Virgie Whitfield, 84, of Sterrett died July 2, 2000. She was a housewife and longtime resident of Sterrett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herdis Whitfield and a grandson, Clay Whitfield.

She is survived by a son, Hoy Whitfield of Sterrett; a sister, Agnes Whitfield of Sterrett; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held July 5 at Kilgroe Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Eugene Howard and Rev. Harold Donald presiding. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Kilgroe Funeral Home directing.

EVELYN LOUISE MILSTEAD ALEXANDER

Montevallo resident

Evelyn Louise Milstead Alexander, 79, of Montevallo, died July 14, 2000. She was married to James Leonard Alexander for 58 years and was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Terry Killingsworth of Calera and Dedra Baker and husband, Glenn, of Clanton; two sons, Darryl Alexander and wife, Janell, of Montevallo and Keith Alexander of Brentwood, Tenn.; two brothers, Don Milstead of Calera and Hubert Milstead of Trussville; six grandchildren, Kelly Sullivan of Clanton, Laura Boggs of Montevallo, Sara Sparks of Clanton, Cory Alexander of Montevallo, Jonathan Alexander of Wilsonville and Rebecca Alexander of Wilsonville; and 10 great-grandchildren,

Services were held July 17 at Rockco Funeral Home, Rev. Robert Ethridge officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery, Rockco Funeral Home directing.

VESSIE MAE ANDERSON

Member of Beulah Baptist Church

Vessie Mae Anderson, 89, of Sterrett, died July 11, 2000.

A life-long resident of Sterrett, she was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Sterrett and, along with her husband the late Thornton J.D. Anderson, owned and operated Anderson Grocery Store.

She is survived by two sisters, Magdalene Howard of Sterrett and Doris Weldon of Pell City; a brother, James Goodwin of Sterrett; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held July 13 at Beulah Cemetery, Rev. Eugene Howard officiating. Kilgroe Funeral Home directed the services.

REV. WILLIE AVERY

Brent resident

Rev. Willie Avert of Brent died June 26, 2000, at Bibb Medical Center in Centreville.

He is survived by his daughter, Mattie Avery; a son, Jackie Avery; a sister, Inella Avery Brinkley; and a cousin, James Foster.

Services were held July 2 at Haysop Baptist Church, Rev. Samual Jones officiating. Burial was in Haysop Baptist Church, Good Shepherd Funeral Home directing.

CAROLYN "PETE" PITTS BILBRO

Member of Marvel Church of God

Carolyn "Pete" Pitts Bilbro, 81, of Bessemer, died July 12, 2000. She was a member of Marvel Church of God.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Moore of Bessemer and Patricia Daniels of Birmingham; three sisters, Barbara Bissett and husband, Frank, of Marvel, Vera Porter and husband, Don, of Bessemer and Joan Allen of Alabaster; a brother, Jake Pitts and wife, Clara, of Bessemer; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held July 15 at Rockco Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Scott Bush officiating. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery, Rockco Funeral Home directing.

WILLIAM H. BOZEMAN

Veteran of World War II

William H. Bozeman, 77, of Biloxi, Miss., died July 11, 2000, in Biloxi.

A native of Columbiana and a resident of Biloxi since 1949, he was a veteran of World War II in the Army Signal Corps. He was retired Civil Service as an instructor supervisor with 35 years of service. He was active in the Heart Association, Boy Scouts, and PTA, at both the states and local levels. He volunteered with the Mississippi Highway Patrol to do maintenance on their radar equipment in the early 1950s. He also was a Master Mason, York Rite, Scottish Rite, a Shriner and a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Floyce Bozeman of Biloxi, Miss.; a daughter, Joan Hendrix of Tallahassee, Fla.; three sons, W. Steve Bozeman of Pace, Fla., W. David Bozeman of Houston, Texas, and W. Michael Bozeman of Biloxi, Miss.; four sisters, Flora Foster, Sarah Walton, Mildred Baldwin and Mary Russell, all of Shelby County; two brothers, Jack Bozeman of Shelby County and Howard Bozeman of Denver, Co.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held 13 at Our Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Burial was in Southern Memorial Park, Bradford OKeefe Funeral Home directing.

JAMES GRADY CASH

Montgomery resident

James Grady Cash, 97, of Montgomery, died July 15, 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys K. Cash of Montgomery; sons, James Cash of Augusta, Ga., Jess Knighton of Las Vegas, Nev. and Roy Knighton of Center Point; a daughter, Jeanette Bell of Montgomery; six grandchildren, Kevin Cash, Karen Cash, Gail Newburn, Terry Lee Prater, Ronnie Knighton and Jay Anna Dill; and seven great-grandchildren, Meredith Barnes, Breanna Barnes, Daniel Grady Barnes, Rachel Dill, Noel Dill, Josh Dill and Jeremy Couch.

Graveside services were held July 18 at Columbiana City Cemetery, Leak Memory Chapel directing.

JAMES EDWARD DAILEY

Florida resident

James Edward Dailey, 69, of Panama City, Fla. died July 13, 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Ola Dailey; two sons, Stephen Dailey of Alabaster and Timothy Dailey of Birmingham; two daughters, Sherry Stiles and Lisa Gartner, both of of Panama City, Fla.; father, Andrew Dailey of Montevallo; brother, Roger Dailey of Montevallo; and a sister, Sherrill Whattey of Birmingham.

Services were held July 16 at Charter Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery, Charter Funeral Home directing.

HENRY CLAY GRIFFIN

Veteran of World War II

Henry Clay Griffin, 80, of Atlanta, Ga., died July 12, 2000.

A 1941 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering, he was retired from Southern Bell with 26 years of service as a district manager for radio and microwave engineering for Georgia. He was a veteran of World War II and an Army officer, serving in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Wills Griffin.

He is survived by his daughter, Claire Griffin Kimbrell of Atlanta, Ga.; sons, Clay Gibson Griffin of College Station, Texas, Brigadier General Robert Houston Griffin of Ft. Thomas, Ky., Robert Lewis Griffin III of Columbus, Ga., John William Griffin of East Point, Ga., and James Edward Griffin of Watkinsville, Ga.; a sister, Claire Jelin of Glendale, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.

Services were held July 15 at Spring Hill Chapel, Rev. Jim Powell officiating.

Burial was in Montevallo Cemetery, H.M. Patterson and Son Spring Hill Chapel directing.

ORA B. HAMILTON

Shelby resident

Ora B. Hamilton, 87, of Shelby, died July 9, 2000.

She is survived by her son, Roy Hamilton of Columbiana; two daughters, Betty Higgins and Peggy House, both of Shelby; a sister, Lois Burnett; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held July 12 at Bolton-Brown Chapel, Rev. Biddle Nelson officiating.

Burial was in New Shelby Cemetery, Bolton-Brown Service directing.
