MS. LIPSCOMB
WEST POINT -- Ms. Fannie Lee Lipscomb of West Point died Sunday, July 4, 2004 at Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange.
Funeral services are scheduled Friday, July 9 at 3 p.m. at Emanuel Chapel C.M.E. Church in West Point with the Revs. Lovette Thornton, Valerie McNeill and Gary L. Fanning officiating. Burial will follow in Marseilles Cemetery.
Ms. Lipscomb is survived by one daughter, Aretha (Carleton) Jones of West Point; four sisters, Clara Davidson, Ethel Mae Winston, Annie Lee Cotton and Connie Mae Lipscomb, all of West Point; three granddaughters, Tracy Marie Lipscomb, Virginia (Roderick) Palmer, Ametris Jones (Eric Williams) all of West Point; six great-grandchildren, Demonte' Artez Lipscomb, Rodriegus Vashawn Lipscomb, Qua'Esha Tanique Palmer, Lanija Symone Davis, Tye'Esha Bre'Sheonta Palmer and Eric Maurice Williams, all of West Point; two dear and devoted god daughters, Barbara Winston and Satunja Johnson, both of West Point, nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends.
Born Jan. 12, 1941, Ms. Lipscomb was the daughter of Mr. Joseph Cooper and Mrs. Fannie Kate Cooper. She served on the stewardess board at the Emanuel Chapel C.M.E. Church. A sister, Alberta McCullough, and a brother, Willie Gene Lipscomb, preceded her in death.
The remains will lie in state at the church on Friday from 2 p.m. until the funeral hour.
The family may be contacted at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Jones, 1015 Dogwood Circle in West Point or at the residence of Ms. Tracy M. Lipscomb, 1007 Avenue D in West Point.

MR. McGOWAN
CEDARTOWN, Ga. -- Mr. John Benton McGowan Sr. of Cedartown died Tuesday, July 6, 2004 in Nashville, Tenn.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Zuker McGowan; five children, Joan McCrea McGowan (John) LaGrasse of Nashville and Brentwood, Tenn., Diana Ossian McGowan (Earl) Morehead of Whitesburg, Ga., John Benton McGowan Jr. of Carrollton, Ga. Pauline (Polly) Dinsmore McGowan (Hal) Stadnik of Albany, Ga. and Arthur Banks McGowan of Rome, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two stepsons, Mark (Rita) McCown of Cedartown and Bill (Cristy) McCown of Marietta.
Born in Fitzgerald, Ga. on May 17, 1930, He was raised there by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Benton and by his uncle and aunt, Arthur Ossian Benton and Iola Kirby Benton of West Point. A graduate of Culver military Academy in Culver, Ind. and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, he was a textile engineer until he retired in 1997. Mr. McGowan was an avid golfer and bridge player. Preceding him in death were his parents, Jesse Ludenbarr McGowan and Grace Benton McGowan and his first wife, Joan McCrea McGowan Wilson.
Visitation will be held on Friday July 9 from 5 until 6 p.m. at the Gammage Funeral Home in Cedartown. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. in the funeral home chapel and Burial will be in Tifton, Ga. on Saturday, July 17.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, The Alive Hospice of Nashville, Tenn. or a charitable organization of one's choice.

MRS. MONROE
LANETT -- Mrs. Kathryn "Polly" Gough Monroe, 75, of Lanett died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
Funeral services are scheduled Friday, July 9 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Revs. Clifford DeLee, Donald DeLee and Terry Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.
Mrs. Monroe is survived by her husband, Henry Monroe; four daughters, Sarah (Larry) Whaley of Valley; Kathy (Gene) Williams of Lanett, Mary (Jimmie) Atkins of Lanett and Debra (Harris) McDonald of Valley; two sons, Gene (Peggy) Gough of Lanett and Bobby (Shirley) Gough of LaGrange; four stepdaughters, Debra (Chip) Stover, Janice (Jim) Morris, Gloria Ann (Ed) Ward and Frances (Lavan) Oliver; one sister, Ethel Adcock; two brothers, George Turner and Pete Turner; 24 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Born on Dec. 28, 1928 in Hogansville, Mrs. Monroe was the daughter of the late Annie Beatrice Smith and James Homer Turner. She was a member of Community Baptist Church of LaFayette. Mrs. Monroe was a devoted homemaker. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Reed Gough.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

MR. BELL
ROANOKE -- Mr. James Jimmy Bell, 79, of Buffalo, N.Y., died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Millard Fillmore Grater Hospital in Buffalo.
Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday, July 7 at Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke at noon CDT with the Rev. Elijah Jackson Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Wehadkee Church Cemetery.
Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Mozelle Bell of LaFayette; three sons, Donald Bell and J.T. Bell of LaFayette and Alvin (Alvetta) Bell of Montgomery, Ala.; two daughters, Debra Wilson of Roanoke and Dorothy Bell of LaFayette; one brother, Leroy (Betty) Bell Sr. of Anniston; three sisters, Carrie Jones of Roanoke, Betty Richardson of Atlanta and Lera Bell of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Public viewing hours will be observed at Clark Memorial Funeral Service in Roanoke from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral services.

