Dorothy Elizabeth Overton Willman
Services for Dorothy Elizabeth Overton Willman, 75, were at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Margaret Northen officiating. Burial was in Jacksonville City Cemetery, with K. L. Brown Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Willman died Dec. 10 at Jacksonville Hospital.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Leon D. Willman of Jacksonville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan and Harold O’Bryant of Boone, N. C., and Ann Elizabeth Welch of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Erin O’Bryant and Caite O’Bryant; a niece and two nephews.
Pallbearers were elders of First Presbyterian Church. Honorary pallbearers were members of Gideons International.
Mrs. Willman was born in Tuscaloosa and spent her childhood in the Kaulton community. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama and was one of the first female members of the Million Dollar Band. She taught music at public schools in Tuscaloosa and was a professor of music at Jacksonville State University.
She was a member of Delta Omicron, a music honorary, and First Presbyterian Church. She was director of the children’s choir and sponsor of Westminster Fellowship, a college group of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed folk music.

Carlene Wood
Memorial services for Carlene Wood, 70, will be held at a later date at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory.
Mrs. Wood died Thursday at her home.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Joe Wood of Jacksonville; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and David Wright of Metamora, Mich.; her mother, Glennie Funck of LaGrange, Ga.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Glenn and Gwen Funck, Monie and Carol Funck and Don Funck, all of Clarkston, Mich., and Ken and Jay Funck of LaGrange; and two grandchildren, Phillip David Wright and Christopher Joel Wright.
Mrs. Wood was a native of Missouri and had lived in Auburn Hills, Mich., for 52 years. A resident of Jacksonville for two years, she was the owner of Carlene’s Beauty Salon. She was preceded in death by her father, George Funck.

Lt. Col. (ret.) George E. "Gene" Wood
Lt. Col. (ret.) George E. “Gene” Wood, 78, a longtime resident of Jacksonville, died Thurs-day at the Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation Center. Services were Sunday at K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel. Burial was at the City Cemetery
with full military honors. Rev. Bert Breland of the First Baptist Church officiated.
Col. Wood was born and reared in Roanoke, the son of John and Lola Wood.
He graduated from Handley High School in 1943 and joined the U.S. Army shortly thereafter.
He served in Europe during World War II. After his three-year enlistment ended, he attended Jacksonville State Teachers College on the G.I. Bill, receiving his bachelor’s degree in secondary education/physical education in 1949. He was a member of the undefeated/untied Gamecock football team of 1947.
Col. Wood rejoined the Army in 1950 and served until 1971, retiring with 28 years of accumulated service. During his second stint in the military, he was stationed in Korea, Japan, Germany, France, Vietnam (twice), as well as various Army bases in the United States.
He received 21 medals/commendations (including the Legion of Merit, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Master Parachutists Badge) and nine overseas bars.
After retiring from the Army, Col. Wood became a probation/parole officer for the state. In 1977, he was named Supervisor of the Year by the State Board of Pardons and Paroles and in 1979 received the Fred Bryant Award from the Alabama Council on Crime and Delinquency. He retired in 1986 after 15 years of service.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he earned a master’s degree in personnel counseling in 1974 and an MPA with a concentration in criminal justice in 1975, both from Jacksonville State University. He was a lifetime member of the JSU Alumni Association. In 1992, he was named JSU Alumnus of the Year.
After retiring as a probation/parole officer, he was able to spend more time in service to the community.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the First United Methodist Church, the Council on Crime and Delinquency, the Alabama Peace Officers Association, the Fraternal Order of Police (Lodge No. 36), F&AM of Alabama (Lodge No. 443), Scottish Rite Freemason (32nd degree), Zamora Temple (Birmingham), and the Vulcan Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association.
Col. Wood is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sara Sutley Wood of Jacksonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Carol Wood of Jacksonville and Randy and Gayle Wood of Calhoun County; a sister, Lee Talley of Roanoke; and several generations of nieces and nephews.

