Anderson
Walter Page Anderson, 86, died June 3, 2006 at a local health care facility. AU. S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired security guard with Dumas Brothers Manufacturing, he was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Jackson.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Louise Woodyard Anderson of Jackson; daughter, Janice A. (Mitch) Linton of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Franklin Anderson of Jackson; sister, Molly Gibbs of Mobile; two grandchildren, Blaine and Blake Linton of Jacksonville.
The funeral service was June 5 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Interment was in Pine Grove Methodist Cemetery
in Leroy.
Pallbearers were Jack Trott, Luther Havard, Danny Havard, Tom Bolen, David Anderson and Craig Anderson.
Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Tillman, Todd Barnes, Richard Cook, Joe Woodyard, Joe Powell and Scott Hutchison.
Jordan
Dr. Charles H. Jordan, 71, a native and resident of Chatom, Ala., passed away on May 31, 2006.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday, June 2 at the Chatom United Methodist Church. The Rev. Andy Gartman conducted the service and Chippy Bell gave the eulogy. The graveside services were given by Dr. Leo Brannon with Andy Williams playing Taps on this trumpet at the end of the service.
Pallbearers were Benjamin Jones, Binion Jones, Larry Hubbard, Carl Craig, Frank Dickey, Mike Staten, Rickey Perkins and Glenn London.
The family would like for everyone to consider themselves to be honorary pallbearers since Dr. Charles had so many friends.
Dr. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Lee and Minnie Lou (Reed) Jordan, his brother, Robert K. (Bob) Jordan and Jessie L. Jordan Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Janie (Bumpers) Jordan and his two children, Buddy Jordan and Sherri Jordan. Dr. Charles and Ms. Janie married Dec. 23, 1956 and would have had 50 years together this coming December. Their children say it is close enough to count at being 50 years.
Dr. Charles attended Washington County High School then went on to receive a bachelor of science degree and his DMD (Dentistry) at the University of Alabama in 1963. He set up his private practice in 1965 and retired in 1997. Dr. Charles served his country in the U.S. Army for two years active duty then later served 18 years in the Alabama Army National Guard. He retired a full colonel in 1994.
He was a member of the Chatom United Methodist Church and served on the finance committee as a member and as chairman of the Administrative Board. Dr. Charles was a member of the Chatom Volunteer Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief for many years. Other clubs and organizations that he was involved in included Kiwanis Club, American Red Cross Chapter (Chairman), American and Alabama Dental Association (Life Member), Masonic Lodge (Chatom Lodge No. 740), life member of the National Rifle Association, Friends of the Washington County Chapter of the NRA, and was a ham radio operator (Call sign K4dmd).
Dr. Charles will be remembered as a unique individual with a superb intelligence. This intelligence allowed him to collect a vast knowledge on just about any subject. His hobbies included hunting (especially turkeys), ham radio, collecting old farming tools, woodworking, gun history, reading and crossword puzzles. He was well-known for his storytelling ability and would draw upon his hunting experiences for his tales. His love of humor and infectious laughter will be missed by his many friends and his family members.
Parnell
Shirley Parnell, 70, died June 4, 2006 in Atlanta, Ga. A native of Hawthorne, she was a longtime resident of Sunflower.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 8 (today), 12 noon at Sunflower United Methodist Church. She will lay in state one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
She is survived by a son, Samuel A. Henderson of Fairhope; daughter, Laura D. Blanchard of Smyrna, Ga.; brother, Leo Langford of Fairhope; sister, Emma Greenamyre of Alpharetta, Ga. and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Lee Parnell.
Payne
Rhett Goode Payne Jr., 88, a lifelong resident of Jackson, died Thursday morning, June 1, 2006. He was born in the McVay community on Oct. 16, 1917, the son of the late Rhett Goode and Eva McDonald Payne.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson where he served many years as a deacon and 27 years as an elder. He served in the Army Armored Infantry during World War II from 1942-1946 at Fort Knox, Ky. and in the European Theatre; was an expert marksman and earned the Bronze Star among others.
