Edsel A. Sides
Edsel A. Sides, died at the age of 80, Dec. 17, 2007, at a Mobile hospital. He was a native of Carbon Hill and a resident of Jackson. A former plant manager for Lowman Power Plant in Leroy, he was a senior project manager for Sgt. Lundy Power Company of Chicago and a member of the Jackson Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Steve Sides of Paducah, Ky.; a brother, Don Gene Sides of Indianapolis, Ind. and one grandchild, Karen Deanna Gibson of Richmond, Va.
Funeral services were Dec. 19 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Interment was Dec. 20 at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens in Jasper, Tenn.
William Joseph Sessions
William Joseph Sessions, 47, died Dec. 15, 2007 at Jackson Medical Center in Jackson. He was a Florida native and a resident of Jackson, spending most of his life as a superintendent of ironworkers.
Survivors include a daughter, April (James) Loper of Theodore; one grandson, Tony of Theodore; two sisters, Star (Timmy) Dunagan of Jackson and Barbara Spears of Grove Hill; and two nieces, Mica and Tara of Jackson.
A graveside service was Dec. 17 at the Bethel Cemetery
in Coffeeville with the Rev. William Allison officiating. St. Stephens Funeral Home of St. Stephens directed services.
Mack Robinson
Mack "MC" Robinson, a resident of Gainstown, died at the age of 73 on Dec. 16, 2007 at his residence. He was a retiree of Searcy Hospital in Mt. Vernon, a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Annette Whittiker Robinson and Willie Lucas Sr.; son, Brad Robinson; daughter, Jackie N. Robinson; sister, Margaret D. Lucas; and brothers, Spencer R. Lucas, Emanuel Robinson Jr. and Frank Lucas.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Fox Robinson of Gainestown; five sons, Mack (Mary) Robinson Jr. of Mobile, Lester Robinson of Lima, Ohio, James Robinson, Milton (Stephanie) Robinson and Timothy (Valarie) Robinson, all of Birmingham; four daughters, Linda (Willie L.) Williams, Sherry D. Martin, Jeanette (Gene) Sims and Demetrice (Randi) Robinson, all of Birmingham; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Evans (Frances) Robinson of Jackson, Levi (Verdean) Robinson of Choctaw Bluff, Orie Robinson Hartman (Dora) Robinson of Sunflower, Williams C. Lucas Sr. and Norman A. (Deborah) Lucas Sr., both of Mobile, Lamar (Diane) Lucas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six sisters, Etheleen Weaver of Citronelle, Nettie (Charles) Wiley of McIntosh, Viletta B. (Charles) Perkins of Mobile, Ruth Davis of Detoit, Mich., Brenda Robinson and Tracey Robinson, both of Brooklyn; and three aunts, Virginia Lucas of Choctaw Bluff, Bertha Whittaker of Gainestown and Bernice Dixon of Mobile.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 21, 6-9 p.m. at the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson. A second viewing will be Saturday, Dec. 22, 11 a.m. until the funeral hour of 12 noon at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Interment will follow in the Antioch Cemetery
in Alma.
Willie Young Sr.
Willie Young Sr., 77, a resident of Whatley, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital. He was a retiree of Scotch Lumber Company of Fulton. He was a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church of Whatley where he served on the deacon board.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Lee Lynum Young of Whatley; five sons, Willie (Laura) Young Jr., Henry Earl Young, Charles Young, Clay (Francis) Young and Earl Young, all of Whatley; three daughters, Liza (Jimmy) Snell, Ida (Sam) Fail, both of Whatley and Cora Young of Riverdale, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one brother, James Young of Whatley.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 22, 1 p.m. at the Morning Star Baptist Church. Viewing will be from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Harris Cleveland Cemetery
of Whatley with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Clayton Gray Frowner
Clayton Gray Frowner, 63, a lifelong resident of the Manila community of Jackson, died Dec. 4, 2007 at his sister's home in Alma. He was preceded in death by his parents the Rev. Ellis C. and Mary Ann Frowner. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, church treasurer and was a deacon. He was president of the Progressive Club of Alma, Manila and Gainestown; served as president of the Honey Bees Community Club; president of the Sunday School Annual; and secretary of the Manila Hunting Club, of which he helped to organize.
Frowner also served as assistant fire chief and treasurer of the Alma Fire Department. He was a member of White Hall Lodge No. 951 F&AM of Alabama where he served as Senior Warden for many years; St. Peter Lodge No. 629, the Royal Arch; was a Worthy Patron of L.D. Williams Pride Chapter No. 730 OES; and served as a Clarke County Commissioner, District 4, from Jan. 18, 1993 until Nov. 13, 2000.
He was honorably discharged from the United States Army receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include a son, Maple L. Hunt of Gainestown; three sisters, Edna Williams of Alma, Mary Lee Kirksey of South Holland, Ill. and Novetter B. Files of Glenwood, Ill; seven brothers, the Rev. Webster (Beverly) Frowner of Kansas City, Kan., Jessie Frowner of Chicago, Ill., John Max (Alice) Frowner and the Rev. Henry (Martha) Frowner, both of Manila, David (Aretha) Frowner, Phillip (Annie) Frowner and Bennie Frowner, all of Alma.
Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 8, at St. Matthew No. 1 Baptist Church. Viewing was from 11 a.m. until the funeral service. The Masonic ceremony was performed. There was a military service at the graveside with burial in the Frowner Cemetery
in Manila. Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directed arrangements.