Brown
DALLAS, TEXAS
Services with military honors for former Anniston City Schools Superintendent and former Alabama State Superintendent of Education Dr. LeRoy Brown, 82, of Texas will be today at 2 p.m. at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery
with Dr. George Davis officiating and North Dallas Funeral Home of Farmers Branch, Texas, in charge.
Dr. Brown died Monday at Lifecare Hospital in Dallas.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Jean Burgess Brown; a daughter and her husband, Elisabeth Johanna and Josef Halamka of Panama City, Fla.; three sons, Dr. John LeRoy Brown and his wife, Dr. Ofelia Brown of Indian Wells, Calif., James Lee Brown of Dallas, and Jeseph Lynden Brown and his wife, Noreen Jean Brown, of Frisco, Texas; and a granddaughter, Jeanie Lee Brown.
Dr. Brown, a Cleburne County native, retired from education with 47 years service. He served as Anniston City Schools superintendent from 1956 to 1964, when he accepted the post as president of the then-new Birmingham-Jefferson County Junior College. He later served four years as state superintendent of education, ending in 1975. His earlier career included service as a classroom teacher and superintendent of the Cleburne County schools. He resigned the post in 1942 to join the Army, and served as military mayor of two cities in Okinawa, then served as superintendent of city schools in Seoul, Korea during U.S. occupancy in 1945 and 1946. He was the recipient of many honors and awards, including The Freedom’s Foundation Award “for bringing about a better understanding of the American Way of Life.”

Services for Samuel Hall Brown of Ohatchee will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-9 tonight.
Mr. Brown died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta.
Harrell
OXFORD
Services for Charles A. Harrell, 62, of Oxford will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Anniston with Rev. Jim Barkley officiating. Burial will be in Delta Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-8 tonight.
Mr. Harrell died Tuesday at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
Survivors include his wife, Eura Harrell of Red Bay; two daughters and their husbands, Dina and Shane Short of Delta, and Trina and Scott Pettus of Anniston; a sister, Carolyn Beck of Wellington; a brother, Paul Harrell of Slocomb; a grandson, Cole Short; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Derek Frazier, Jerry Jones, Jay Prince, Troy Barnes, Paul David West, Rusty Harrell, David Johnson and Tony Johnson.
Mr. Harrell, a Slocomb native, was Methodist. He served in the Army and was a self-employed unfinished furniture salesman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer and Sybil Harrell.
O’Hara
DETROIT
Services for Charles O’Hara, 57, of Detroit, formerly of Heflin, will be announced by Anniston Funeral Service.
Mr. O’Hara died Tuesday at his home.
Robinson
OXFORD
Services for Ruby J. Robinson, 68, of Oxford will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford with Rev. Ralph Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-9 tonight.
Mrs. Robinson died Tuesday at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Dempsey of Dallas, Ga., Donna Hollingsworth of Anniston, and Deb Robinson of Oxford; her ex-husband, Hollis Robinson; two sisters, Shirley Laymon and Ann Benefield, both of Anniston; two brothers, Billy Laymon and William Laymon, both of Anniston; and four grandchildren, Angela Dempsey, Shane Dempsey, Brittney Robinson and Brett Hollingsworth.
Honorary pallbearers will be residents of Oxford House.
Mrs. Robinson was a Calhoun County resident most of her life. She was a member of Sunny Eve Baptist Church. She retired from Anniston Sportswear. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wakefield Laymon and Mary Collins Laymon.
Shelton

Services for Jack L. Shelton, 57, of Graham will be today at 2 p.m. CST at Gold Ridge Baptist Church with Revs. Gary Stewart and Bobby Garner officiating. Burial will be in Cleburne County Memory Gardens in Ranburne with Rainwater & West Funeral Home, Inc. of Bowdon, Ga. in charge.
Mr. Shelton died Monday at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Charleen McManus Shelton; two sons, Lee Shelton and Matt Shelton, both of Woodland; a daughter and her husband, Amanda and Roy Aldridge of Bowdon; four brothers, Bill Shelton, John Shelton, R.J. Shelton and Robert Shelton, all of Heflin; two sisters, Louise Turner and Betty Whiten, both of Bowdon; and three grandchildren, Derek Shelton, Noah Morgan and Jessica Shelton.
Pallbearers will be Charles Glenn, Leroy Parmer, Murl Williams, Vernon Lipham, Couch Whitley, Anthony Daniel, Cleve Pace and John Bain.
Mr. Shelton, a Cleburne County native, served in the Army National Guard for more than eight years. He was a poultry farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, James “Jim” and Lela Willingham Shelton; and two brothers, Ralph Shelton and Jimmy Shelton.
Throgmorton
ALEXANDRIA
Services for Frederick M. Throgmorton, 57, of Alexandria will be announced by Anniston Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Throgmorton died Monday at the Veteran’s Hospital in Birmingham.
