DUPREE

Services for Ray Allen Dupree, 62, were at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in the chapel of Folsom Funeral Home. Rev. James Owens officiated.

Mr. Dupree died April 13 at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Dupree; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Stacy Hastert of Piedmont; a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Brian Donaldson of Piedmont; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Perry and Deborah and Mack Logan and three grandchildren, Gary Hastert, Victoria Donaldson, and Tristan Donaldson.

Mr. Dupree was born Aug. 15, 1945, the son of the late Grady and Edna Deaton Dupree of Piedmont. Two brothers Paul Dupree and Roy Dupree, two sisters, Edith Dupree and Juanita Lewis also preceded him in death.

Prior to his retirement he was employed as a truck driver.

Memorial donations can be made to the Piedmont Rescue Squad.

GOSS

William Ralph Goss, Sr., 61, died April 13 at his home.

Survivors include two sons, William Ralph “Bill” Goss, Jr., and Chad William Goss of Piedmont; six sisters, Ann Hill and Brenda Whorton, of Centre, Eva Barnwell and Janice Shell of Piedmont, Carol Martin of Jacksonville and Wanda Hobson, of Cedartown, Ga.; a brother, Alvin Goss of Piedmont; a grandson, Chase Goss and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Goss enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and helping people. He served his country in the Vietnam Conflict.

His father William Hol Goss, his mother Marylee Hazel Smith Goss, and a brother Robert Goss preceded him in death.

RUSH

Graveside services for Elsie Rush, 85, were at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Highland Memorial Park in Knoxville, Tenn. Rev. Gary Black officiated. Thompson Funeral Home directed.

Mrs. Rush died April 15 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Gary Black of Piedmont; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Barry Phillips of Hightstown, N.J. and Dennis and Cathy Rush of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, Jason Black, Heather B. McDivitt and her husband Daryl, Deborah Phillips, Cynthia Phillips, Mark Phillips, Andrew Rush and Susan Rush; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Rush was born Feb. 27, 1923 in Hellier, Ky., the daughter of the late Noah and Sarah Wallace. She lived most of her life in Kentucky and New Jersey. She had been a Piedmont resident for the past five years. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith. Her husband Earl E. Rush, her parents, and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Memorial donations can be made to the Piedmont Educational Trust, Superintendent of Education, Piedmont City Schools, P.O. Box 232, Piedmont 36272.

SMITH

Services for Mackenzie Lynn Smith, age 4 months, were at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in the chapel of Folsom Funeral Home Revs. Tommy Ballew and John Childs officiated. Burial was in Piedmont Memory Gardens.

Mackenzie died April 16.

Survivors include her parents, David Smith and Amanda Messer; her grandparents, Jeannie Messer and Edward Smith and Forrest and Marie Smith; her great-grandparents, Brenda Estes, Jerry Lane Kiser, Charles Eugene Fortenberry, Larry and Myrtis Atkins and Lucille Daughtery; several aunts and cousins.

Pallbearers were Jerry Major Kiser and Bryan Smith.

Mackenzie was born on Dec. 7 in Jacksonville. Her great-grandfather Jimmy Messer, an aunt Debra Kirkpatrick and her namesake Jaclyn Mackenzie Hooper preceded her in death.

MAJ. (RET.) BILLY JOE BUTTRAM

Maj. (ret.) Billy Joe Buttram of Albuquerque, N. M., formerly of Piedmont, died Sunday, April 20.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; two sons; two daughters and a sister, Marvagene Buttram Allen of Piedmont.

His parents Lee Roy and Una Buttram and a sister Doris Buttram Phelps preceded him in death.

Maj. Buttram retired from the Air Force in 1971.

JIMMY RAY MAHAN

Memorial services for Jimmy Ray Mahan, 63, of Anniston were at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 26, in the chapel of Gray Brown-Service Mortuary. Rev. Wayne Sims officiated.

Mr. Mahan died April 23 at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include a stepson, Johnny Evans and his wife Rita of Piedmont; a stepdaughter, Tabatha Key and her husband, Richard “Big Rick” of Oxford; five grandchildren, Johnny Evans Jr., Jerry Evans, Shaunda Moss and her husband David, Susan Evans and Chasity Harrellson and her husband Shane; five great-grandchildren, Serena Moss, Sasha Evans, Clint Evans, Rachael Evans and Katherine Evans; a great-great-grandson; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Martha Mahan of Weaver; a special sister-in-law and caregiver, Shirley Noah Mahan; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mahan was retired from Bynum and Anniston Roofing and Siding. His wife Mary Mahan, his parents Jimbo and Velma Mahan, two brothers Herschel Mahan and J.V. Mahan and a sister Emma Lou Smith preceded him in death.

SARAH ANN MORROW

Services for Sarah Ann Morrow, 70, were at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Rabbittown Baptist Church. Rev. Bill Murray officiated. Burial was in Rabbittown Cemetery. K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center directed.

Mrs. Morrow died April 25 at her home.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Morrow Mitchell of Piedmont; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg B. and Cindy Morrow of Piedmont; a sister, Gaye Miller of Hammond, La.; a brother, Daniel F. Cheatwood of Piedmont and three grandchildren, Kyle Morrow, Elizabeth Mitchell and Carsyn Morrow.

