STEELE, Charles Beckett
STEELE, Charles Beckett, Captain USAF, Retired, was born May 23, 1921 and died at his home in Montgomery, Alabama on August 29, 2002 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Alderson, West Virginia, the fifth of eight children to Marie Beckett and Robert Morton Steele.
Charles attended Lees-McRae College before enlisting during WWII where he received pilot training and became a B-29 pilot, entering combat in the Pacific Theatre. He later attended weather school at Chanute Field and served as a weather officer. He was assigned to Arlington Hall, Washington, D.C. during the Cold War. Later, while stationed at a listening post at Misawai, Japan, Charles intercepted and deciphered an entire encryption system for Russian military communication.
Upon retiring from the Air Force, Charles served the USAF in the Civil Service at Robins AFB, Georgia, and later Lockheed Corporation in Tehran, Iran as a materiel logistics officer. During this period he also received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgia College, and his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Georgia.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, the former Frances Brown McDowell; his daughter, Sue Steele, Atlanta, Georgia; two step-children, Rex McDowell (Ellen Sellers), Dallas, Texas and Carla McDowell, Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren, Emily, Ginny, Mary Susan and Kate McDowell, Dallas, Texas and Jessica McDowell, Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Virginia Steele, Santa Rosa, California and Mary Steele Morgan, Amesville, Ohio and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at White Chapel, Montgomery, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, with interment at New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma to follow.

RUTHERFORD, Mrs. Ethel W., 91, a resident of Birmingham, AL, died Friday, August 30, 2002. She was a resident of Fairhaven Retirement Home of Birmingham. Mrs. Rutherford was a longtime Montgomery, AL, resident, where she was a member of the Capitol Heights United Methodist Church in Montgomery and was retired from the Alabama Department of Health in Montgomery.
