Leslie James
Leslie “Shubd” James of Sunflower, a retired saw operator for a logging company, died Dec. 3, 2006 at Providence Hospital in Mobile at the age of 81. He was a member of Little Sunflower No. 3 Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Augusta Field James of Sunflower; two daughters, Celestine Fikes of Sunflower and Shelia Williams of Birmingham; stepson, Ronald W. Woods of Sunflower; stepdaughter, Linda F. Woods of Chatom; brother, Jeff James Sr.; sister, Lizzie Jackson of Sunflower; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
The funeral service will be Friday, Dec. 8, 11 a.m. at Little Sunflower Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Redhill Cemetery
in Sunflower with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Cleveland Leggett
Cleveland Leggett, a retired logger and member of St. Luke Baptist Church in Walker Springs, died Dec. 3, 2006 at his home at the age of 71. A native and resident of Walker Springs, he was preceded in death by his parents, Leola Jones Leggett and Ernest Leggett.
He is survived by his wife, Janie B. Leggett of Walker Springs; two sons, Eddie Roy Leggett of Walker Springs and Willie Lewis Leggett of Grove Hill; four daughters, Sammie Robinson of Grove Hill, Ledora (William) King of Whatley, LaSonya Leggett of Walker Springs, and Debra (Jerry) Nettles of Carlton; sister, Rosa Washington of Austin, Texas; brother, Curlee (Shirley) Leggett of Pittsburgh, Pa.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Saturday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home in Jackson. Viewing will be one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Hotel Hill Cemetery
in Walker Springs.
Mamie Lee Patton
Mamie Lee “Nannie” Patton, 80, a native of Walker Springs and a resident of Jackson, died Dec. 3, 2006 at Springhill Memorial Hospital in Mobile. A retired domestic, she was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church in Walker Springs and a former choir member. She is preceded in death by her parents, Aro McLeod Holley and James Milton Holley.
Survivors include a son, Charles Edward Williams of Jackson; daughter, Gloria Jean (Eddie) Johnson of Jackson; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Saturday, Dec. 9, 11 a.m. at St. Luke Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby White, pastor and eulogist. Viewing will be on Friday, Dec. 8 at Andrews Funeral Home in Jackson from 2-4 p.m. A second viewing will be conducted one hour prior to funeral service. Burial will be in the Hotel Hill Cemetery
in Walker Springs.
James H. Brown Sr.
James H. Brown Sr., 77, a resident of Gatlinburg, Tenn. and formerly of McIntosh, died Dec. 7. 2006. He retired after 32 years of service as a control chemist for Ciba Specialty Chemical in McIntosh. A member of McIntosh Baptist Church, he served as a deacon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in the special training regiment of the 8th Infantry Division. Agraduate of Auburn University and an avid War Eagle fan, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. While in Gatlinburg he was an active member of Roaring Fork Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was preceded in death by his father, John Thomas Brown and mother, Kitty Faye Wheeler Brown.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Vassar Stoker Brown of Gatlinburg; two sons, James H. Brown Jr. and Jeffrey W. (Dawn) Brown, all of Chatom; three daughters, Joni Brown (Tim) Perley of Birmingham, Jamie Brown (Tim) Gunn of Mobile and Kitty Jane Brown (Raymond) Law of Long Valley, N.J.; brother, Thomas Raymond (Wanvis) Brown of Mobile; sister, Joyce M. Warren (Walter Bueg) of Millry; 11 grandchildren and many other relatives.
The funeral service was Dec. 11 at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom with the Rev. Alvin Tucker officiating. Interment was in the Richardson Cemetery.

Billy Calhoun Odom
Billy Calhoun Odom, 84, died Dec. 5, 2006 at Jackson Medical Center. He was a native of Grove Hill and the son of the late Bettye Calhoun Odom and Henry Bowen Odom. He was a graduate of Clarke County High School and attended the University of Alabama. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic based in Liverpool, England. After the war, he worked for the telephone company in Jackson where he boarded with Mrs. Naomi Warren. She introduced him to Helen McGowin and they were married on Oct. 17, 1947 in the parlor of the Old Warner Home in which he was still residing. A member of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson, he was a long-time member of the Jackson Volunteer Fire Department and a mason in the Santa Fe Lodge No. 226. He retired from Boise Paper after many years of service.
He is survived by daughter, Susan Odom McCorquodale of Tuscaloosa; son, Billy Calhoun (Cindy Daugherty) Odom Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren, Martha Virginia McCorquodale (David) Stewart, Mary Helen McCorquodale (Aidan) Marks and William McGowin Odom; great-grandson, William David Stewart, sister-in-law Martha McGowin, and long-time friend and companion, Johnny Dowling, who was like a son to him.
