Ethel Mae Dickinson

Ethel Mae Dickinson, 90, a resident of Grove Hill, died Oct. 10, 2007 at her residence. She was a member of Orange Hill Baptist Church of Grove Hill.

She is survived by two daughters, Lula (Lorenzo) Hayes of Detroit, Mich. and Worthy Bowen of Grove Hill; four sons, John Dickinson, Percy Dickinson, Melvin Dickinson, all of Grove Hill and Clayton Dickinson of Detroit; two sisters, Murtis Barnett of Grove Hill and Dorothy Hicks of Mobile; brother, Earnest Glenn of Mobile; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were Oct. 16 at the Orange Hill Baptist Church with Pastor James Barron officiating and Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Jerry Lee Hixon Sr.

Jerry Lee Hixon Sr., 56, a resident of Jackson, died Oct. 13, 2007 at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was a retiree of the city of Jackson.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Foreman Hixon of Jackson; two daughters, Ida Bell (Reginald) Berry of Jackson and Michelle (Felton) Burroughs of Whatley; three sons, Jerry (Darlene) Dixon Jr., Anthony (Adrian) Hixon, Maurice (Toshia) Hixon, all of Jackson; father, Samuel C. Hixon of Monroeville; brother, Leon (Devinia) Hixon; three sisters, Marcella (James) McMillan, Linda (Eddie) Gross and Evon (Keith) McMillan, all of Monroeville; and 13 grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 19, 6-8 p.m. at the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. Asecond viewing will be Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11, at the Jackson Street Baptist Church of Jackson. The Rev. Larry Purifoy, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery of Jackson with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Tina Louise Hunt

Tina Louise Hunt, of Alma, died at the age of 35, Oct. 14, 2007, at her residence.

She is survived by her husband, Jarvis K. Hunt Sr. of Alma; son, Jarvis K. Hunt Jr. of Alma; sister, Sarah (Michael) Abston of Mobile; brother, Kevin (Bessie) House of Auburn; two aunts, Addie (L.C.) Kimbell and Louis House, both of Jackson; seven uncles, David Anderson, Johnnie Anderson, Lester Anderson, George Williams, all of Jackson, Leroy (Hazel) Martin Jr. of Montgomery, James (Betty) Williams Jr. of Wagarville and Arnold Williams of Choctaw Bluff; and mother-in-law, Bertha Mae Hunt of Alma.

Public viewing will be Friday, Oct. 19, 1-5:30 p.m., from the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Saturday, Oct. 20, 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at 2, at the Star Zion A.M.E. Church of Jackson. The Rev. Irmatine Thomas Chastang, pastor, will be the officiating minister. Interment will follow in the Antioch A.M.E. Cemetery of Alma with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Francis Gray Martin

Francis Gray Martin, a resident of Mt. Vernon, died Oct. 10, 2007 at the age of 87, at Atmore Nursing Home. Amember of Williams Chapel Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, he was a retiree of Barry Steam Plant of Bucks.

He is survived by seven daughters, Johnita (Leo) Cox of Jackson, Emelia (Frank) Kennedy of Detroit, Mich., Bettie (Frank) Bryant of Los Angeles, Calif., Lillie (Henry) Davis and Jessie Martin, both of Shreveport, La. and Gloria (George) Gibbs of Frisco City; son, Bennie Martin of Pontiac, Mich.; sister, Margaret Martin of Birmingham; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were Oct. 16 at the Williams Chapel Baptist Church followed by interment in the Roper Cemetery of Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Kelvin Maye, pastor, was the officiating minister. Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directed.

Lula D. Pope Ola

Lula D. Pope Ola, 53, a resident of Jamaica, N.Y., departed this life on Oct. 10, 2007 at a hospital in New York. She received her education in the New York City Public Schools and received an undergraduate degree from City University New York College, a master's of art degree in education from Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. Ola was employed as a teacher in the New York Public School System and was a member of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church of Jamaica, N.Y. She was predeceased by her father, John Lee Pope Sr., her brother, John Lee Pope Jr. and sister, Gail Marie.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Olayiwola Ola of Jamaica; one daughter, Galemarie Ola of Dallas, Texas; son, Jason Ola of Dallas; mother, Demas Mitchell Pope of Whatley; six sisters, Patricia Pope of Inglewood, Calif., Carol (Greg) Cody of Dallas, Lois (Horace) Fuller of Northballmore, N.Y., Elaine Pope of Jamaica, Joan Hundon of Sacramento, Calif. and Tillie (Will) Pope of Denver, Colo.; brother, Anthony Lloyd Pope of Whatley; and grandmother, Ruby Mitchell of Whatley.

Funeral services were Oct. 15 at the Indian Ridge Baptist Church in Whatley with the Rev. Johnnie Lynum, pastor. Interment followed in the Pope Family Cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Helen Ruth Baldwin

Helen Ruth Williams Baldwin, a native and resident of the Winn community of Jackson, died at the age of 70, Oct. 14, 2007, at Infirmary West in Mobile. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ike Williams and Genoa Hannon Williams and two children, Beverly Law and Morris Lee Baldwin.

