Deas
Alice Marie Myrick Deas, a native of Coffeeville and a resident of Lakeview Assisted Living Facility in Sweet Water, died March 8, 2006 at the age of 90. She was a lifelong member of Coffeeville United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. A graduate of Coffeeville High School, she attended the University of North Alabama the former Florence State Teachers College. She taught school in Coffeeville, Fulton and Leroy before retiring to raise a family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Noland Milton Deas and her parents, Clarence Rone and Winnie Scruggs Myrick.
Survivors include her four children, Noland Rone (Lynn) Deas of Thomasville, Ga., Julia Marie Deas (Duelon) Dunagan of Coffeeville, Lois Elaine Deas (Kenneth) Jones of Jackson and Milton Gray (Debbie) Deas of Dothan; a sister, Janet Myrick McKee of Jackson; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The funeral service was March 10 at Coffeeville United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Ulcanush Baptist Cemetery
in Coffeeville with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Methodist Children's Home in Selma or the local Gideons International.
Griffin
Funeral services for Billy B. Griffin of Jackson were conducted on Friday, March 3 at the First Baptist Church in Jackson. Dr. Timothy Huie, pastor and Dr. Rick Cagle officiated the service. Burial was in the Pinecrest Cemetery
in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Griffin, 85, died Feb. 28, 2006. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University where he received a degree from the school of engineering. A World War II Army veteran, he retired from Parham and Parham in 1982. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson where he was involved in mission trips to Russia, Alaska, Guatemala and Wyoming. A native of Laurel, Miss. and a resident of Jackson, he was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Buchanan Griffin and Joseph M. Griffin Sr., brothers, Wall Griffin and Joseph M. Griffin Jr. and sister Lorraine Griffin Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Adair O'Steen Griffin of Jackson; daughter, Gay Griffin (Allen) Sheldon of Columbus, Ga.; two sons, W. Herbert (Christine) Griffin of Titusville, Fla. and Allan M. (Rosemarie) Griffin of Brentwood, Calif.; sister, Sarah Griffin Glenn; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Pallbearers were Weston Sheldon, Herman Boutwell, Tom Henley, Jimmie Ricketts, Frank Dixon and Juan Whitehead.
Honorary pallbearers were M.O. Bostrom, Albert Garrett, Ira Rikard Jr., Arnold Smith and Irwin Cooper.
Huggins
Edward Allen Huggins, 76, died March 10, 2006 in a Mobile hospital. He was a retired employee of the State of Alabama Mental Health Department and a member of Tompkins Baptist Church in Grove Hill.
He is survived by his wife, Amy Lois Huggins of Grove Hill; three sons, Larry Huggins of Atlanta, Ga., John Randy Harrison of Wetumpka and James Ricky Harrison of Thomasville; daughter, Elaine Short of Monroeville; brother, Fred Huggins of Jackson; two sisters, Kathy Blanton of Grove Hill and Imogene Caldwell of Hartwell, Ga.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was March 12 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill.
Overstreet
Byreece Dunagan Overstreet, 76, a member of the Ulcanush Baptist Church in Coffeeville and homemaker, died March 12, 2006 at her daughter's home in Salitpa.
She is survived by a son, Mark E. Overstreet of Jackson; daughter, Nancy O. (Max) Byrd of Jackson; two brothers, Leroy Dunegan and James Dunagan, both of Coffeeville; sister, Margie D. Sullivan of Mobile; two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The graveside service was in the Ulcanush Baptist Cemetery
in Coffeeville on March 14 with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Overstreet, Robert Overstreet, Bruce Overstreet, Ralph Dunagan, Timothy Dunagan and Rayford Guy.
Taylor
Melinda Ruth Turner Taylor, 89, a resident of Millry, died March 11, 2006 at Washington County Infirmary in Chatom. She was a member of the Knights Chapel Baptist Church of Millry where she served in the senior choir.
