Mary Adeline Chapman

Mary Adeline Chapman, 81, a native of Grove Hill and a resident of the Winn community, of Jackson died June 14, 2007 at Medical Center East in Birmingham. She is preceded in death by her parents Ceasor Mitchell Sr. and Della Cox Mitchell, and her husband, J.D. Chapman Sr. Mrs. Chapman was retired from Searcy Hospital. She confessed Christ at Pine Chapel No. 1 Baptist Church of Grove Hill, later affiliated with AOH Church of God in Winn and St. Paul Church of God Pentecostal in Jackson.

Survivors include two sons, Elder Dayton (Lillie) Chapman of Birmingham and J.D. (Mona) Chapman of Mobile; five sisters, Gladys Holloway, Willodean Finch, Willie Mae Daniels, Nonie (Louis) Robinson, all of Grove Hill and Bardee Davis of Wilmington, N.C.; two brothers, Jamie Mitchell of Mt. Vernon and Ceasor (Zeola) Mitchell of Cleveland, Ohio; sister-in-law, Jeanette Mitchell of Hammond, La.; aunt, Alma Cox of Grove Hill; devoted friends, the Rev. Willie Goodman and family, Hazel Butler, Onnie Mae Cunningham, Brenda Pugh, Arcola Pugh and Maggie Chapman; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 22, 11 a.m. at Pine Chapel No. 1 Baptist Church with the Rev. Eligha Scott, pastor and Elder Clifford Mitchell, eulogist, officiating. Viewing will be today (Thursday), 2-6 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home. A second viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be in the Chapman Family Cemetery in Winn.

Julia Granade Van Hoose

Julia Adolyn Granade Van Hoose, a homemaker and resident of McIntosh, died June 16, 2007 at Jackson Health Care in Jackson at the age of 84.

She is survived by her husband, Leigh Van Hoose of McIntosh; son, Leigh (Sue) Van Hoose Jr. of Slidell, La.; two daughters, Virginia (Marc) Kyzar of Jackson and Martha (Bill) Rice of Natchez, Miss.; brothers, Gaines Granade of Macon, Ga., Ben Granade, and Napp Granade, both of Warner Robbins, Ga.; two sisters, Nell Strong of Jackson and Elizabeth Harwell of Birmingham; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The graveside service was conducted June 18 at Hooks Cemetery in Sunflower with the Rev. Jim Dufriend officiating and St. Stephens Funeral Home of St. Stephens directing. Pallbearers were Van Sims, Russ Sims, Paul Van Hoose, Joey Ashley, Marc Kyzar and Bill Rice.

Lillie Ferrell

Lillie Ferrell, 78, a native of Bladon Springs and resident of Chatom, died June 17, 2007 at Washington County Infirmary Hospital in Chatom. She was a member of the Cooper Lewis C.M.E. Church of Chatom where she served as a trustee, was a member of the Missionary Society and a former choir president.

She is survived by six daughters, Joann (Travis) Wilson of Citronelle, Marie Jones of Thomaston, Ga., Josephine (Rev. Eddie) Marzett, Rose (Willie) McKinnis and Dorothy (Willie) Caves, all of Chatom and Mammie (Clarence) Lucious of Vinegar Bend; two sons, George (Theda) Rhodes of Chatom and Will (Tiffany) Rhodes of Japan; four stepsons, Wesley (Diane) Smith of Chatom, David (Cynthia) Ferrell of Citronelle, Amos Ferrell and Andrew Ferrell, both of California; three sisters, Willie Henderson of Mobile, Ella M. Williams of Prichard, Aliola (James) Murphy of Whistler; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Viewing will be Saturday, June 23, 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. at the Cooper Lewis C.M.E. Church of Chatom. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery of Chatom directed by Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson.

Jon Britton Castleberry

Jon Britton Castleberry, infant twin son of Bart and Heather Castleberry of Wetumpka died June 7, 2007. He was preceded in death by his twin sister Brenley Elizabeth Castleberry. He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Mickey and Joette Castleberry of Montgomery and Charles and Norma McIntyre of St. Stephens; great grandparents Ruth Bush of Montgomery, Adele Seibert of St Stephens, Leon and Rosalie McIntyre of Leroy; uncle and aunts, Brian and Amy Castleberry and Elizabeth McIntyre; and two cousins, Kaitlyn and Allison Castleberry.

Graveside services were June 11 at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, directed by Leak-Memory Chapel of Montgomery. Grandfather, "Poppy", Dr. Mickey Castleberry officiated.

Jackie Wayne Dameron

Jackie Wayne Dameron, 60, died June 25, 2007 at his residence in Whatley. Dameron was a native of Caretta, W. Va. He was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force, was a retired lay minister and owner and operator of First Quality Outlet, a clothing store in Grove Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Robinson Dameron of Whatley; his mother, Bertha Whitt Dameron of Kingsport, Tenn.; and two brothers, Jerry Dameron of Blountville, Tenn. and Aaron Dameron of Tazewell, Va.

Visitation will be Friday, June 29, from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. service at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill. The Rev. Chris Kynard will be officiating with Mr. Dameron's nephew, Ron Jackson, speaking. Interment will be in the Dacy Cemetery in Whatley. Pallbearers are Jeff Luker, Todd Overstreet, Myron Gregory, Shannon Finney, Kenny Jackson and David Dameron.

Albert Lee Mills

Albert Lee Mills, 50, died at an area hospital Sunday, June 24, 2007. He was a native of Mobile and a resident of Chatom. Mr. Mills was a member and Sunday School teacher at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, Laurel Hill, Fla., an electrician for Fridgid North and a naval veteran of the first Gulf War.

