as President of the Dothan Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Inc.

Mr. Elmore was very active in the Civic Affairs of Dothan, serving twice as Drive Chairman of the Wiregrass United Way, was President of Alabama-Florida Council of the Boy Scouts, was Chairman of the Board of the Dothan Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Red Cross Chapter, President of the Dothan Rotary Club, President of AUSA Chapter at Fort Rucker, and served 20 years on the Dothan Planning Commission, five times as Chairman. He was also active in the Alabama Soft Drink Association, serving on the Board for 9 years and 2 years as President. He served as a Director of the SouthTrust Bank of Dothan, and as director of DurrFillauer Medical, Inc., a public company head-quartered in Montgomery, Alabama.

In 1946, Mr. Elmore married Geogilee (“Hank“) Henry of Marionville, Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Elmore were confirmed in the Episcopal Church in Independence, Kansas and Mr. Elmore served on the Vestry for 5 years. After moving to Dothan, he was elected to the vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, and served three times as Senior Warden. He also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Diocese of Alabama and the Diocese of he Central Gulf Coast. He also served the local Parish in Dothan as a Lay Reader and a Chalice Barrier.

Mr. Elmore was preceded in death by a brother, Nesbit Elmore.

Mr. Elmore is survived by his wife, “Hank“, Dothan; two daughters, Kate Elmore Wolverton and husband, Robert, Longwood, Florida and Jane Elmore Mickle and husband, Drew, of Huntington Beach, California; three grandchildren, Sara Hope Mickle, Henry Joseph Wolverton and James Andrew Mickle. He is also survived by two brothers, Dr. John Durr Elmore of Birmingham and William Bellingrath Elmore of Charleston, South Carolina; a sister, Kate Durr Elmore of Montgomery; several nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Wheeless of the Church of the Nativity, Williams Hicks of the Montgomery Coca-Cola Plant, Randy Mayfield, of the Alabama-Florida Council, BSA, George McClintock, Stanley Thornell and Rufus Davis, all of Dothan, Joe Harper of Panama City, members of the Hacker’s Golf Group of the Dothan County Club.

BENSON, Mrs. Lillie Mae

BENSON, Mrs. Lillie Mae, 87, a resident of Tallassee, Alabama, died October 13, 2002. She was born on November 29, 1914. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at East Tallassee Church of Christ with Sons and grandsons officiating. Burial will follow in Carrville Cemetery.

Survivors include sons, Byron L. (Carolyn) Benson and Jimmie C. (Ardeth) Benson; grandsons, Lee (LayLa) Benson, Blaine (Patty) Benson, Clay (Julie) Benson and Clint (Tara) Benson; great-grandchildren, Emma Lane Benson, Lily Mae Benson, Carter Reid Benson, Anna Grace Benson, Brinlee Claire Benson and Braxton McDonald; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Leon Benson.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 15, 2002 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

BEASLEY, Daniel L.

BEASLEY, Daniel L., 92, a former resident of Tuskegee, Alabama, died Thursday, October 10, 2002 in the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Cincinnati, OH.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from Chehaw A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Leon Henderson, Presiding Elder, Tuskegee District, A.M.E. Zion Churches with Rev. L.M. Randolph, Eulogist, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with Peoples Funeral Home Directing.

Survivors include one daughter, Faye C. Beasley (Alonzo) Feagan, Pittsburgh, PA; one granddaughter, Evelyn Faye (Nathl) Moore, Cincinnati, OH; one grandson, Lawrence W. (Katherine) Scott, III, Frederick, MD; four grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Beasley, Tuskegee, AL; two sisters-in-law; one goddaughter, Chana Johnson, Huntsville, AL and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2002 from 2:00 p.m. until 7;00 p.m. with family hour from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peoples Funeral Home, 500 Fonville Street.

MAYE, Mr. Jim Willie

MAYE, Mr. Jim Willie, was born July 22, 1950 in Greenville, Alabama to the late Mr. John Henry Maye and Mrs. Pearline Hampton Maye.

At an early age he joined the Macedonia Baptist Church.

Later he moved his membership, with the St. Francis Missionary Baptist Church.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Mrs. Alma P. Maye; nine children, Denise Maye, Cornelius Maye of Greenville, Alabama, Casandra Maye, Atlanta, Georgia, Willie Steven Maye, Jim Willie (Nicole) Maye, Jr., Cory (LaTausha) Maye, Charles A. (Shenee) Ruffin, Alisha Michelle (Thomas) Jones, all of Rochester, NY an Ruby Jewel (Richard) Sims of Giessen, Germany; 12 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Services will be held at the St. Francis Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2002.

Final Arrangements entrusted to Southside Mortuary.

PERDUE, Rev. Werle, Jr.

PERDUE, Rev. Werle, Jr., was born March 1, 1941 to Mr. and Mrs. Werle Perdue, Sr. (Ellen) in Butler County, Alabama.

He departed this life October 10, 2002.

Rev. Werle leaves to cherish his memories a very devoted and loving wife, Marie Perdue.

He was the father of Michael Peagler, Sonja (Ronald) Williams, Tony (Melissia) Peagler, Pastor Cecilia (Chester) Adams, Annette (Darryl) Brown, Keith (Patricia) Peagler, Kevin Peagler and Patrick Peagler; one loving sister, Elizabeth (Charlie) Brown; two brothers, Norman (Willie Mae) Perdue and Edward (Linda) Perdue, all of Greenville, Alabama; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; a loving daughter-in-law, Dr. Peggy L. Peagler; a loving sister-in-law, Emma Albritton and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at Dunston Gym Lomax Hannon Jr. College on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. Final Arrangements entrusted to Southside Mortuary.

BOAN, Mr. Hubert Wayne

BOAN, Mr. Hubert Wayne, age 69, born in Georgiana, AL, and a resident of Bay Minette, AL, died Sunday, October 13, 2002 at his sister’s residence in Wetumpka, AL. He was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for the State of Alabama Highway Department. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Boan was a member of Azalea Masonic Lodge #898, Scottish Rite, Abba Temple Shrine, VFW, AM Vets Post #2298, Callaway, Florida.

He is survived by two brothers, Albert Boan, Panama City, FL and Willie M. Boan, Jr., Mobile, AL; one sister, Ann Prescotte, Wetumpka, AL; one niece, Sharon Comerford, Lynn Haven, FL and one nephew, Pete Prescotte, Wetumpka, AL.

Masonic graveside services and burial will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Crossroads Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 15, 2002 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Home.

Although the family will accept flowers, they suggest memorial contributions be made to the Abba Temple Shrine Crippled Children’s Transportation Fund, 7701 Hitt Road, Mobile, Alabama, 36695.

Funeral arrangements are by Norris Funeral Home, Bay Minette, Alabama.

LEWIS, Webster M.

LEWIS, Webster M., 84, a resi dent of Montgomery, died Saturday, October 26, 2002 in Snellville, GA. Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. from Leak-Memory Chapel with Minister Doug Smith and Minister Rex Turner, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with full Military Honors. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by: his wife, Ruby Houston Lewis; two brothers and one sister. He is survived by: three sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Holly Lewis, Paul and Gay Lewis and Webster M. Jr. and Carol Lewis; two stepchildren: Bonnie and Carl Adrian and Jerry and Sandy Burton; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 29, 2002 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at LeakMemory Chapel.