Pallbearers were nephews Phillip Eidson, Steve Cheatwood, Kenneth Upchurch, Jeff Miller, Mike Morrow, Mitchell Upchurch, Stephen Ellis, David Morrow and Jordy McMahan. Honorary pallbearers were the Southern Custom Exhibits family, Scott Sirmon, Laurence Thomas, Ed Spilman, Derrick Palmer, Floyd Green, John Lee, Ricky Doss, Dennis Burrage, Michael Moore, Alejandro Castillo, Bill Farkas, and Keith Silvers.

Mrs. Morrow was a member of Rabbittown Baptist Church. She was co-founder of Southern Custom Exhibits and retired from Federal-Mogul. Her husband Elvin H. Morrow, her parents Brock and Lizzie Cheatwood, a sister Carol Upchurch, a brother, Wallace Cheatwood, and a niece Susan Upchurch preceded her in death.

Memorial donations can be made to White Plains Community Sports, Inc., 1416 Commerce Blvd., Anniston 36207.

ARCHIE D. McCARLEY

Services for Archie D. McCarley, 62, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home. Gary McCurdy and Rev. William Cain will officiate. Burial will be in Gnatville Cemetery.

Mr. McCarley died April 26 at his home.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Angie and Greg McCurdy of Ballplay and Yvette and Henry Reynolds of Gnatville; a son, Mark McCarley of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Morgan McCurdy, Colton McCurdy and Caitlin Reynolds; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Edna Stancil and Lois Goodwin of Jacksonville, Jean and Gerald Brown of Piedmont and Lucille Rose of Michigan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Betty McCarley and Jerry and Gay McCarley all of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Colton McCurdy, Greg McCurdy, Ted McDowell, Eddie Farmer, Gary Hardin and Rodney Parris.

Mr. McCarley was a Calhoun County native and had been a Piedmont resident for the past 41 years. He attended Roy Webb School and was a graduate of Ayers Technical College. He served as an air policeman in the United States Air Force and was a retired electrician.

His wife of 41 years, Janice Hulsey McCarley, preceded him in death.

GARRY LEE CARTER

A military service for Garry Lee Carter, 59, was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home. Revs. Charles Jarrells and John Adams officiated.

Mr. Carter died April 28 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dusty and Bryan Smith of Greenwood, Ark., and Wendi and Danny Curtis of Charleston, Ark.; a sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Lathan King of Piedmont; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen and Joyce Carter and Loyal and Judy Carter of Piedmont and Lavanual and Margaret Carter of Centre; five grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Kayla Smith, Danielle Curtis, Dalton Curtis and Matthew Curtis and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Thomas Cain, David Trammell, Ronnie Carter, Kevin Pierce, Jason Scogin, Danny Curtis, Bryan Smith and Morris Burns. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Fortenberry, members of his Sunday school class at Piedmont Church of God and the residents he visited at Piedmont Health Care Center.

Mr. Carter was a resident of Arkansas for 20 years before returning to Piedmont. He was a member of the Piedmont Church of God, a United States Army veteran, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Metal and was a sharpshooter. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and the outdoors and later in life he enjoyed visiting the residents at the nursing home. His parents Woodrow and Audrey Carter and a sister Phillis Carter preceded him in death.

BEN H. FRADY

Services for Ben H. Frady, 70, were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Dr. Harvey Brown and Rev. Lewis Bowen officiated. Burial was in Anniston Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Frady died unexpectedly April 20 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Juanita Frady of Anniston; two daughters and a son-in-law, Melissa Ann and Gary Curl and Sherrie Frady all of Birmingham; two grandchildren, Matthew Carter Curl and Olivia Lauren Curl and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Danny Cark, Gary Cable, Gary Allen Cagle, Albert Cagle, Robert Freeman and Roy Bearden. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men’s Bible Class of Hill Crest Baptist Church.

Mr. Frady was a native of Piedmont and attended Piedmont High School where he was a varsity cheerleader. He retired from retail management and worked for over 45 years, including 27 years with Big B Drugs, Rite Aid, S & H Kress and Jacobs Drugs in Atlanta. His parents, Ben H. Frady Sr. and Lettie Ann Weddington, preceded him in death.

He served in the National Guard Reserve. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Georgia and an active member at Hill Crest Baptist Church and the Men’s Bible Class for over 25 years. He enjoyed Braves baseball, Alabama football, going to the beach with his family, having coffee and conversation with his friends and spending time with his grandchildren.

BETTY HOGUE

Services for Betty Hogue, 78, of Tuscaloosa were at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home. Dr. Herbert Thomas officiated. Burial was in Memory Hill Gardens. Memory Chapel Funeral Home officiated.

Mrs. Hogue died April 29 her home.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Phillip Willis of Bessemer; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglass E. and Marleni Hogue Jr. of Jacksonville; a sister, Loraine Howard of Ohatchee and two grandchildren, Kevin Hogue of Piedmont, and Kristi Mowlin of Hamilton.

Honorary pallbearers were members of Circlewood Baptist Church, former members of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, Clara Blackman, No. 167 O.E.S., doctors and staff of DCH Cancer Treatment Center, Hospice of West Alabama, doctors, Leonard W. Jones III, Howard J. Falgout, A. George Kudirka, and Robert Wright, Doris Woodard, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Junkin, U and A Gate Management personnel, and U of A.

Her parents Clarence Bentley and Bertha Bentley, a daughter Donna Elaine Hogue, a son John Keith Hogue and her husband Douglas E. Hogue preceded her in death.

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of West Alabama and American Cancer Society.
