Jazyiah Zitamorrah Trayvelle Morris

Jazyiah Zitamorrah Trayvelle Morris of Wagarville died Jan. 24, 2007 at an area hospital at the age of four months.

Survivors include her mother, Tracie Koen of Wagarville; father, Jorvelle Morris of Jackson; sister, Laiken Koen of Wagarville; grandparents, Tina and Neil Hays of Wagarville, Lamar Koen and Michelle Stain, both of Frankville, Annet Morris of Jackson and Sam Fail of Grove Hill.

The funeral service, Jan. 27, was at the New Hope Methodist Church in Frankville with the Rev. Nadine Brewster Walters officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.

Earnest Linton

Earnest "Pinkey" Linton, a longtime resident of Jackson, died Jan. 23, 2007 in a hospital in Gainesville, Fla. at the age of 60. Preceded in death by his father, James O. Linton Sr., he was a native of Canton, Miss. Linton was employed with Allied Paper Co. in Jackson before moving to Michigan where he worked for Champion International Paper Co. He returned to Jackson in 1997 to work for the Clarke County Commission and the Road and Bridge Department. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Neugent Linton of Jackson; mother, Mollie Linton of Carthage, Miss.; daughter, Lindsey Garza of Jackson; brother, Joey Linton of Jackson; two grandchildren, Caleb Garza and Zachary Dove, both of Jackson; aunt, Hilda Pennington of Carthage and godchild, Jonathan Skipper of Jackson.

A memorial service was conducted Jan. 27 at the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson with the Rev. Daniel Berry officiating and Direct Cremations, Inc. of Gainesville directing. A eulogy was presented by Renee Smith and a poem by Becky Neugent. Serving in honorary capacity were co-workers with the Clarke County Road and Bridge Department.

Alonzo Jackson Sr.

Alonzo "Big Hoss" Jackson Sr., 71, a native of Barlow Bend and a resident of Jackson, died Jan. 25, 2007 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital. He was a member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Barlow Bend where he served on the Usher Board.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Sanders Jackson of Barlow Bend; 11 daughters, Sarah (Oneal) Gibby, Annie Lee Jackson, Angela Denise Jackson and Wendy Diane Jackson, all of Barlow Bend, Betty Hunt of Mobile, Ida Mae Jackson of Fayetteville, N.C., Voncile (Kenneth) Dickinson and Clarietta Hixon, all of Jackson, Mischell (Robert) Williams of Atlanta, Ga. and Sharanda Wright and Shandra Wright, both of Manila; nine sons, BeWright Smith and Alonzo (Edna) Jackson Jr., all of Foley, Clayton Clifford McCants of Mobile, Jimmie (Tanja) Jackson and Travis Earl Jackson, all of Fayetteville, Nathaniel (Diana) Jackson of Alma, Clarence (Lisa) Peoples of Carlton, Karl (Norma) Peoples of Grove Hill and Christopher (Shay) Peoples of Atlanta; three brothers, Elbert (Rebecca) Jackson of Morvin, Lewis (Ruby) Jackson and Willie (Mattie) Jackson, all of Barlow Bend; 37 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Feb. 1 (today) at 1 p.m. at Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Barlow Bend. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery in Barlow Bend with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Odessa Smith Griffin

Odessa Smith Griffin, 85, a native of Axis and resident of Calvert, died Jan. 28, 2007 at Cogburn Nursing Facility in Mobile. A homemaker and member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Calvert, she served as a missionary worker and church musician for many years, before she began ministry work with her husband. A member of the choir, she served as church musician at St. Paul Baptist Church in McIntosh for 47 years and the New Canaan Baptist Church in Choctaw Bluff for 45 years. She also served on the Union Missionary District Association as a musician. She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Peter and Mary Smith, three sons, Willie Griffin Jr., Gardner Griffin and Peter Griffin.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, the Rev. Willie Griffin of Calvert; three sons, Calvin (Dorothy) Griffin of Wagarville, Marion (Hazel) Griffin of Foley and John (Beverly) Griffin of Calvert; five daughters, Rosie (the Rev. Dave) Adams of McIntosh, Irma (Freddie) Bettis of Malcolm, Alice (Henry) Gaines and Dorothy Griffin, all of Calvert and Debra Akhemie of Montgomery; five sisters, Victoria Moss, Louvenia Williams, Cora Stallworth and Ruth Perryman, all of Mobile and Delores Cann of Hempstead, N.Y.; a brother, Nathaniel Smith of Mobile; 32 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Saturday, Feb. 3, 11 a.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church in McIntosh with the Rev. Craig Westry, pastor and the Rev. Allen Barnes, eulogist, officiating. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11. Burial will be in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Calvert with Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Marie DeWitt Coleman

Marie DeWitt Coleman, a native of Clarke County and a longtime resident of Jackson, died Feb. 1, 2007 at the Jackson Health Care Facility at the age of 83. She was affectionately known as "Ree" to her friends and family. A dedicated and loyal member of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson, she was an avid walker and an Auburn University and Atlanta Braves fan.

