Funeral services for Nellie Pierce, 84, of Docena will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Gardendale Chapel, with Burial in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Gardendale Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pierce died Sunday, April 4. She was a member of Minor Church of God in Docena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Pierce; and her parents, Joe and Julie Mallard.

Survivors include three daughters, Annette (Doug) Taylor and Mary (Bobby) Cooksey, both of Hanceville, and Patsy (Doug) Earnest of Vinemont; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Dwight White

Funeral services for Kenneth Dwight White, 64, of Eva will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Tim Kenny officiating, with Burial in Enon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. White died Tuesday, April 6, at his residence. He was born Nov. 22, 1939, in Lincoln, Tenn. to Wright Fuller and Thelma Holmes White. He was a retired upholsterer, having worked in the business for 45 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Berlin and Howard White.

Survivors include a son, Derek Allen (Kathy) White of Eva; three daughters, Lisa (Ricky) Childers, Selana White of Eva and Kristy (Charles) Workman of Athens; and two sisters, Helen (Harvey) Hafer and Louise (Albert) Patterson of Cullman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Clarence Harris Ransom

Funeral services for Clarence Harris Ransom, 78, of Athens will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Limestone Chapel in Athens, Bill Irby officiating, with Burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Limestone Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ransom died Monday, April 5, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Cullman County. He was retired from Perfection Bedding Company in Birmingham and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of Hobbs Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Oaklene Tucker Ransom of Athens; a daughter, Phyllis Stewart of Alabaster; two sons, Davie Ransom and Tony Ransom, both of Athens; five grandchildren, Beth Smith, Daniel Ransom, Nathan Ransom, David Ransom and Natalie Stewart; three great-grandchildren, Noah Smith, Breanna Ransom and Alex Ransom; and a sister, Moveline Higdon of Cullman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Howard Powe

Funeral services for James Howard Powe, 78, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Larry Brown officiating, with Burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Powe died Wednesday, April 7 at his residence. He was born June 7, 1925, in Cullman County to Edward and Katie Loyd Powe. He was a painter for U.S. Steel. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Frank, Edward H., Albert and Curtis Powe; and a sister, Mildred Mann.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Fuller Powe of Cullman; a son, James Dennis (Carol) Powe of Shelby County; five grandchildren, James Michael (Pamela) Powe, Brian Dennis (Alicia) Powe, Christina (Jimmy) Wright, Lorie (Jamey) McRee and Jennifer Denise Powe; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday.

Gary Ken Ratcliff

Funeral services for Gary Ken Ratcliff, 53, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, Leon Mauldin and Bob Waldron officiating, with Burial Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ratcliff died Thursday, April 8, in Hanceville. He was born in Jefferson County on March 13, 1951, to Orville and Ottriss Orton Ratcliff.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Henson Ratcliff of Hanceville; four daughters, Misti (Kevin) Brown, Miranda (Bobby) Johnson and Marcia (James) Sartin, all of Good Hope, and Magan (Scott) Junkin of Dothan; a son, Marcus Ratcliff of Hanceville; two sisters, Faye Buckelew of Sumiton and Mary Nellis Crapps of Florence; two brothers, Randall Ratcliff of Mt. Olive and Wade Ratcliff of Sumiton; and six grandchildren, Makena Brown, Noah Brown, Ashton Brodie Brown, Jasper Johnson, Drew Johnson and Sylus Sartin.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Brice Duckworth

Funeral services for Brice Duckworth, 78, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, Carol Freeman officiating, with Burial in Damascus Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Duckworth died Wednesday, April 7, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born March 15, 1926, in Mississippi to Newton Albert and Margaret Elizabeth Clark Duckworth. He was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eula Mae Duckworth; and two sons, Brice Edward Jr. and James Edward Duckworth.

Survivors include a son, David (Tammy) Duckworth; a daughter, Brenda (Gary) Bates; a sister, Fronie Wilbanks; six grandchildren, Chad Bates, Melody Steely, Shonda Lackey, David Duckworth, Keisha McDonald and Josey Duckworth; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosa Lee Mullins; and three nephews, Hershel Duckworth, J.D. Duckworth and Eddie Mullins.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

John Gilbert Cosper

Funeral services for John Gilbert Cosper, 75, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, John Richter Jr. officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cosper died Thursday, April 8, at Woodland Hospital. He was born Nov. 9, 1928, in Cullman to Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Nellie Webb Cosper. He was a welder retired from Inland Steel. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert B. Cosper; three brothers, Howard Cosper, Edward Priest and I.C. Priest; and two sisters, Elenor Screws and Pearne Bates.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl M. "Peggy" Pope Cosper; a son, John M. Cosper of New Albany, Miss.; a grandson, John M. Cosper Jr.; two brothers, Hershel Cosper and Jessie Cosper; three sisters, Helen Brock, Bessie Scott and Cathrine Tucker; one grandchild; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Friday.