She retired from the Clarke County Board of Education Transportation Department. She was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Winn and a member of Amies Pride Chapter No. 590 Order of the Eastern Star. She was affectionately known as "Muddear" by her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, K.T. Baldwin of Jackson; two sons, McNeal Baldwin and Lerone Baldwin, both of Jackson; daughter, Brenda Denise (Anthony) Lee of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Isaac Othello (Ottie) Williams, Daniel (Dorothy) Williams and Willie (Verna) Williams, all of Jackson; five grandchildren, Olivia Ward, Kendall Law and Tonia Gildersleeve, devoted caregiver, all of Jackson; Sonja Ward of Mobile and Angela Linton of Norfolk, Va.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 19, 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church of the Winn community. Viewing will be one hour prior to service. Nephews and great-nephews will serve as pallbearers and family and friends as flower bearers. The Eastern Star ceremony will be at 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being directed by Andrews Funeral Home.

Audrey Buford Beech

Audrey Buford Beech, a Hobson native and resident, died at the age of 86 on Oct. 19, 2007. After graduating from Washington County High School he enlisted in the Army and served during WWII on Tienian Island and Japan. He met his future wife, Ethel Bernice Pope, in Oxford, Miss. while sending a telegram to his family to inform them of his whereabouts. After discharge they returned to Hobson where they raised their family in the home that he had built.

Beech retired from Liberty National Life Insurance Company after more than 30 years as an agent. He lived his life in service to his community, church and family. Afaithful member of Pine Level Baptist Church, he served as song leader, deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was also instrumental in securing a water system for the community and served as chairman of the Hobson Water Board. In addition he was a member of the St. Stephens Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents, Laura and Buford Beech; two sisters, Mary Ethel and Lillian Beech Spencer; and brother, Elsworth who died in early childhood.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Sue (Peter) Palmer and Margo (Bill) Hospodar; three sons, Philip (Debra) Beech, Mark (Brenda) Beech and Lyle (Tammy) Beech; a sister, Melvin (Bill) Bloomer; five brothers, Bill (Jean) Beech, Vern Beech, Thurman (Frances) Beech, Fletcher Beech and Buddy (Joy) Beech; grandchildren, Summer (Ryan) Kalong, Andy (Jisun) Hospodar, Adam (Lesley) Hospodar, Katherine Palmer, Anne Palmer, Allison Hospodar, John Hospodar, Drew Beech, Shae Beech, Rusty Beech, Zach Beech and Laura Beech; and great-great-granddaughter, Lily Hospodar.

Funeral services were Oct. 24 at Pine Level Baptist Church of Hobson, with interment in the Jones Beech Cemetery in Hobson. Active pallbearers were Roger Beech, Chris Beech, Barry Beech, Lamar Beech, Frank Dickey and Gordon Sloat. Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Beech, Irwin Cooper, Nelson Beech, Kenneth Howard and David Pierson. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom.

James H. Brewer Jr.

James H. Brewer Jr., 61, a native of Jackson, died at his residence in Wagarville Oct. 20, 2007. He was a retired truck driver with Wayne McCoy Trucking and a member of Rivers Baptist Church in Sims Chapel.

Survivors include daughters, Charlotte Keith of Wagarville and Patsy Reed of Jackson; brother, Freddie Dick of Wagarville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 22 at Rivers Baptist Church and interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Keith, Leon Hubbart, Hayward Parnell, Al Parnell and James Cupit. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson

Hubert Marvin Jones

Hubert Marvin Jones, died Oct. 16, 2007 in a Mobile hospital at the age of 80. He was a native of Alma and resident of Saraland. A member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in Alma, Jones worked in apartment maintenance with MBI Management.

He is survived by his wife, Sadie M. Jones of Saraland; a son, Troy Jones of Saraland; three daughters, Gloria Jones and Janet Pickering, both of Saraland and Deborah Edmonds of Chunchula; three brothers, Jimmy Jones and Arnold Jones, both of Alma and Charles Jones of Saraland; two sisters, Hazel Langley of Saraland and Vada Stokeley of Foley; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 19 at Stave Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Maloy and Tom Dees officiating. Pallbearers were Jeff McDonald, Wayne Edmonds, Clint Edmonds, Matthew Edmonds, Darryl Presnall and Johnny Presnall. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Margaret Presnall Deese

Margaret Presnall Deese, 88, affectionately known as "Coco", a resident of Grove Hill, died Oct. 18, 2007 at the Mobile Infirmary Hospital. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include two daughters, Irma Martin of Gautier, Miss. and Mary M. Cox of Grove Hill; seven sisters, Mary (Willie) Sayles and Inez Hill, both of Detroit, Mich., Delois Robinson and Eunice Matthews, both of Grove Hill, Corain McCall of Springfield, Mass., Annie R. Edgar and Ann Hampton, both of Flint, Mich.; one brother, James (Henrietta) Presnall of Flint; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Public viewing will be Friday, Oct. 26 from 12 noon until 5:30 p.m. at the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Saturday, Oct. 27 from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at 2 p.m. at the Orange Hill Baptist Church in Grove Hill. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