MR. BURTON
DOTHAN, Ala. -- Mr. Jessie Walter Burton, Jr., 67, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004 with his family lovingly at his side.
Funeral services were scheduled Saturday, July 3 at 11 a.m. at New Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Slocom, Ala., with the Rev. David Cord officiating. Burial followed in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Dothan.
Mr. Burton is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Frances Burton of Dothan; one son, Johnny Burton of Dothan; one daughter, Pamela Thompson and her husband, Antonio of Park Forrest, Ill; two granddaughters, Aristar Burton of Dothan and Aniya Thompson of Park Forest; five brothers, the Rev Napoleon (Pearlie) Darden, Elder Fred (Pastor Alice) Darden, James (Mary Alice) Darden, all of Valley, the Rev. J.D. (Mary) Darden of Lanett and Walter Joe Burton of Columbus; seven sisters, Essie Copeland, Carrie (Tommy) Meadows, both of Lanett, Annie Edwards of Valley, Martha (Ervin) Herrey of LaGrange, Linda Sue Kimbrough of Tampa, Fla., Alice Berg of Columbus, Ga. and Barbara Ann Carter of Valley; aunts and a host of nieces, nephews; brothers-in-law, Superintendent Joe (Josephine) Murry of Slocom and Robert March of Dothan; sisters-in law, Dorothy Darden, Rose Murry, Pinnie Hunter and Sarah (David) Northern; many other sorrowing relatives and friends. His death will leave a void in the hearts of people who knew and loved him.
A native of Fairfax, Mr. Burton moved to Dothan in 1963. He served his country in the United States Army and was a former welder with Jordan Pile Driving Company and Farley Nuclear Plant, where he served as the business agent for two terms. He then became employed with the Houston County Sheriff's Department.
His example and influence will forever live in the hearts and minds of those who worked with him and loved him dearly. His career spanned more than 30 years until his health failed, causing him to retire.
Mr. Burton was an exceptionally gifted thinker and a great observer of the world. He enjoyed exploring and learning new things daily. An unselfish community leader, he was a passionate advocate of social justice and equality and was a man of great kindness and compassion. He had a generous spirit and the ability to maintain a positive outlook in the most difficult of situations. Everyone Mr. Burton met became his friend, and each of his hundreds of friends was cherished as a unique and interesting person. he showered many with his generous giving, and all were blessed whose lives he touched. Mr. Burton had enormous respect for everyone and was highly respected by his colleagues. He had a good life bound by hard work and respect, making him a part of the city of Dothan's fabric. It was often said that he was a welder by trade but a carpenter by heart with a passion for learning, creating and building lasting relationships.

ALEXANDER CITY -- Mrs. Grace Carr, 94, of Alexander City, formerly of Camp Hill, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Russell Medical Center in Alexander City.
Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday, July 6 at 1 p.m. CDT at Sardis Missionary Baptist Church in Camp Hill with the Rev. C.W. Fielder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Carr is survived by two devoted daughters, Antionette (Billy) Todd and Ellen Scott, both of Camp Hill; eight grandchildren, Billy Todd Jr. of Vaiden, Miss., Anita Primm of Akron, Ohio, Alvin Todd of Tulsa, Okla., Awanda Todd of Opelika, Aretha Todd of Birmingham, Ala., Calvin Scott of Oakland, Calif., Cary Scott of Atlanta and Carolyn Scott of Alexander City; 18 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Carr was a member of Sardis Baptist Church, where she was a musician for many years. She was also a well-known seamstress in both the Chambers County and Tallapoosa County communities. Mrs. Carr was preceded in death by her husband, Tutt Carr.

ROANOKE -- Mr. Richard Derrick "Rick" Holmes, 43, of Roanoke died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at the Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta.
Funeral services were scheduled Sunday, July 4 at 2 p.m.at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley with the Rev. Horace Harper officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.
Mr. Holmes is survived by his wife, Kimberly Holmes; four daughters, Elizabeth Dianne Holmes of Hogansville, Ga., Andrea Elaine Holmes of Hogansville, Rickie Marie Glass of Roanoke and Ronni Suzanne Holmes of Roanoke; one son, James Jackson Holmes of Hogansville; his mother, Dorothy Cowart of Lanett; two brothers, Ronald Wayne Holmes of Roanoke and Homer Jackson Cowart of Lanett; and one grandson, Andrew Donald Hill of Hogansville.
Born in Sylacauga, Ala. Oct. 15, 1960, Mr. Holmes was employed in construction. He was preceded in death by his father, James Riley Holmes, and his sister, Teresa Diana Jones.

Born in Chambers County Dec. 4, 1936, Mr. Penn was the son of the late Joe Penn Sr. and Mrs. Carrie Lee Washington. He was retired from Lanett Mill with more than 32 years of service and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Renesia Brady and Marion Ross.
The family will receive friends Monday, July 5 from 6 to 7 p.m. at M.W. Lee Mortuary.

LANETT -- Mr. William V. Randles, 62, of Lanett died Saturday, July 3, 2004 at his residence.

Mr. Randles is survived by his wife, E. Jean Randles; two daughters, Rebecca Randles of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Melania (Michael) O'Hara of Mattydale, N.Y.; one brother, Richard (Linda) Randles of Cambridge, N.Y.; two sons, Mark (Siodhah) Dominy of Texas and Scott (Trina) Dominy of Lanett; and three grandchildren, Kayla Smith, Erick O'Hara and Ashley O'Hara.
Born Dec. 2, 1941 in Cambridge, N.Y., Mr. Randles was employed as an over-the-road truck driver. He loved fishing and stock car racing, where he drove his own car. He was a member of Huguley United Methodist Church.
