John Douglas Dorman
John Douglas Dorman, a native of Washington County and resident of Millry, died in an automobile accident June 10, 2007 at the age of 38. He was a reserve deputy for the Washington County Sheriff's Department, a Mason and member of the Chatom Lodge, Local F.O.P., an election official for the Copeland box and millwright with Brown and Root. Dorman was a member of the Copeland Assembly of God Church in Copeland.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Dorman of Copeland; two sons, Nickolas Newell and Hunter Newell, both of Copeland; two daughters, Raven Dorman and Hannah Dorman, both of Copeland; mother, Sherry Lolley of Tibbie; stepfather, Ralph Lolley of Tibbie; sister, Teresa Kittrell of State Line, Miss.; and grandmother, Vera Foster of Wagarville.
Services were June 13 at the Copeland Assembly of God Church in Copeland with interment in the New Bethel Cemetery
in Millry under the direction of Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom.
Stephanie Ann Foster
Stephanie Ann Foster, 32, died June 10, 2007 in an automobile accident. She was a native of Washington County and a resident of Millry where she was a member of the Copeland Church of God. Mrs. Foster was a member of the Chatom Woman's Club, worked with the Washington County Junior Miss Program, an American Red Cross volunteer, a volunteer worker with her daughter Mollie at the Washington County Nursing Home and a lab technician for the Washington County Infirmary in Chatom. She was predeceased by her grandparents Ulmer and Ruth Cooper.
She is survived by her husband, Chris Foster of Millry; son, Solomon Foster of Millry; daughter, Mollie Foster of Millry; mother, Barbara Hall of Millry; father, Wendell Hall of Millry; two brothers, Roger Hall of Birmingham and Michael Hall of Millry.
Funeral services are June 14 (today), 11 a.m. at the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom. Internment will be at Ebenezer Methodist Cemetery
in Wagarville.
Pallbearers are Tripp Doggett, Stephen Scoggin, Craig Hall, Brian Brown, Walt Nader and Chase Black. Honorary pallbearers are Naomi Black, Dr. Steve Donald, Drew Reynolds, Tony Cooley, Billy Joe Odom and Anita Donald.
Ernestine Beck Thomas
Ernestine Beck Thomas, a native of Clarke County and resident of Montgomery, died at her residence June 6, 2007 at the age of 78. She was a retired school bus driver for the Montgomery County School Board and a member of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Prattville.
Survivors include a brother, A.G. Beck of Jackson; and two sisters, Melrose Coleman of Walker Springs and Myrtle Willoughby of Grove Hill.
Funeral services were June 8 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Interment was in the Stave Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Loretta Lavetta Hill
Loretta Lavetta Hill, 59, a native of Grove Hill and a resident of East Chicago, Ill., died June 7, 2007 at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago. She was educated in the Clarke County School System and graduated from Wilson Hall High School in 1968. Hill received her master's degree in management in 1979 from Calumet College in Chicago. She was employed with Standard Bank & Trust in East Chicago as manager of personal loans. A member of St. Peter Baptist Church in Allen, upon moving to Chicago she became a member and served as church clerk at Peace Baptist Church.
Survivors include five sisters, Mary Lou Hill of East Chicago, Shirley (Arthur) Davis and Chinella Hill, both of Grove Hill, Annie Pearl Armstead of Jackson and Argirtha (Bill) Bradley of Joliet, Ill.; three brothers, Johnny (Jean) Hill of Grove Hill, Lawain (Belissa) Hill of Montgomery and Curtis Davis of Joliet; aunt, Nettie Hill of Grove Hill; three uncles, Bobby Hill of San Antonio, Texas, Nathaniel Hill of Mobile and Eddie Lee Hill of Gosport; and three godsons, Cedric Hill of Arlington, Texas, D'Cameron Dunigan of Grove Hill and Maurice Burns of Cleveland, Ohio.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 16, 1 p.m. at St. Peter Baptist Church with the Rev. Matthew Davis, pastor. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service and following the eulogy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson.
