MRS. SANDERS
LaFAYETTE -- Mrs. Annie Laurie Burton Sanders, 94, of LaFayette died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004 at Chapman Health Care in Alexander City, Ala.
Funeral services are scheduled Thursday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in LaFayette with the Revs. Wayne Barrett and Alton Parris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Sanders is survived by two sons, Donald (Grace) Sanders of Eufaula, Ala., and Hoyt (Kay) Sanders of Bay Pine, Ala.; one daughter-in-law, Irmgard Sanders of Eufaula; three sisters, Ruby Drake of Opelika, Claude Isabell of LaFayette and Jimmie (the Rev. Alton) Parris of Rainbow City, Ala.; two brothers, Charlie (Pearline) Burton of Camp Hill and Guy (Peggy) Burton of Lanett; two sisters-in-law, Myrtis Burton of Camp Hill and Margaret Burton of Camp Hill; five grandchildren, Birgit and Joe Triano, Doug and Dainie Sanders, Mike and Cindy Sanders, Ashley Sanders and Matthew Sanders; 12 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Born in Tallapoosa County April 20, 1910, Mrs. Sanders was the daughter of the late James Monroe Burton and Susan Elizabeth McEachern Burton. She was a graduate of Chambers County High School and Jacksonville Teachers College. Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Audrey Houston Sanders; a son, James K. Sanders; a grandson, Gene Sanders; six sisters, Gladys Burton, Edith Sanders, Clara LeCroy, Eunice Welch, Mary Sanders and Cenus Harris; and three brothers, John Burton, Robert Burton and Edison Burton. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in LaFayette.

MRS. SMITH
LANETT -- Mrs. Sadie Smith, 86, of Brian Center in LaGrange, formerly of Lanett, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004 in LaGrange.
Funeral services are scheduled Thursday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. at Huguley United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bill Parker and Dennis Shaw officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Fran Sharpe of Enterprise, Ala., and Julie Wimbish of Marietta, Ga.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was born in Chambers County Sept. 9, 1917. Mrs. Smith retired from WestPoint Pepperell. She was a member of Huguley United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Vasti Chapter 431. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Frank Smith.
Visitation will be held at Huguley United Methodist Church Thursday, Sept. 2 from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT.

MR. GUTHRIE
VALLEY -- Mr. Thomas A. Guthrie, 94, of Valley died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with Dr. Jerome King officiating. Burial will follow at Shawmut Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hazel M. Guthrie; three sisters-in-law, Thelma Lane and Faith Pruitt of Valley and Francis Campbell of Leeds, Ala.; two brothers-in-law, Alfred Mangrum of Columbus, Ga., and J.H. Mangrum of Albertville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Guthrie was born July 22, 1910 in Dadeville, Ala., the son of the late Allen and Leslie Guthrie. He was a retired employee of WestPoint Stevens and a member of First Baptist Church of Shawmut. He loved gardening, fishing and his pet deer. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Grady Guthrie and Robert Guthrie; and three sisters, Eula Mae Guthrie, Mary Guthrie and Stella Guthrie.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

OPELIKA -- Mr. Thomas E. Moore, 57, of Opelika died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
Graveside services were scheduled Monday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. at Shawmut Cemetery,
Mr. Moore is survived by two sons, Thomas Jarrod (Kelli) Moore Sr. of LaFayette and Richard Shane Moore of Beauregard; one brother, Donald (Betty) Moore of Bakersville, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Born Feb. 11, 1947 in Chambers County, Mr. Moore was the son of the late Elma Pratt Moore and Alvin Moore. He was a retired employee of International Wood Co. Mr. Moore was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed wood working and was an avid coin collector.

Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church in Lanett with the Rev. Walter Darden and the Rev. Charles Trammell officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John Community Baptist Church Cemetery on State Line Road in Lanett.
Mrs. Birden is survived by her daughter, Mattie (Frank) Taylor of West Point; three sons, Gary (Mary) Hollis and Columbus Hollis, both of LaGrange, and Nathaniel (Jennifer) Hollis of Lanett; one sister, Mattie (James) Walker of Cataula, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, Mary Glaze, Eddie Hulin of West Point, Gloria Glaze of Dayton, Ohio, Demetress, Lamar, Gary and Anthony Hollis, all of Lanett, Roderick and Marco Holloway of Lanett, Victor Dunn of Valley and Maketta Allen of West Point; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A native of Chambers County, Mrs. Birden was born May 25, 1921. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest, and two sisters, Elizabeth Davidson and Mandy Dawson.
The body will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour.

VALLEY -- Mrs. Annie Thelma Harper, 81, of Valley died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at her residence.
Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church of Cusseta with the Revs. Arthur Thomas and Terry Magby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Harper is survived by six daughters, Annie Lois Pollard of Valley, Mae Frances Harper of Valley, Ruby Dean Roberto of Lanett, Mary Harper (Jerry) Phillips of Valley, Virginia (Gene) Stevens of Cusseta and Brenda Harper of Valley; five sons, John Lee Harper of Valley, George L. (Linda) Harper of Cusseta, Jessie L. (Janice) Harper of Valley, Kenny L. Harper of Montgomery, Ala. and Larry O. (Norma) Harper of Valley; one sister, Lossie Will Morris of Atlanta; four sisters-in-law; Dennie Lee Harris, Evie Lee Harper of Brooklyn, N.Y., Odessa Taylor of Opelika and Ella Mae Harper of Valley; one brother-in-law, Jessie (Pie) Harper of Valley; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A Chambers County native, Mrs. Harper was born Dec. 1, 1922. She was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church of Cusseta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Ruben Harper.

VALLEY -- Mr. Johnny Lane Hatchett, 51, of Valley died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004 at Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange.
Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Revs. Lanita Cotney, Gerald Cotney Jr. and Bill Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Langdale Cemetery.
Mr. Hatchett is survived by his wife, Tammy L. Hatchett; two sisters, Leanne (Charles) Griggs of Beauregard and Joy (Bill) Williams of Valley; two nephews, Jonathan Griggs of Beauregard and Jason Williams of Valley; one niece, Jennifer Goodwin of Valley; several aunts, one uncle, cousins and special friends Alan and Deona Isabell.
Born Sept. 13, 1952 in Valley, Mr. Hatchett was the son of the late Mary Ruth Lane Hatchett and John Willie Hatchett. He was a lifelong resident of the Valley area and had attended Valley High School. He was an avid music lover and had a compassionate heart for animals.

LANETT -- Mr. Carle Sheppard, 85, of Lanett died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home.
Funeral services were scheduled Friday, Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Lanett First Baptist Church with Dr. Hugh Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in LaFayette City Cemetery.
Mr. Sheppard is survived by his wife, Helen Andrews Sheppard; one daughter, Margaret (Tom) McNaron of Anniston, Ala.; one son, Richard (Sue) Sheppard of LaFayette; three grandchildren, Brandon Sheppard, Stephen Sheppard and Benjamin McNaron; and one great-grandchild, Blake Sheppard.
Born July 22, 1919, Mr. Sheppard was the son the late of Maude Newman Sheppard and Abe Sheppard. He was an active member of Lanett First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Mr. Sheppard was a former member of the Lanett City School Board, the American Legion and the Lanett Kiwanis Club. He was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Army. He was the owner and operator of Sheppard Insurance and Realty Company in Lanett.

Mr. Strickland is survived by three sisters, Karene (Jimmy) Story of Lanett, Mary P. Holloway of LaFayette and Lorene Strickland of Valley; and a special niece, Sharil Carwell of Valley.
Mr. Strickland was born June 7, 1936 in Tallapoosa County. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in LaFayette.
