Funeral service Wednesday for former chief of Winterboro VFD
TALLADEGA — Funeral service for James Robert Sargent, 82, will be Wednesday, Jan. 31, at noon at Usrey chapel in Talladega with the Rev. Clyde Pettus officiating. Burial will be in Winterboro Cemetery.
Mr. Sargent died Sunday, Jan. 28, at Talladega Health Care Center.
He was a native of Clay County but lived most of his life in Winterboro. A member of Winterboro Baptist Church, he was fire chief for more than 10 years of the Winterboro Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Winterboro Quarterback Club, and was retired from Bemis Brother Bag Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine G. Sargent; a sister, Leola Early; and a brother, Donald Sargent.
He is survived by daughter, Diane Gaither and husband Terrell of Talladega; sons, Wayne Sargent and wife Rita of Talladega and David Sargent of Lincoln; grandchildren, Eric Gaither, Becky Nunis and husband Jerry, Todd Gaither and wife Lynn, Brian Sargent, Clayton Sargent and wife Jamie, Anna Marie Sargent, and Peyton Couey; great-grandchildren, Michael and Austin Walters, Jorden Nunis, and Abygail Gaither; three sisters, Emma Jean Harkins of Goodwater, Fannie Harkins of Alexander City, and Maggie Robinson of Ashland; and two brothers, Hubert Sargent of Springville and Arnold Sargent of Moody.
Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Sargent, David Sargent, Eric Gaither, Todd Gaither, Brian Sargent and Jerry Nunis.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Winterboro Volunteer Fire Department, all other volunteer fire departments, Brenda and Rickey McCain, Beverly and Butch Bolton.
The family specially thanked to Dr. Andrew Huany, the staff at Talladega Health Care Nursing Home, and Wiregrass Hospice staff, Lisa, Linda, and Iris.

SYLACAUGA - Funeral service for J.D. Edwards, 84, was Monday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church with the Rev. Brandon Stripling officiating. Burial was in Midway Memory Gardens. Mr. Edwards died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 at Coosa Valley Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Sylacauga. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and an active member of Curtis Liner's Sunday School class. He was a veteran of World War II and an active member of the American Legion Post 45. He is survived by his wife, Millie Louise Edwards; one brother, Robert Lee Edwards Jr. of Alpine; one sister, Miriam Louise Potter of Sylacauga; two sons, Robert (Angie) Edwards and David (Susie) Edwards, all of Alpine; three grandchildren, Shani Renee Johnson, Mark Elliot Edwards and Heather Danielle Edwards; one great-grandchild, Kaleb Zander Johnson; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Vera and Robert Lee Edwards Sr. Pallbearers were Mark Edwards, Shannon Johnson, Winston Abernathy, Vernon Burkes, Frank Hammons, Johnny Harris and Jim Gentry. James Woodin officiating. Mr. Freeman passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 at Medical Center East in Birmingham. Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth Gaither Cooper Freeman of Talladega; four sons, Randy Freeman, Steve Freeman, Alan Freeman, and Bob Freeman all of Talladega; two step-sons, Marty Cooper of Talladega and Mike Cooper of Anniston; one step-daughter, Anna Marie Odham of Anniston; two sisters, Mary Lois Ingram and her husband Joe Wayne and Betty Johnson and her husband Billy; one brother, Wayne Freeman and his wife Kathy; one sister-in-law, Frankie Freeman; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Freeman is preceded in death by two brothers, Olin and Fred Freeman. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Mr. Freeman was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County. He was of the Baptist faith; was a retired Pipe Fitter and Welder and a former employee of Kimberly Clark. Todd Reaves officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Gravette passed away at Coosa Valley Medical Center Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007. She loved the Lord. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She was a graduate of Sylacauga Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1957. She enjoyed her grandchildren immensely. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, cross stitching, reading, genealogy, and the Auburn Tigers. She also gardened and collected angels and teapots. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Harlyn Gravette; son and daughter, Greg and Cindy Gravette; sisters, Elaine Roper and Christine Carden; brother, David Bailey; and parents, Stephen and Vera Bailey. She is survived by two sons, Hugh H. Gravette Jr. of Sylacauga and Bryan B. Gravette of Sylacauga; daughter, Tandy Gravette Robinson of Sylacauga; sisters, Sue B. Oakes of Wadesboro, NC and Connie B. There will be a family visitation and viewing at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Mrs. Jackson transitioned on January 28, 2007 in St. Louis, Mo. Elizabeth Garrett was born in Talladega on October 17, 1933 to Alpha Ruth Garrett and Joe Bowman. Her parents and siblings Archie Garrett and Ruthie Lee Cunningham preceded her in death. Mrs. Jackson leaves to cherish her memory her husband, the Rev. O.R. Jackson (St. Louis, MO); a daughter, Charon (Gerald) Douglass of Sylacauga; sons, Antoine (Winifred) Tucker of Lithonia, GA; Jeffery (Carla) Jackson and adopted daughter, Sherron Stockdale; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. He was a member of Mignon Baptist Church and a Veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Crayton Moncus; his wife, Ruth Keller Moncus; and one son, Thomas (Tommy) Crayton Moncus. He is survived by two daughters, Glenda M. LINCOLN - Lois Hollingsworth Morrow, age 85, left this life, Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 to meet her Savior Jesus Christ. What was faith is now sight. Born October 25, 1921 in the home in Lincoln where she lived until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.V. Morrow; parents, L.J. and Mary Stephens Hollingsworth; brothers, Vernon and Lewis Hollingsworth; and sisters, Mavis Gallups and Earline Lankford. Lois was a member of Dry Valley Baptist Church. She retired from the Talladega Superspeedway as the second person hired by Bill France, Sr. A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her son, James E. "Twerp" Morrow and wife, Reba; grandson, Clint Morrow and wife, Wendy; and granddaughter, Suzanne Morrow. Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at Dry Valley Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery with Dr. Stanley Jett and the Rev. Donnie Flynn officiating. CHARLES SANDERS
TALLADEGA - Charles Sanders, 83, Army Private, Corps of military Police Service Unit, North African Theatre, died on Sunday, January 28, 2007 at his resident in Talladega. Soon after the United States entered World War II, Mr. Sanders enlisted in the Army at the age of eighteen and served in the Second Armored Division under General George S. Patton where he fought bravely in Combat from November 8, 1942 until July of 1943. One hundred and ten enlisted men served with Charles in the company headquarters near Omon, North Africa. Eighteen men from the company survived the war. Mr. Sanders distinguished himself in battle when the Half Track armored vehicle ran over a land mine. That fateful day, Charles was scheduled to be top gunner; he was thrown out of the vehicle and lay injured for several days until the paramedics could get to him. He sustained a broken neck and back and was paralyzed from the neck down. For fifteen months, he was in a North African Hospital with a steel plate and a metal rod running through his head. Attached to the rod was two ten pound sand bags used to stabilize him in order to lessen the risk of further catastrophic spinal cord injury. Christopher Reeves, actor and activist for spinal cord injury eloquently stated that "a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles". Charles was, indeed, the hero Mr. Reeves described. Almost everyone in Talladega County seemed to know Charles. He was a consummate salesman, owning his own furniture store for a time. He always used humor and self-depravation to insure that his customers were treated with dignity and respect. He also taught his children to love and admire the curves of a finely crafted piece of furniture. His coffee drinking buddies, famously known as the "Mullygrubbers", were regulars at several restaurants around town. So famous were the Mullygrubbers that a Birmingham TV station came to Talladega to do a story on a bunch of fun-loving friends who gathered in the early hours of the morning to drink coffee and to receive fellowship that only old friends can provide. To his family, Charles was known as Daddy, Papaw, Charlie Rock, and Uncle Charlie. His wife and the entire family adored him and he them. He was always ready with a joke or a humorous story. Every now and then, he would even give you some sound advice, whether you took it or not. As Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain during World War II, so thankfully said to a world at war, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed to so few". Our family knows that sweet, mischievous, Charles was one of the elite few Mr. Churchill spoke of. Mr. Sanders was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He was a member of the VFW and lifetime member of DAV. Mr. Sanders retired in 1979 after working for Conner's Furniture and Michael's Supply Plumbing. Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife, Bonnie Sanders; two sons, Greg (Cindi) Sanders and Rickey (Sharon) Frieze, all of Talladega; two daughters, Donna (Rick) Ginn of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Brenda F. Warren of Talladega; and one brother, Robert Lilly Sanders of Talladega. Mr. Sanders has ten grandchildren, Jeff (Ashley) and Jay Ginn, Ryan and Brooke Sanders, Dustin (Brooke), Amber and Heather Phillips, Michael (Kacia) Frieze, Heather Clough, and Katie Warren. Mr. Sanders has three great-grandsons, Joshua Clough, Jared Phillips, and Kayden Cox; and one great-granddaughter, Mallory Phillips. Preceding Mr. Sanders in death were his parents, Newton Meadow and Jessie Louallen Sanders; two brothers, James Williams Sanders and Lewis Edward Sanders; and one son-in-law, Tommy Warren. Friends will be received Tuesday night from 6-9 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. Sanders will be at 3 p.m. on January 31, 2007 at Usrey Funeral Home with the Reverend Mark "Turk" Holt and the Reverend Sam Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Sanders will be honored with a full military funeral. Burial will be in Marble City Cemetery. Mrs. Anderson died Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at Sylacauga Health & Rehab. She grew up in Sycamore and Sylacauga area. She moved to Childersburg in the late 40's where she spent more than fifty years before returning to Sylacauga. She worked for 7 years at Sylacauga Garment Co. and owned a beauty shop in Sycamore for several years. She is survived by son, David Anderson of Chelsea; grandson, Jay Anderson of Childersburg; sisters Carol Dickey & husband Jim of Sylacauga and Francis Welch of Ft. Myers, Fl.; brothers, Mike Haynes of Winterboro, Ronnie Haynes of Sycamore, and Rickey Haynes of Sylacauga; nephew, Terry Mizzell of Sylacauga.