Sgt. Nicholas VanKeith Pugh
Sgt. Nicholas VanKeith Pugh, age 27, a native of Grove Hill and a resident of Montgomery, died June 10, 2007 in Tuscaloosa as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was a lifelong member of Pine Chapel No. 1 Missionary Baptist Church of Grove Hill and sang in the Inspirational Divine Mass Choir and the BC Chorus. He attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham and was a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Pugh served with the Army National Guard for seven years, serving two tours of overseas duty, 2003-2004 and 2005-2006, in Kuwait and Iraq. Coordinating the transporting of Army equipment, he received numerous decorations attaining the rank of E5. A U.S. Army recruiter, he served first in Tuscaloosa, then Montgomery and currently was located in Birmingham.
Survivors include his parents Ronnie and Brenda A. Pugh of Jackson; two sisters, Veronica (Dedric) Pugh Dixon of Jackson and Crystal N. Pugh of Tuscaloosa; two brothers, Ozzie S. Pugh of Tuscaloosa and Ronnie Pugh Jr. of Huntsville; daughter, Ieisha Nichole Merida of Frankville; and grandmother, Claudia Roper of Grove Hill.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 15, 11 a.m. at Berry's Chapel AME Zion Church in Winn with the Rev. Sherman Lewis, pastor and the Rev. Linda F. Hollinger, eulogist and aunt of the deceased. Viewing is today, June 14, 6- 8 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Friday, 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service. Full military rites will be at the graveside with burial in Berry's Chapel Cemetery, directed by Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson.
Zeola Davis Wheat
Zeola Davis Wheat, 70, a native and resident of McIntosh, died June 8, 2007 at Providence Hospital in Mobile. She retired from Searcy Hospital in the Food Service Department and was a member of Lang's Chapel AME Zion Church of McIntosh.
Included in the survivors are son, Alonzo Wheat Jr., Gulfport, Miss.; daughter, Regina (Donnie) Young of McIntosh; three brothers, Izell (Sandra) Davis and Bryant (Beatrice) Davis Jr., both of Calvert and Lewis Davis of Cleveland, Ohio; nine sisters, Aslean (Robert) Johnson, Betty (Tobe) Marks, Clara (Johnny) Dunning and Mary (the Rev. Charlie J.) White, all of Mt. Vernon and Delia West, Doris (Joe L.) Johnson, Sadie (Wallace) Reed and Ida (Carlos) Cox, all of Calvert and Mae Etta (John) Roper of Toddtown; three grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 16, 2 p.m. at Lang's Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Hamilton, pastor and eulogist. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery
in McIntosh with arrangements by Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson.
John Henry Woodard
John Henry Woodard, a Washington County resident, died at the Washington County Infirmary of Chatom on June 6, 2006 at the age of 82. He was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Army where he received the Medal of Honor. Mr. Woodard was a member of the Cooper Lewis C.M.E. Church of Chatom where he served as chairman of the trustee board and the outreach ministry.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bernice Dixon Woodard of Chatom; three daughters, Delois Johnson and Juanita Wimbley, both of Chatom and Janet Woodard of Enterprise; one son, the Rev. Willie (Helen) Woodard of Jackson; brother, Ned (Sallie) Woodard of Satsuma; and mother in-law, Mittie Dixon of Stateline, Miss.
Services were held June 8 from the Cooper Lewis C.M.E. Church. Interment was in the Hill Crest Cemetery
of Chatom with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
Franklin McCray Beech
Franklin McCray Beech, died at the age of 71 at his home in Hobson on June 5, 2007. A native of Washington County, he was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Services were conducted June 8 at Fairhope Baptist Church in Chatom with interment in the church cemetery. Brother Gerald M. Beech officiated with St. Stephens Funeral Home of St. Stephens directing.
