Col. Dayton Robinson Jr.

Col. Dayton Robinson Jr., 81, of Tuscaloosa, died Aug. 1, 2007 at his home. Funeral services were Aug. 4 at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South with the Rev. Sandy Felkins officiating. Graveside services followed at Grove Hill Cemetery. He was preceded in death by parents Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Robinson Sr.; two sons, Dayton "Sonny" Robinson III and John Hurbert Robinson; and three brothers, Thomas W. Robinson, James E. Robinson and Daniel C. Robinson.

Robinson graduated from Clarke County High School in Grove Hill, received a bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Alabama and a master's degree from George Washington University. He became a member of the United States Marine Corps and served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietname War, flying approximately 400 combat missions. He received two Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Bronze Star w/v, 13 air medals, an Air Force Commendation medal, as well as other personal medals. He was deeply devoted to service to his country and served 30 years in the military. Robinson also assisted his wife with the work of the Compassionate Friends, a self-help group for bereaved parents.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Swanson Robinson; daughter, Dr. Carolyn Robinson Marino; brother, Frank Marty Robinson Sr.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers were Frank Woodson, Kevin Woodson, Bonner Lee, James Lee and John Crowell. Honorary pallbearers were Earnest Woodson, Jack Means, Robert Berglin, Ned Lee, John Lee, Bill Minor, Dr. Jerry Eure, David Andres, members of the Compassionate Friends Tuscaloosa Chapter and Dr. Naresh Kumar. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Compassionate Friends, c/o Beth Farmer, 8222 Ivy Ln., Tuscaloosa, AL 35405

James Austin Crews Jr.

James Austin Crews Jr., 52, a native of Jacksonville, Fla. and a resident of Tibbie, died at an area hospital Aug. 7, 2007. He was a guard with the Mississippi State Penal System and a member of the Tibbie Baptist Church.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Williams Crews of Tibbie.

Graveside services were Aug. 10 at Gordy Cemetery in Tibbie under the direction of Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom.

Audrey June Lloyd

Audrey June Lloyd, died Aug. 14, 2007 at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital in Grove Hill at the age of 88. A native of Clarke County and a resident of Grove Hill, she retired as a seamstress from Vanity Fair Mills and was a member of Horeb Baptist Church in Whatley.

Survivors include two sisters, Irma Williams of Whatley and Ella Driskell of Jackson; and a niece, Apsie Harper of Albany, Ga.

Funeral services were Aug. 15 at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill. Interment was at Hill Cemetery in Whatley.

Sylvia Yvette French Hunt

Sylvia Yvette French Hunt of Jackson, 41, died Aug. 2, 2007 at Providence Hospital in Mobile. She was a member of Carlton AOH Church of Carlton and served as a deaconess and on the Mother Board.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Hunt of Jackson; a sister, Dorothy French of Jackson; one brother, Charles (Peggy) Stewart of Detroit, Mich; stepmother, Carolyn French of Jackson; one stepsister, Katrina (Jermaine) Hill of Panama City, Fla.; five stepbrothers, Richard (Velma) Howard of Alma, the Rev. Norman (Sandra) Howard of McIntosh, Kenny and Herman Howard, both of Panama City, Fla. and Fredrick (Michelle) Howard of Jackson; mother-inlaw, Pearlie Hunt of Fairhope; three aunts, Leslie Hunter of Detroit, Mildred Johnson of Auburn Hill, Mich. and Carrie (Joseph) Clemons of Carlton.

Funeral services were Aug. 8 at Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church in Jackson with the Rev. D.W. Moore officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery of Carlton, Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Salia Shanice Webb

Salia Shanice Webb, infant daughter of Paula L. Campbell and Solomon Webb, both of Jackson, died Aug. 10, 2007 at Jackson Medical Center. She was 8 months old.

Survivors include her parents and two brothers, Zeldric Campbell and Keenen Webb, both of Jackson; grandparents, Mary and Cleveland Gamble, Deloris and Leonard Beck and Margaret and Eddie Purifoy, all of Jackson and Pearline Ervin King of Leroy; great-grandmother, Laura Garraway of Jackson; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Aug. 15 at Star of Zion A.M.E. Zion Church of Jackson, directed by Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson.

Lillie Bell Williams

Lillie Bell Williams, 61, a native of Gainestown, died Aug. 8, 2007 at Jackson Medical Center. A homemaker, she was also a member of Gainestown AOH Church of Gainestown where she served on the Mother Board.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Williams Sr. of Gainestown; 10 daughters, Isabella (Oscar) Washington, Lillie (Walter) Jackson, Carolyn (Fred) Jones, Janice (Kennis) Robinson, Brenda (Tony) Ivory, Lenora Chapman and Priscilla (Carl) Hayes, all of Gainestown, Shirley (Tyrone) West of Walker Springs, Stephanie (Anthony) Brown of Mobile and Gladys Williams of Tuscaloosa; six sons, Frank (Latitia) Williams Jr. of Whatley, Edward (Jennifer) Williams, Earnest (Jennifer) Williams and Kelvin Williams, all of Gainestown, Adrian Williams and Antonio Williams, both of Birmingham; two sisters, Daisy Hunt of Gainestown and Ruthie Pritchett of Walker Springs; a brother, Bobby Kemp of Mobile; 35 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Aug. 11 at Gainestown AOH Church with interment in the church cemetery. Overseer Heary Rodgers, pastor and elder Lucille Henry officiated. Arrangements were directed by Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson.