Rev. William Hugh Compton Sr.

Funeral services for the Rev. William Hugh Compton Sr., 66, of Decatur, will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, at Falkville First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Doug Wells Jr. officiating, with Burial in the Falkville City Cemetery.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Compton died Friday, April 9, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born July 15, 1937, in Morgan County to John Olen and Ruth Lou Ella Evans Compton. He was a Methodist minister.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Compton of Huntsville and Greg Compton of Decatur; two daughters, Joanna Tucker of Decatur and Dianna Parker of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Tommy Compton of Cullman; three sisters, Kaye Bates of Falkville, Jackie Phillips of Athens and Anna Davidson of Birmingham; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Greg 'Tom' Horton

Funeral services for Greg "Tom" Horton, 70, of Ethridge, Tenn. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., with Burial in Lawrence County Memorial Gardens, Tenn.

Neal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Horton died Thursday, April 8, at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia, Tenn. He was born April 3, 1934, to Jess and Ophia D. Bowden Horton. He was retired from Maury of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife, Betty White Horton of Ethridge, Tenn.; his mother; two daughters, Kay (Robby) Collier of Texas and Jackie (Eddie) Caylor of New Mexico; a stepson, Randy White of Cullman; two granddaughters, Kayla Collier and Bailey Collier; two sisters; and three brothers.

Visitation was Friday.

Vonzelle Smith

Funeral services for Vonzelle Smith, 68, of Blountsville will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Antioch Baptist Church, Earnie Garnett, John Owen Garnett and Duwayne Kelley officiating, with Burial in Rock Springs Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith died Thursday, April 8, at her residence. She was born in Georgia to George C. and Nancy G. Cox Hudson. She was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by parents; a son, Enice G. Smith; and a daughter, Melinda C. Smith.

Survivors include her husband, Edmond Smith Jr. of Blountsville; a son, Jeffery Don (Patti) Smith of Blountsville; a daughter, Felicia Bayles of Decatur; a sister, Juanita Malpus of Holly Pond; a brother, Ronald Hudson of Blountsville; seven grandchildren, Jamie Smith, Chris Smith, Jeffery Smith, Carla Smith, Anthony Smith, Eddie Bayles and Nikki Bayles; and two great-grandchildren, Kallie Smith and Madison Morris.

Pallbearers will be Burl Drake, Jeffery L. Smith, Larry Smith, Chris Smith, Anthony Smith and Eddie Bayles.

Honorary pallbearers Jerry Hackney, Gene Benson, Jonathan Hunter and Alfred Handley.

Visitation from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Roberta Agnes Smith

Funeral services for Roberta Agnes Smith, 90, of Cullman will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, Howard Rodgers and Dudley Brock officiating, with Burial in Baldwin Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died Friday, April 9, at Cullman Long Term Care. She was born Jan. 7, 1914, in Cullman to R. C. and Eva Mae Crutchfield Calloway. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons, Robert C. Smith and Hobert Smith; four brothers, J.W. Calloway, Herbert Calloway, Raymond Calloway and Earl Calloway; and four sisters, Ottomese Griffin, Helen Bone, Magdalene England and Margaret Hill.

Survivors include two sons, Aubry C. (Arvie Lee ) Smith and Buddy (Sharon) Smith, both of Cullman; four brothers, Clarence (Polly) Calloway of Georgia, Lester (M.E.) Calloway of Florida, Chester Calloway of Texas and Elwin (Jane) Calloway of Wetumpka; two sisters, Elizabeth (J.P.) Denson of Cullman and Bobby (Joe) Shults; and two granddaughters, Shanna Smith and C.J. Smith.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lula Mae Uptagrafft

Graveside services for Lula Mae Uptagrafft, 75, of Birmingham, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, at Good Hope Cemetery, Randy Owens officiating.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs Uptagrafft died Friday, April 9, at Birmingham East Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 18, 1928, to Louis Robert and Gertie Wainwright Jones. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Central Church of Christ in Saraland, and she attended East Cullman Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include four sons, Earl (Patti) Uptagrafft of Chickasaw, John Uptagrafft of Birmingham, George (Susan) Uptagrafft of Valdosta, Ga., and Steve Uptagrafft of Cullman; one daughter, Katherine Bailey of Birmingham; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Uptagrafft of Elberta; her mother, Gertie Wainwright of Baldwin County; two sisters, Margaret Vickery of Baldwin County and Anna Beckman of Cullman; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Vera Mae Denton

Funeral services for Vera Mae Denton, 82, of Addison, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, at Friendship Baptist Church at Upshaw, the Rev. Glenn Woods officiating, with Burial at the adjoining cemetery.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Denton died Saturday, April 10, at Lakeland Community Hospital in Haleyville. She was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Lawrence County, to Rubin and Viola Bell Morgan. She taught school for 38 years at Upshaw and Addison elementaries. She was a member of Pine Grove Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clem Denton.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
