Kenneth G. Picha
1925-2004
Memorial services for Dr. Kenneth G. Picha, 79, of Auburn will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church of Auburn. Dr. Frank Covington will officiate.
Dr. Picha died Sept. 6, 2004. He was born July 24, 1925, in Cicero, Ill. He received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1946, through the Navy's V-12 program and was immediately commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. After six months of active duty he returned to Georgia Tech and received his master of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1948. After serving as an instructor at Georgia Tech, he attended the University of Minnesota, and was awarded the Ph.D in 1957.
A professional educator for most of his career, Dr. Picha was a professor and subsequently the director of the school of mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech until 1966. He moved to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst where he served as the dean of engineering until 1976 when he left to accept an interim position as the director of university programs at the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (a predecessor agency to Department of Energy). He returned to the University of Massachusetts to serve as director of the Energy Office until 1980, when he resumed full-time teaching until his retirement in 1989. Early in his career, he served as assistant program director, and later, director of the Engineering Sciences Program of the National Science Foundation.
He also had extensive international experience. For several months he was a consultant to the government of Singapore for the planning of a new engineering school, including facilities and recruiting faculty. In another position he was an exchange professor and consultant to the Office of the Chancellor University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Prior to his retirement he was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, assisting in industrial relations through the University College, Galway, Ireland.
He was extensively involved in engineering education professional organizations. He was a chairman of the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE) Projects Board, served on the board of directors of the ASEE's Engineering Research Council, was chairman of the Commission on Education for Engineering Profession for the National Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities, and for more than 15 years served as a Visitor Engineer's Council for Professional Development. He was a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASEE, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a constituent fellow of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Kenneth Picha also served as a volunteer in the community, having been a member of the planning commission for one community, serving as a member of the Rotary Club in two communities, and being actively involved as a member of First Presbyterian Church in different capacities.
He is survived by his wife, Vivien Picha of Auburn; one daughter, Katrina Boedeker of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sons, Ken Picha Jr. of Burke, Va., and Kevin Picha of Ft. Collins, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Young, Kevin and Kent Boedeker and Meghan, Kallan, Bernie and Kyle Picha.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church, 143 East Thach Ave., Auburn, AL 36830.

Lena Viola Saffold Bryant

Funeral services for Lena Viola Saffold Bryant, 85, of Alexander City will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Radney Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Earl Gordon will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004.
Mrs. Bryant died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Russell Medical Center. She was born June 16, 1919, in Goodwater to Maron and Emma Jones Saffold. She worked as a spinner at Russell Corp. and was a member of Comer Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting and loved the outdoors and flower gardening.
She is survived by one daughter, Shelia Mitchell of Alexander City; two grandsons, John William McDaniel of Alexander City and Ronnie Wayne McDaniel and wife Melinda of Kellyton and one sister, Pauline Prophitt of Alexander City.

Ever Lee Knight

Funeral services for Ever Lee Knight, 94, of Alexander City will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Ridge Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Leory Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Old Friendship Cemetery
in Ourtown.
Mrs. Knight died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at her residence. She was born March 29, 1910, in Elmore County to Herrit "Bud" and Lessie Hall Knight. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by eight daughters, Lee Annie Edwards, France Calhoun and Kathryn Knight, all of Alexander City, Claudine Jones and husband Shadrick of Hissop, Sarah Burns, Dorothy Knight, Frankie Knight and Billie Davis, all of Alexander City; four sons, M.J. Knight and wife Mary, and Elzie Knight, all of Alexander City, James Knight of Troy, Carey Knight and wife Saberina of Alexander City; 40 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; 44 great-great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Harold Lewis Dunn Sr.