Payne worked at the Jackson Bank & Trust Co., was later a wholesale salesman for J.C. Stewart and Bama Auto Parts, worked for Liberty National Life Insurance Co. for 28 and onehalf years as an agent and associate manager and was district manager for the Jackson District for 12 years until his retirement in 1981.
With LNL, he made Leader's Club 11 times, qualified for 25 Torch Club Conventions and served as president one term of the Tombigbee Underwriter's Club. He was a member and officer in the Optimist Club, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Jackson Chamber of Commerce and was an avid golfer. In 1994 the Jackson Golf Association named a tournament in his honor recognizing him as one of its charter members.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean McCrary Payne of Jackson; two sons, William McCrary (Elizabeth) Payne of Birmingham and Rhett G. (Donna) Payne III of Meridian, Miss.; sister, Bernice P. Feagin of Grove Hill; five grandchildren, Laura Payne of Tuscaloosa, Frazier (Lesley) Payne of Mobile, Katy P. (Keith) Brunelle and Rhett "Chip" Payne IV, all of Meridian and Kristy P. (Sean) Buchanan of Columbus, Ga.; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was Saturday, June 3, 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson with the Rev. Daniel M. Berry, the Rev. Dr. Rhett G. Payne III and the Rev. Hughie Denton of Evergreen officiating. Burial was in the Pine Crest Cemetery
in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
The American Flag was presented to his wife by Lt. Sean Buchanan at the conclusion of the service.
Pallbearers were Frazier Payne, Chip Payne, Charles McCorquodale, Jim Bailey, Jim Cox, Leroy Mitchell, Joe Skipper and Kenny Smith.
Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Stewart, Sonny Gilmore, Otto Bostrom, Frank Barbaree, John D. McGowin, Joe Payne Lindsey, Dan Outlaw, Audrey Beech, Irwin Cooper, Reg Cooper, Hollis Cooper, Robert Evans, Ed Ford, Charlie Hamilton, Gaines Adams and Nelson Beech.
Ushers were church elders Bud Scogin, Bob Stewart and Sam Hughston. Pianist, soloist was Patricia Smith and organist, Audrey Powell.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Presbyterian Home for Children in Talladega or the William F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette.
Tillman
Minnie Rhee Tillman, 62, a native and resident of Grove Hill, died June 2, 2006 in a local hospital in Opp. She was a nurse at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital and a member of Grove Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by a brother, Willard Kinman of Jackson and two sisters, Pauline Sheffield and Virginia Courington, both of Grove Hill.
The funeral service was June 4 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill with the Rev. David Curtis officiating. Burial was in the Union Baptist Cemetery
in Grove Hill.
Weaver
Dorothy O. Weaver, a member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church in Grove Hill, died May 30, 2006 at a local facility at the age of 71. A retired seamstress with Vanity Fair Mills, she was a native of Coy and resident of Grove Hill.
She was preceded in death by grandson, Jeremey Overstreet, and great-granddaughter, Chelsea B. Carpenter.
Survivors include two sons, Willie C. Overstreet of Jackson and Nathan C. Overstreet of Grove Hill; three daughters, Laurine (Kenny) Johnson and Dorothy (Phil) Gilchrist, all of Jackson and Betty (Stevie) Gilchrist of Grove Hill; brother, Earnest Gray Sheffield of Texas; sister, Sally Ann Helms of Thomasville; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was June 2 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Burial was in the Cantuche Cemetery.
Vaughn Clayton Bradley
Vaughn Clayton Bradley, 79, died Aug. 16, 2006 in a Mobile hospital. A retired equipment superintendent for Coach Inc., he was a member of Peniel Baptist Church in Jackson.
Survivors include his wife, Earline M. Bradley of Jackson; son, Kenneth Bradley of Sanford, Fla.; two daughters, Sue Smithson of Alvin, Texas and Ronda Gordon of Jackson; four brothers, Armond Bradley and Neal Bradley, both of Jackson, Oren "Buster" Bradley of Birmingham and Henry Bradley Jr. of Saraland; three sisters, Mae McLendon and Lois Elmore, both of Jackson and Elmerline Jackson of Thomasville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was Aug. 18 at Peniel Baptist Church in Jackson with the Rev. Shannon Moses officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