She is survived by two sons, Bob Coleman III of Fairhope and Danny Coleman of Leroy; five grandchildren, Dr. Scott (Robin) Coleman of Fairhope, Ashley (Michelle) Coleman of Tuscaloosa, Mary Kate Coleman of Mobile, Ginny Coleman and Golden Coleman, both of Jackson; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, and special niece, Jean Butts of Grove Hill.

The funeral service was Feb. 3 at the First United Methodist Church in Jackson. A private graveside ceremony was conducted in Thomasville with Lathan Funeral Home directing.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Jackson.

Ola Mae Grayson

Ola Mae Grayson, 86, died Jan. 29, 2007 at a health care facility in Grand Bay. She was a native and resident of Alma. A homemaker, she was a member of Perry's Chapel Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Max Calvin Grayson of Mobile; two sisters, Bernice Talbert of Ozark and Nevie Loleete Evans of Millry; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Feb. 3 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Interment was in the Perry's Chapel Cemetery.

Rance Powell Jr.

The funeral service for Rance Powell Jr. was conducted on Feb. 2, 11 a.m. in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Burial was in the Clearwater Cemetery.

Mr. Powell, a native of Wagarville and a resident of St. Stephens, died Jan. 31, 2007 at his residence at the age of 73. He was retired from Ciba Geigy Corp. and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by two sons, Channing (Tresa) Powell of St. Stephens and Rance "Bud" (Angie) Powell of Jackson; daughter, Jennifer Childs of Wagarville; brother, Robert R. Powell of Leroy; sister, Jean Blackmon of St. Stephens and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Ray Powell and Joel Powell.

Casandra Mae Rivers

Casandra Mae Rivers, 23, a native of Waynesboro, Miss. and a resident of Mt. Vernon, died Feb. 4, 2007 in an automobile accident. She was a homemaker and member of Light House of Praise Holiness Church in Mt. Vernon and a former member of Three Forks Baptist Church in Bigbee. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Audrey and W.T. Moss.

She is survived by her husband, David W. Rivers of Mt. Vernon; son, Braxton Sancer Rivers of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Macenzie Cheyanne Rivers of Mt. Vernon; brother, William Cody Carpenter of Northport; two sisters, Amber Coy Carpenter of Millry and Ashley Roberts of Northport; father and stepmother, Jerry "Coy" and Cathy Carpenter of Millry; mother, Carmen Moss of Chatom; grandparents, Mildred and Jerry Carpenter of Millry.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Feb. 8 (today), 11 a.m., at Three Forks Baptist Church in Bigbee. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

Mary Beck York

Mary Beck York, a homemaker and member of the First Pentecostal Church of Jackson, died Feb. 4, 2007 at a local hospital. She was 67. A native and resident of Jackson, she was preceded in death by her husband, Waymond York and brother, Jimmy Beck.

Survivors include her mother, Nora Beck Overstreet of Salitpa; two daughters, Angela McIlwain of Salitpa and Tammy (Mark) Mitchell of Chatom; brother, Tony (Rhonda) Beck of Salitpa; three sisters, Christine (Franklin) Hayes of Satsuma, Sylvia (Bobby) Powell of Leroy and Shelia Powell of Salitpa; one granddaughter, Ericka Phelon of Bay Minette and one great-grandchild, Swayze Phelan of Bay Minette.

The funeral was Feb. 7 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. R.K. Rivers officiating. Burial was in the River Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Greg Hayes, Michael Bailey, Ricki Lindsey, Bert Pettis, David Snell, Troy Beck, Jeff Chason, Robert Hicks and Brent Gates.

Honorary pallbearers were Thurmon York, Melton DuBose, Mike York and Larry York.

Pearlie Mae Arnold Kennedy

Pearlie Mae Arnold Kennedy, 84, a native of Rockville and a resident of Jackson, died Feb. 1. 2007 at Kindred Nursing Home in Mobile. She was a homemaker and member of St. Union Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Arnold and Carrie Valentine Arnold.

She is survived by a son, Tommy (Agnes) Tate of Orlando, Fla.; six daughters, Linda Flowers and Johnnie Mae Brown, both of Panama City, Fla., Lee Helen Foreman of Mobile, Leola Kennedy, Dorothy Kennedy and Elizabeth Kennedy, all of Jackson; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Feb. 8 (today), 1 p.m. at St. Union Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson with the Rev. J.M. Howard, pastor and eulogist. Viewing will be one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Jackson with Andrews Funeral Home directing.
