Daniel Morris

Funeral services for Daniel Morris, 73, of Northport will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at Heritage Funeral Chapel, Dr. Ervin W. Cook officiating, with Burial in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.

Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Morris died Saturday, Sept. 13 at Druid City Hospital. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean War. He was past president of Alabama Refrigeration Service Engineers Society, instructor of HVAC at Shelton State for over 28 years, past commissioner of YMCA little league baseball, deacon of Alberta Baptist Church, consultant for Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Alabama and was a graduate of Athens State College.

He was preceded in death by his parents, L.P. and Effie Morris.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel W. Morris; two sons, Danny W. Morris and Kenneth E. Morris, both of Tuscaloosa; a sister, Myrle Cole of Cullman; two brothers, R.M. Morris of Monroe, Ga. and Samuel Morris of Northport; and a granddaughter, Christa Morris.

Pallbearers will be S.T. "Sonny" Bunn Jr., Terry Bunn, Hal Franks, Aaron Houston, Larry Walker, James Pruitt, Bobby Ashcraft and Tom Peters.

Honorary pallbearers will be S.T. "Dooley" Bunn, the Ray Mullinex Family and employees of Mullinex Sheet Metal, Robert Walters, Victor Poole, Phil Poole, Bill Murray and family, Steve Kavanah and members of the University of Alabama Mechanical Engineering Department, the Alabama Chapter of RSES, past students of Shelton State HVAC, members of Alberta Baptist Church, Dale Christian, Brad Fanning, Jean Poe, Harold Willcut, nurses of the Coronary Care Unit, and all friends and family that stood by at the hospital.

Visitation was Monday.

Wynell Baker Haynes

Graveside services for Wynell Baker Haynes, 50, of Ramona, Calif., formerly of Cullman, will be at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at Demascus Baptist Church Cemetery.

Albertville Memorial Chapel is notifying arrangements.

Mrs. Haynes died Thursday, Sept. 4 after a long illness with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Ruby Baker.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Dale Haynes; two sons, David Baker and Rodney (Nichole) Haynes; three granddaughters, Kaitlin and Ashley Baker and Alexaus Haynes; six brothers, Ray (Gree) Baker, Don Baker, Bob (Ester) Baker, Buck (Pat) Baker, Erskine (Denise) Baker and Arther (Faynell) Baker; and three sisters, Faye (Doyle) Duffie, Carolyn (Dwight) Amos and Linda (Steve) Coots.

Jewell Mae Green

Funeral services for Jewell Mae Green, 91, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, the Rev. David McDonald officiating, with Burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Green died Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Woodland Village. She was born Sept. 23, 1911 in Arab. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James C. and Emma Tisabeth Hyatt Eudy.

Survivors include three sons, Tommy Ray Veal of Linvingston, Tenn., Bobby Joe Veal of Polk City, Fla. and Bruce Wayne Veal of Texas; a daughter, Lois Marie Minton of Port Orange, Fla.; and 21 grandchildren.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Rev. Norman R. 'Shorty' Smith

Funeral services for the Rev. Norman R. "Shorty" Smith, 65, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at Mt. Olive First Congregational Methodist Church, the Revs. Charles Dixon, Vernon Willis and Harold Widner officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Cullman-Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The Rev. Smith died Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Cullman Regional Medical Center and was under Hospice care. He was born in Cullman to Dewey Sampson and Myrtice L. Miller Smith on Nov. 28, 1937. He was a minister for 37 years. He pastored and helped organize several churches in Cullman and Blount counties and did pastoral work in Tennessee. He also did evangelistic work in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. He served the First Congregational Methodist Church in various official positions over the past several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Christine Smith, Agnes Latham and Evelena Kelley; and two brothers, Leon Smith and Eluard "Pete" Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Opal Smith; a son, Keith (Skeeter) Smith; a daughter, Detra (Paul) Monk; a brother, Harvel Smith; two sisters, Janell Teichmiller and Eloise Linton; and four grandchildren, Casey Smith, Cody Smith, Emily Smith and Austin Monk.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Cullman County in memory of the Rev. Smith.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Pruett, Jeff Denson, Edwin Dixon, Randy Daniel, Jerry Eddleman and Eddie Linton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, both at the church.

Richard Wilson McLaughlin

Funeral services for Richard Wilson McLaughlin, 63, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Tim Kinny officiating, with Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McLaughlin died Tuesday, Sept. 16 at his residence. He was born on June 23, 1940 in Akron, Ohio. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marlin McLaughlin.

Survivors include his wife, Karron Powell McLaughlin; his mother, Dorothy Wilson McLaughlin; three sons, Byron, Phil and Rick; a brother, Robert McLaughlin; a sister, Marlene Etheridge; a granddaughter, Danielle; and a grandson, Ryan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Life Care Hospice at 1208 Alabama Highway 157, Cullman, Ala. 35058.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Homer McGriff

Funeral services for Homer McGriff, 92, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at Holly Pond Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Millard Mann officiating, with Burial in Brooklyn Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McGriff died Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Woodland Medical Center. He was born Aug. 20, 1911 in Cullman County. He was a retired tile mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Sylvania Mitchell McGriff; and two sisters, Mae Estes and Vada Thomas.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lucille Burden McGriff of Cullman; and a daughter, Peggy McGriff Johnson of Madison.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday, both at the funeral home.