Curtis Armstead
Curtis Armstead, age 85, a native and resident of the Allen community of Grove Hill, died Dec. 22, 2007 at the William F. Green Veteran's Home in Bay Minette. He spent his younger years in Richmond, Ind. where he was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. AWorld War II Veteran of the Army Air Force, he was honorably discharged. A retiree of International Harvester in Richmond and the city of Richmond, he was a member of the Elks Onyx Lodge and affiliated with the Masonic Order. After retirement, he returned to Allen and joined Mount Horeb African Methodist Episcopal Church where he served as a steward and trustee. His brother, Ellis, and three sisters, Emma, Rosetta and Louella preceded him death.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Armstead of Allen; three sons, Jackie Armstead of Richmond, Larry (Diane) Armstead of Yorba Linda, Calif., Kim (Mitzi) Armstead of Delaware, Ohio; and three daughters, Muneen Blanton of Atlanta, Ga., Curtistine Armstead and Doris Jean Sheppard, both of Dayton, Ohio; five stepsons, Alfred (Ruth) Bowen and Robert (Hettie) Bowen of Richmond, Henry (Gwen) Briggs Jr. and John Briggs, both of Allen and Jeffery Briggs of Topeka, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Toby Austin of Cleveland, Ohio and Tannia Rile (fiancé Henry Dosey) of Richmond; two sisters, Frankie (Joe) Carter and Gertrude Carter, both of Richmond; one brother, James Bonner of Richmond; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren and 15 step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, Dec. 27, 1 p.m. at Mount Horeb African Methodist Episcopal Church of the Allen community with the Rev. Lewis Chapman, pastor, officiating. Viewing will be from 12 noon until the 1 p.m. funeral hour. Burial will be in the Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery
in the Suggsville community with military rites at graveside. Arrangements are being directed by Andrews Funeral Home, Jackson.
Griffin
Funeral services for Billy B. Griffin of Jackson were conducted on Friday, March 3 at the First Baptist Church in Jackson. Dr. Timothy Huie, pastor and Dr. Rick Cagle officiated the service. Burial was in the Pinecrest Cemetery
in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Griffin, 85, died Feb. 28, 2006. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University where he received a degree from the school of engineering. A World War II Army veteran, he retired from Parham and Parham in 1982. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson where he was involved in mission trips to Russia, Alaska, Guatemala and Wyoming. A native of Laurel, Miss. and a resident of Jackson, he was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Buchanan Griffin and Joseph M. Griffin Sr., brothers, Wall Griffin and Joseph M. Griffin Jr. and sister Lorraine Griffin Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Adair O'Steen Griffin of Jackson; daughter, Gay Griffin (Allen) Sheldon of Columbus, Ga.; two sons, W. Herbert (Christine) Griffin of Titusville, Fla. and Allan M. (Rosemarie) Griffin of Brentwood, Calif.; sister, Sarah Griffin Glenn; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Crim
Eleanor Parker Crim, 87, of Monroeville, died March 6, 2006 at Englewood Nursing Home. She was a native of Marengo County, lived most of her life in Jackson and spent the last few years in Monroeville. She was a retired registered nurse.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Crim of Monroeville and Michael Crim of Mobile; daughter, Cynthia McKinney of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Carolyn Lewis of Sweet Water; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The graveside service was March 8 at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson with the Rev. Glen Eubanks officiating and Johnson Funeral Home of Monroeville directing.
Douglas
The funeral service for Dr. George C. Douglas was conducted on Feb. 2 at the Brookside Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ernest Dover officiated the service. Interment was at Brookside Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Douglas, a resident of Millbrook, died Jan. 29, 2006 at a local hospital.
He graduated from medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and practiced medicine for 53 years. Dr. Douglas practiced medicine in Clarke County since 1996 at Health Options in Jackson and had his own offices in Grove Hill and McIntosh. He retired from medicine in 2002. He was an U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, June Douglas of Millbrook; five daughters, Mary Belle Sabogal of California, Martha Godwin of Birmingham, Miriam (Rand) Armbrester of McCalla, Suzanne (Ken) Strength of Millbrook and Gigi (Rus) Morris of Deatsville; four sons, George (Gypsey) Douglas Jr. of Birmingham, Robert (Sylvia) Douglas of Missouri, Sam (Donna) Douglas of Pelham and Timothy (Kim) Douglas of Allen, Texas; three stepdaughters, Kay (James) Deland and Linda (Lee) Lewis, all of Grove Hill and Sandra (Arthur) Tew of Andalusia; two stepsons, Steven (Sara) Causey of Jackson and Jeffrey (Lori) Causey of Conyers, Ga.; two sisters, Lillian Berg of Virginia and Sarah Douglas of Birmingham; brother, William (Joyce) Douglas of Virginia; 35 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren.
Clemons
Carey DeJaun Clemons, 23, a resident of Carlton, died March 3, 2006 at an oil field in Carlton where he worked.
He is survived by his parents, father, Jimmie Clemons Sr. and mother, Patricia Clemons, both of Carlton; son, Zack Stephnes of Carlton; two brothers, Warren Pearson of Walker Springs and Jimmie Clemons Jr. of Carlton; grandparents, Carrie and Joseph Clemons of Carlton and Luvenia Pearson of Gaston.
The funeral service will be Thursday, March 9 (today), 11 a.m. at St. Paul A.M.E. Church of Carlton. Burial will be in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery
in Carlton with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