Memorial services were conducted at the First United Methodist Church in Jackson on Dec. 9 with the Rev. Jim Dufriend and the Rev. Joe Ed Hastings, cousin of the family, officiating. A private burial was held at Pinecrest Cemetery
with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
Jimmy Curtis Franks
Jimmy Curtis Franks, 25, died Dec. 10, 2006 in an automobile accident. He was employed at Millry Saw Mill.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Lee Franks of Yarbo; four sisters, Tracy (Orlando) Morse and Janet E. Franks, all of Tuscaloosa, Della (Kenneth) Rodgers of Yarbo and Alliyah (Willie) Boykin of Leroy; three brothers, Calvin (Cassandra) Franks of Chatom, Willie L. Franks and Marcus A. Franks, both of Yarbo; grandparents, Johnnie Mae and Vester Turner of Yarbo and Carrie Hurd of Barlow Bend.
The funeral service will be Dec. 16 at King Chapel Baptist Church of Yarbo at 2:30 p.m. Viewing will be one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Payne Hamilton Cemetery
in Millry with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Gloria Jean Jackson Gloria Jean Jackson, 46, of Manila, died Dec. 10, 2006 at her residence. A member of Little Burrah Baptist Church in Manila, she served as assistant church secretary. She was employed with Guardsman as a security guard at Boise and at Church’s Chicken, both in Jackson. She was a 1978 graduate of Jackson High School.
Survivors include a son, Kendrick (Krystal) Jackson of Jackson; father, Maxcina Wright of Manila; four sisters, Karen (Quincy) Brooks of Manila, Veda (Gray) Young of Whatley, Shandra Wright and Sharanda Wright, both of Manila; three brothers, Rickey (Sharon) Wright of Los Angeles, Calif., Michael Wright of Manila and Cyrus (Gloria) Wright of Alma. Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at Little Burrah Baptist Church in Manila. A second viewing will be one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the church. Interment will be in the Rohden Cemetery
in Manila with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Robert Aaron Bozeman Sr.
Robert Aaron Bozeman Sr., 80, a native and resident of St. Stephens, died Dec. 10, 2006 at his home. AWorld War II veteran, he was retired from Ciba-Geigy as a chemical operator. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Stephens and the Mobile Country Music Association. Afiddler who taught many the fine art, he won many titles and awards.
He is survived by his wife, Alpha Mae Bozeman of St. Stephens; son, Robert Aaron Bozeman Jr. of St. Stephens; three daughters, Elaine B. (Norman) Green, Charlene B. Green and Joyce B. (Larry) Allday, all of Jackson; stepson, Joe Hicks of St. Stephens; two stepdaughters, Sharon Smith of Grove Hill and Adra Dungan of Jackson; sister, Irma Jean Moseley of St. Stephens; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren.
The funeral service was Dec. 13 at the First Baptist Church in St. Stephens. Interment was in the church cemetery with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers were Marcus Green, Chris Tompkins, Danny Green, Jeremy Allday, Jason Allday, Aaron Bozeman, Carey Slayton and Adam Napper.
Honorary pallbearers were J.B. Reed, Douglas Atchison, Bill Dreading, Earl Shewmake, Melvin Farmer, Dr. David Warren, Hometown Hospice nurses and band members of the Mobile Country Music Association.
Katherine Watt Hart
Katherine Watt Hart, a former resident of Jackson, died Nov. 26, 2006 at the age of 91.
Funeral services were Nov. 29 at the First United Methodist Church in Montgomery with Leak-Memory Chapel directing. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Dunham Hart Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Hart Rainey (R. Reese); a son, William Dunham (Beth F.) Hart; two sisters, Carol Watt (Wilbur T.) Simpler and Edna Watt (Gabriel) Spinelli; four grandchildren, Julia Hart Manning, Caroline Hart Dixon, Lauren Hart Golinsky and Robert Reese Rainey Jr.; a great-grandson, William Scott Manning and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund in Montgomery.
Minnie Lucille Alsobrooks
Minnie Lucille Alsobrooks, 94, died Dec. 13, 2006 at her residence in McIntosh. Anative of Carlton, she was a retired seamstress for Vanity Fair and a member of the First Baptist Church in McIntosh.
She is survived by a son, William H. Alsobrooks of McIntosh; daughter-in-law, Constance Fletcher Alsobrooks of McIntosh and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was Dec. 15 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Interment was in McIntosh United Methodist Cemetery.
Delores G. Hoven
Delores G. Hoven, a resident of Jackson, died Dec. 19, 2006 at a local hospital at the age of 76. She was a retired co-owner of Hoven’s Auto Sales in Jackson and a member of Stave Creek Baptist Church in Jackson. She enjoyed sewing and baking and was affectionately known as the “Angel Lady” by her friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jan L. Wood.
Survivors include her husband, Coma “Pee Wee” Hoven of Jackson; son, Marty Hoven of Demopolis; daughter, Susan Milstead of Jackson; sister, Louise Potrykus of Michigan; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 22, 1 p.m. at Stave Creek Baptist Church until time of funeral at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Maloy officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