He is survived by his father and mother, Ferrell Mills and Willie Mills, respectively, both of Chatom; three sisters, Debra Keating of Arlington, Wash., and Cynthia Williams and Beverly Mills, both of Chatom; two brothers, Alan Mills of Anchorage, Alaska and Timothy Mark Mills of Anna, Ind.; grandmother, Freda Armistead Dillon of Saraland; two stepsons, Steven Rhyne of Indiana and Robbie Rhyne of Alaska; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services were June 26 at Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery in Covington County with the Rev. Mike McVay officiating. Arrangements were by Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom.

Atlean Williams Jackson

Atlean Williams Jackson, 48, a resident of Jackson, died at Mobile Infirmary Hospital June 21, 2007. She was a member of the Jackson A.O.H. Church of Jackson serving on the usher board and a member of the Usher Union, and was a choir and missionary society member. Mrs. Jackson was a graduate of Jackson High School Class of 1977.

Her survivors include her husband, Tommie Lee Jackson Jr.; two sons, Javares Jackson of Jackson and Tommie Jackson of Birmingham; four daughters, Avetta D. Williams, Jameshia Williams, Yasmine King, all of Jackson and Kimberly Jackson of Montgomery; father and mother, Allen Sr. and Ola B. Williams of Jackson; three sisters, Jean (Nathaniel) Jackson, Carolyn Jackson and Joann Washington, all of Jackson; three brothers, Allen (Vera) Williams Jr. and Kenneth (Mary Lee) Williams, both of Jackson, and Michael (Sharon) Taylor of Mobile; father and mother-in-law, the Rev. Tommie Sr. and Elizabeth Jackson of Jackson.

The funeral service was June 26 at Mount Olive No. 2 Baptist Church of Jackson with interment in the Scott Family Cemetery of Jackson. Arrangements were by Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson.

Charity Bell Jackson

Charity Bell Jackson, 82, a resident of Barlow Bend, died June 26, 2007 at Providence Hospital in Mobile. She was a member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church where she served in the Missionary Society and was a member of the L.D. Williams Pride, Order of the Eastern Star No. 730 of Barlow Bend.

She is survived by six daughters, Rosie Montgomery of Gainestown, Jestine (James) Clarke, Claudia (J.C.) Rocker, Ella McGaster and Bernice (John) People, all of Barlow Bend and Fannie (Michael) White of Alma; four sons, the Rev. King D. (Lucy) Jackson and Willie (Ethel) Jackson, both of Gainestown, Leroy (Teena) Jackson of Barlow Bend and Clayborn (Shirley) Jackson of Mobile; sister, Josephine Jackson of Barlow Bend; 46 grandchildren, 115 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday, July 3 at the Rocky Mount Baptist Church with the Rev. King D. Jackson officiating. Interment was in the Union Chapel Cemetery of Barlow Bend with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson directing

Edward "Tony" Anton

Edward "Tony" Anton died July 8, 2007 in an area hospital at the age of 93. A native of Exeter, Neb. and a resident of Jackson, he was a retired millwright and member of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson. Mr. Anton had the distinction of being one of the last surviving Mt. Rushmore drillers.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Fae Anton of Jackson; a son, Douglas Anton of Port Angeles, Wash.; stepson, Gerald Mendes; stepdaughter, Sherry Jones of Jackson; brother, Joseph Anton of Washington; two sisters, Alice Scherkenbach of San Diego, Calif. and Mae Murphy of Bremerton, Wash.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 13, 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Jackson. Arrangements are by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Flora Mae Lathan

Flora Mae Lathan, 85, was a native of Greene County, Miss. and a resident of Jackson. She died July 5, 2007 in a Clarke County health care facility. She was a homemaker and a member of Springbank Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Harold A. Lathan of Montgomery, and Douglas Lathan and James Lathan, both of Chatom; three daughters, Carol Lathan Goolsby and Judy Lathan Payne, both of Jackson and Maureen Lathan Henson of Chatom; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were July 7 at Springbank Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Smith officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Joseph Cris Newman Jr.

Joseph Cris Newman Jr., 81, died July 10, 2007 at his residence. He was a native of Phoebus, Va. and a resident of Whatley. A retired sheetmetal mechanic with the Civil Service, he served in the U.S. Air Force in WWII and in Korea, retiring as a Tech. Sgt. E6. Newman was a life member of VFW Post 5106 in Thomasville and the past post commander.

He is survived by his wife Carol N. Newman of Whatley; a son, Richard Newman of Titusville, Fla.; three stepsons, Mike Bartoszek of Killeen, Texas, Paul Bartoszek of Leavenworth, Kan. and Dennis Gundlach of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Olga Branum of New Orleans, La.; brother, Albert Newman of Fayetteville, Pa.; two sisters, Shirley Cleland of Houston, Texas and Pat Saballa of Katy, Texas; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and extended family including the Rosales and Dupont families.

Visitation will be Friday, July 13, 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. service at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill. Interment will be at Dacy Cemetery in Whatley with full military honors.

John L. Smith

John L. "Johnny" Smith, died at the age of 84 at a local nursing home June 25, 2007. He was a native of Ramer, a long-time resident of Wagarville and a current resident of Mobile. A chemical production supervisor with Olin Corporation, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Leroy, the VFW and a WWII veteran in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise R. Smith of Mobile; three daughters, Pamela Etheredge of Leroy, Linda Kay Loper of Daphne and Janet Barrios of Chatom; two brothers, R.G. "Gib" Smith of Pensacola, Fla. and Gerald Smith of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Brenda Bentley of Montgomery; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson on June 27 with interment in Wagarville Baptist Cemetery.