Surviving him are his wife, Mary Faye Stewart Beech of Hobson; mother, Gertrude Baxter Beech of Chatom; four sons, William Nolan of Japan, Carleton Beech and Randall Beech, both of Mobile and Frank "Mac" Beech Jr. of Virginia; 10 daughters, Sheryl Cartee, Karen Sandridge, Beva Hamblin, Jana Beech and Becky Dunlap, all of Mobile, Melissa Beech of Leroy, Joy Beech and Jennifer Hyde, both of St. Stephens, Jaclyn Klopf of Bay Minette and Frankie Beech of Chatom; seven brothers, James Beech, Grady Beech, Jerry Beech and Chuck Beech, all of Chatom, Arthur Beech of Wagarville, Jimmy Beech of Hillsboro, Texas and Wayne Beech of Saraland; five sisters, Edith Bell and Teresa Beech, both of Chatom, Janie Caldwell of Mobile, Marsha Givens of Seminole, Sissy Loper of Millry and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Harold Dean McInnis
Harold Dean McInnis, 73, formerly of Jackson and Tyler, Texas, died at his residence in Mobile May 21, 2007. Services were conducted at the Tyler Memorial Funeral Home chapel, May 29, with Dr. Mike Daniels officiating.
Burial was in the Tyler Memorial Park where his wife, Mattie Walker McInnis is interred. He retired from the Army, having served during the Korean Conflict, was a Red Cross volunteer and a member of MASS in Mobile. Mr. McInnis was a member of Cornerstone Metropolitan Church of Mobile. He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Huel and Rosa Lee B. McInnis; brothers, William White McInnis and Robert Wayne McInnis.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Byars of LaRue, Texas, RoseAnn Bentz of Longview, Texas and Tammy Vickery of Tyler; two sons, Edgar H. McInnis of Kansas and Mitchell D. McInnis of Tyler; brother, Hugh M. McInnis of Moss Point, Miss.; two sisters, Patsy McLendon of Millers Ferry and Roselyn Patton of Dickinson; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Leroy Jefferson Williams Jr.
Leroy Jefferson Williams Jr. died May 19, 2007. A native of St. Stephens and a resident of Huntsville, he was 55 years of age.
Williams received his early Christian education as a member of James Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in St. Stephens. He later joined the Governors Drive Church of God in Christ and later became a charter member of True Light. Mr. Williams drafted and designed the four-phase church/campus project. The church presently occupies a five acre, 30,000 sq. ft. complex that he initiated during his mid 30s. He served as chairman of the board of trustees, head of the deacon board and was superintendent of the local and district Sunday School departments.
He received his secondary education in the public school system of Washington County and then graduated from Alabama A&M University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in industrial education technology. He pledged the Greek fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma.
Serving the United States Army as a civil servant for more than 33 years, he worked as a MIRADCOM engineering technician and research technician in the Propulsion Laboratory at the U.S. Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal. The Army approved a number of his patents and recognized him for his invention of a new type of solid propellant. Mr. Williams later changed careers and worked as a contract specialist/contracting officer for the U.S. MICOM and later, the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command where he was promoted to division chief for the Missile and Air Defense/TAC Division.
He was the owner of Elegant Fashions One-Stop Formal Wear in Huntsville for more than 13 years.
Williams was preceded in death by his mother, Essie B. Woodyard Williams. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Downing Williams of Huntsville; one son, Ellery LaRoy (Yana) Williams of Huntsville; three daughters, Hope Denise (Dan) Bradley, Erin Christina Williams and Heather Renae Williams, all of Harvest; his father, Leroy J. Williams Sr. of St. Stephens; four brothers, Alfred J. (Nancy) Williams of Madison, Clyde W. Williams of Colorado Springs, Colo., James C. (Monica) Williams of Huntsville and Michael T. (Sandra) Williams of Greenville, S.C.; three sisters, Tommi Carol (Richard) Coates of St. Stephens, Clara J. (Jeff) Foster of Bolingbrook, Ill. and Elizabeth A. (Thomas) Fox of Jackson; one adopted sister, Gussie W. Powe (cousin) of Inglewood, Calif.; two grandchildren, Cristin and Cameron and a godchild, Brandon C. Williams, all of Huntsville and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were May 25 at True Light Church of God in Christ in Huntsville with Pastor Dr. Terrell Harris Jr. officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Gardens.