Funeral services for Harold Lewis Dunn Sr., 72, of Alpine will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Curtis and Son North Chapel. The Rev. James J. Camp and Billy Epperson will officiate. Burial will follow at Midway Memorial Gardens in Talladega. Visitation began at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004.
Mr. Dunn died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Coosa Valley Medical Center in Sylacauga. He was a former soldier in the Air Force, courageously serving a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He earned the Korean Service Medal, the U.N. Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a kind and loving man who enjoyed telling good jokes and dancing until the sun came up. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Ladonia Jean Epperson Dunn of Alpine; four daughters, Sandra Dunn Hughes and husband Mark of Arizona, Veronica Dunn Cooper and husband Douglas of Alpine, Deborah Dunn Frost of Anniston and Tammie Dunn Medley and husband Tracy of Alexander City; two sons, Harold L. Dunn Jr. and wife Frances of Dadeville and L. Steven Dunn and wife Kelli of Sylacauga; two step-daughters, Angela Hamlin of Alpine and Melissa Hamlin Whitehead of Sylacauga; one step-son, John Hamlin and wife Mary Beth of Munord; his step-mother, Irene Dunn of Sylacauga; seven granddaughters, Lacey Dake, Brittany Grimes, Angel Hamlin, Felicia Hamlin, Cayla Whitehead, Erika Hamlin and Jessica Hamlin; 11 grandsons, Lewis Engle, Andrew Engle, Steven Ray Grimes, Justin Carrico, Richard Carrico, Jason Frost, Christopher Medley, Sean Medley, Dylan Dunn, Ethan Dunn and Clayton Hamlin: four great-grandchildren, Nicholas Engle, Candice Dake, Colton Hamlin and Maggie Hamlin; four sisters, Chris Jinks of Alpine, Dean McCall of Sylacauga, Retta Stubblefield of Childersburg and Denise Castleberry of Sylacauga and one brother, Jerry Dunn of Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his mother, Madge Deason Dunn; his father, Henry Lester Dunn; his brother, Gordon Dunn; his first wife, Ida "Chickie" Paradi Dunn; twin grandsons, Christopher and Michael Engle and grandson, Anthony Brown.

Funeral services for William Earl Whitehead, 57, of Prattville formerly of Alexander City will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004 at Ray Community Baptist Church. Rev. Jim Whorton, Rev. Albert Pike and Rev. Glenn Graham, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Prattville Memorial Chapel Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004 and one hour prior to service Friday, Oct. 29, 2004.
Mr. Whitehead died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004 at his residence. He served his country as a veteran of the United States Army and was the recipient of several commendations including two Purple Hearts.
He is survived by his wife, Nelda Whitehead of Prattville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Andy Watson of St. Mary's, Ga., Brenda and Daniel Reid of Prattville; six grandchildren, Taylor Watson, Peyton Watson, William Watson, Logan Watson, Morgan Reid and Sara Grace Reid; one sister, Melba Salter and husband Edwin, of Alexander City, one brother, Robert Whitehead and wife Betty, both of Gainesville, Fla.; and special friends Charles M. Mason, James Ray Horton and Rickie Davis.

Mr. Edwards died Nov. 10, 2004 at Russell Medical Center. He was born March 18, 1970 in Coosa County, Alabama to Janice Edward Pearson and Therman Glenn.
He is survived by mother Janice Edwards Pearson, Goodwater; father Therman (Denise) Glenn, Reading, Pa.; eight sisters Amy and Bobby Crawford and Janet and husband Nicklos Whetstone, all of Goodwater, Cassandra Glenn and Carlotta Glenn, both of Alexander City, Kayla Glenn of Reading, Pa., Heather Hutchin, Tanvia Hutchin, and Regina Hutchin, all of York, Pa.; brothers Gary and wife Anita Edwards of Kellyton, James and wife Cathy Edwards of Chattanooga, Tenn. and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Whaley died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004. He was born July 6, 1958, to Cary Carlton Whaley and Carolyn Sue Carlisle Whaley.
He is survived by his mother, Carolyn Sue Whaley of Alexander City; one son, Kenneth Cole Whaley of Birmingham; one sister, Susan Whatley and husband William of Alexander City; one nephew, Billy Whatley of Alexander City; one niece, Suzanne Whatley; special friends, Sylvia Woodard, Christopher Callahan Jr., Brittany Callahan, Nikki Woodard of Arab.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Carlton Whaley and his grandparents, Cole and Alva Carlisle.
Pallbearers will be Joel Flournoy, Brad Russell, Carmen Speaknan, Randy Morris, Kenneth Cole Whaley and Josh Bruce.

Funeral services for Mandy Bentley Thornell, 91, of Alexander City were at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 27, 2004 at Flint Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Kennington officiated. Visitation was Friday, November 26, 2004 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thornell died on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004 at Chapman Healthcare Center. She was born March 30, 1913 in Clay County to George Washington Lowery and Lucy Elizabeth Heath Lowery.
She is survived by two daughters, Magdalene Bentley Mallory and her husband, Joe, Rowena Bentley Grant and her husband Kenneth, all of Alexander City; one son, Shelby Bruce Bentley and his wife, Yvonne of Dadeville; one brother, Therby Frances Lowery of Talladega; one sister, Essie Mae Finch of Oxford; one adopted sister, Eva Lee Crawford of Oxford; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emmett Heflin Bentley; one daughter, Geneva Gail Bentley; one son, Nathan Heflin Bentley; one daughter in law, June McCord Bentley; two grandchildren, three brothers and four sisters.