Sarah Eloise Cook

Funeral services for Sarah Eloise Cook, 82, of Vestavia Hills will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at Lystra Baptist Church in Baileyton, Elder Guy Hunt and the Rev. Mike Rester officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cook died Monday, Sept. 15 at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair in Birmingham. She was born May 24, 1921 in Birmingham to Walter Sidney and Olive Mae Culver Jernigan. She was employed at Steel City Oldsmobile in Birmingham for 27 years. She was a life-long Baptist and an active member of Lystra Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She and her husband were involved in the trucking business and cattle farming.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ocie M. Cook Sr.; and her parents.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Floyd Thompson; a son, Ocie M. Jr. (Brandi) Cook, all of Vestavia Hills; and a sister, Ruby Ragland of Falls Church, Va..

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lystra Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

Pallbearers will be her nephews: Sidney Green, Tim Green and Craig Jackson, all of Birmingham, Taylor Bolton of Overland Park, Kan., and David Wilson of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and special friends, Bobby Murphy of Falkville, Ellis Williams of Lebanon, Tenn. and John "Buck" Whitten of Birmingham.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Marie Holmes Woodall

Funeral services for Marie Holmes Woodall, 78, of Eva will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, the Revs. Tim McCormick and James Williams officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Woodall died Wednesday, Sept. 17 at her residence. She was born Feb. 1, 1925 in Jefferson County to George and Agnes Farrell Webb. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include three sons, W.T. Holmes, James G. Holmes and George Holmes, all of Eva; a daughter, Gail McCormick of Hartselle; three stepdaughters, Athelia Gibbs and Joyce Whipple, both of Eva, and Janice Godson of Denver, Colo.; her mother, Agnes Webb of Falkville; a brother, Wallace Webb of Hartselle; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Erby Dean Ashley

Funeral services for Erby Dean Ashley, 46, of Jasper will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Kenny Freeman officiating, with Burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ashley died Wednesday, Sept. 17 at UAB Hospital. He was born Jan. 22, 1957 in Marshall County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Erby Joe and Annie Bearden Ashley; and his brother, Roy Neal Ashley.

Survivors include six sisters, Jo Anne (Calvin) Skidmore of Texas, Brenda Woollen of Haleyville, Gail Shoemaker of Hanceville, Rita Colvin of Texas, Diane (Kenneth) Panell and Lesha (Eddie) Brockman; five nieces; and six nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Glenn L. Calhoun

Funeral services for Glenn L. Calhoun, 84, of Huffman will be at noon Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, with Burial in Flint Creek Cemetery.

Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Calhoun died Thursday, Sept. 18. He attended Conesville and Muscatine High Schools and Muscatine Junior College. He earned a law degree from the Atlanta School of Law. He served in the Army Air Corps's 24th Combat Mapping Squadron in the India/Burma/China Theatre during World War II. He worked for Kent Feed and Grain in Iowa and Birmingham, and for the Veteran's Administration in Atlanta. He transferred to the Social Security Administration in Birmingham and retired after 30 years of government service. He was a member of VFW Post 3407 for many years and served as post commander and many other capacities.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles; and a sister, Florence.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Silena Alfano Calhoun; his daughter, Glenda Susan (Roland) Gay of Cullman; a son, Chuck (Cyndi) Calhoun of Graysville; two grandchildren, Stephen (Sonya) Whiting of Cullman and Mary (Drew) Heatherly of Roebuck; two great-grandchildren, Logan Andrew Heatherly and Seth Conner Whiting.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Odyssey Health Care, 2100B South Bridge Parkway, Ste. 250, Birmingham, Ala. 35209.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lena Edna Johns Screws

Funeral services for Lena Edna Johns Screws, 96, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at Moss-Service Chapel, Perry Knight and Buford Haynes officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Screws died Friday, Sept. 19 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 6, 1907 in Alabama to John Madison and Martha Roxie Ann Sawyer Persall. She was a farmer.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Leonard Johns and Clifford Screws; three brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include special caregivers, Charlene and Dennis Jordan; two sisters, Pearl Taylor and Thelma Jordan; and a brother, Mancel Persall.

Visitation will be at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jewell D. Herfurth

Funeral services for Jewell D. Herfurth, 89, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at Moss-Service Chapel, Bob Kurtz officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Herfurth died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 12, 1914 to James and Nora Lee Foust Jetton. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Clifford A. Herfurth; two daughters, Margaret Dobbins of Cullman and Judy (Richard) Giles of Holland, Mich.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Friday.