Leigh Van Hoose Sr.

Leigh Van Hoose Sr. died Aug. 8, 2007 at Jackson Health Care in Jackson, at the age of 89. He was a WWII veteran and worked as an operator at International Paper for more than 30 years.

He is survived by a son, Leigh (Sue) Van Hoose Jr. of Slidell, La.; two daughters, Martha (Bill) Rice of Natchez, Miss. and Virginia (Marc) Kyzar of Jackson; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Aug. 11 at Hooks Cemetery in Sunflower with the Rev. Jim DuFriend officiating. Pallbearers were Van Sims, Russ Sims, Paul Van Hoose, Mike Rice, Earl Strong, Gene Harrell III, Gene Harrell IV and Joe Harrell. St. Stephens Funeral Home of St. Stephens directed.

Betsy Jo Ott

Betsy Jo Ott, 73, of Thomasville, died Aug. 6, 2007 at her home. She was a former secretary and real estate agent with Pope's Real Estate in Thomasville and a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Thomasville. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Homer Parker and sister, Juliet Parker.

She is survived by her husband, Vester C. Ott of Thomasville; mother, Emma Alston Parker of Thomasville; aunt, Ludie Alston Stone of Jackson; and cousin, Cecelia Adams of St. Stephens.

Funeral services were at O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville, Aug. 8, with the Revs. James Young, Fred Wiley and Charlie Andrews officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery in Magnolia.

Pallbearers were Jeremy Ogle, Jonathan Ogle, Joseph Ogle, Josh Alford, Mitch Aitken and Todd Horton. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Ogle, Jerry Ogle, Tony Ogle, Lyn Ott, Jackie Soper, Rusty Gates, Jeff Gibson, Jonathan Adams and Will Adams.

John Harlan Becton

John Harlan Becton, 83, a native of Millry and resident of Grove Hill, died Aug. 19, 2007 at his residence. He was retired from First Bank and Trust, having served as president and chief executive officer. He was a graduate of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn University and a member and past chairman of deacons at Grove Hill Baptist Church. Becton was also one of the founding board members of Grove Hill Academy, founding chairman of Clarke County Industrial Board, past president of Grove Hill Chamber of Commerce, founded Grove Hill Dixie Boys Baseball League, founding president of Grove Hill Lions Club, past chairman of the Alabama Independent Bankers Association and of Clarke- Washington Auburn clubs, and was elected to the Millry High School Hall of Fame in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Madge Taylor Becton of Grove Hill; son, Dana Becton of Grove Hill; two daughters, Harla (Ray) Barnes of Grove Hill and Jadda Becton of Millry; sister, Jackie (Bill) Aydelette of Mobile; eight grandchildren, Tony (Julie) Brunson, Robyn (Tommy) Blaylock, Taylor Becton, Celina Becton, Daley ( Jerry Harmon) Strickland, Brendan Becton, Darren (Tracie) Barnes and Tony (Dawn) Barnes; and eight great-grandchildren, Marlye Brunson, Abbye Brunson, Trace Strickland, Mimi Blaylock, Molli Blaylock, Analeigh Barnes, Dylan Barnes and Cade Barnes.

Rev. Thomas Fox Sr.

Funeral services were Aug. 21 at Grove Hill Baptist Church with interment at Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill under the direction of Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill.

Memorials may be made to the Grove Hill Baptist Church or Clarke Preparatory Baseball Fund.

Carl Daniel Nix Sr.

Carl Daniel Nix Sr., 56, a native of Vernel, Miss. and a resident of Jackson, died Aug. 15, 2007 at Jackson Medical Center in Jackson. He was a member of the Jackson A.O.H. Church of God in Jackson. Nix is the son of Mary L. Savage Nix and the Rev. Rubin Nix of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Louise Nix-St. George.

Survivors include two sons, Carl Daniel Nix Jr. and Carlton Nix, both of Mobile; six daughters, Jennifer (Darron) Young of Mt. Vernon, Sarah House and Brittany Nix, both of Mobile, Treviase Lueyies, Zeldrick Campbell and Angela Johnson, all of Jackson; his parents; three brothers, Edward (Minnie) Nix of Jackson, Billy R. Nix of Detroit, Mich. and Aaron Nix of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Lillie M Smith of Toddtown and Ardell Poellnitz of Jackson; seven grandchildren and devoted friend, Marion Payne of Beatrice.

Funeral services were Aug. 21 at St. Union Baptist Church of Jackson with Pastor James Howard and the Rev. Fredrick Thompson Sr. officiating. Interment was in the Good Hope A.M.E. Cemetery in Gainestown with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were his nephews and flower bearers were nieces and friends.