She is survived by four daughters, Ethel M. Roper of Mobile, Betty (the Rev. Frank) Johnson of Montgomery, Clydine (the Rev. Richmond) Chaney and Marie A. Green, all of Millry; two sons, Julis Taylor Jr. of Columbus, Ga., Chester Taylor of Detroit, Mich.; 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was March 15 at Knights Chapel Baptist Church in Millry. Interment was in the Providence Cemetery
in Millry with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Williams
Ray Walker Williams, 76, a native and resident of McIntosh, died March 14, 2006 at USA Medical Center in Mobile. He was a retired saw operator for a logging company.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Reed Williams of McIntosh; three sons, Hermanee (Barbara) Williams of South Carolina, Ray (Shavon) Reed of Mobile and Roy Williams of Slidell, La.; five daughters, Mary (Vick) Barnes, Amy (Aaron) Reed, Rachel Williams and Chorttle (Chuckie) Barnes, all of McIntosh and Barbara (Carlos) Villareal of Texas; two sisters, Stella Jones of Mt. Vernon and Ida Williams of Mt.Vernon, N.Y.; 31 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Saturday, March 18, 12 noon at the Church of God Deliverance in McIntosh. Burial will be in the Vaughn Cemetery
in McIntosh with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Upshaw
Linda Grace Upshaw, 54, a native of Grove Hill and a resident of Coffeeville, died March 11, 2006 at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital at the age of 54. She was a member of Wilson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Grove Hill.
Survivors include a brother, Wallace (Thomasine) Upshaw of Daphne; two sisters, Diane (Harold) Upshaw-Lambert of Stockbridge, Ga. and Brenda Upshaw of Lawrenceville, Ga.
The funeral service will be Saturday, March 18, 11 a.m. at Wilson Chapel A.M.E. Church in Grove Hill with the Rev. Levy Marshall, pastor and eulogist. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson. Viewing will be on Saturday, 10 a.m. until the funeral hour. Burial will be in the St. Peter Baptist Church Cemetery
in Allen.
Carpenter
Mary Inez Carpenter, a homemaker and resident of Chatom, died March 9, 2006 at a local hospital. She was a native of Americus, Ga.
She is survived by four daughters, Judy Plant of Cantonment, Fla., Tammy Bradley of Buckatunna, Miss., Tracy Blount of Citronelle and Donna Miller of Chatom; three sons, Harold Carpenter of Phoenix, Ariz., Johnny Carpenter of Chatom and Roger Carpenter of McCool, Miss.; brother, Walter Singletary of Seneca, S.C.; two sisters, Alice Wanstall of Americus, Ga. and Catherine Moss of Chatom; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and best friend, Diane Beech.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Cathy Carpenter Lacoste and Wanda Carpenter and a brother, Monroe Singletary.
The funeral service was March 11 at Springbank Baptist Church in Chatom with the Rev. DeWayne Williams officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers were Donnie Ray Boykin, Roy Overstreet, Louis Sullivan, Victor Guy, Grady Beech and Robert Miller.
deShazo
Dr. William Floyd deShazo III of Tuscaloosa, a former resident of Jackson, and a member of the First United Methodist Church, died March 12, 2006 at the Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He was the son of the late W.F. deShazo Jr. and Grace S. deShazo. He was 81.
He attended the University of Alabama after which he joined the V-12 Unit of the U.S. Navy, receiving his degree from Howard College. He received a medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, La. in 1948 and served an internship at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield.
After practicing medicine in Atmore, he served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He later practiced medicine in Jackson for 20 years until 1972 when he became a member of the faculty of Community Health Sciences at the University of Alabama. He served as chairman of the residency program and the department of Family Medicine. After retiring, he was named Professor Emeritus, establishing the William F. deShazo Award which recognizes an outstanding Family Practice Resident. While at UA he served as the team physician for the athletic department. He was a member of the American Medical Association and a life member of the American Academy of Family Medicine.
The memorial service was March 15 with a private burial service. The Revs. Dr. Kenneth Dunnivant and Duncan Hunter officiated the service with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
