Burial will be in Pope's Chapel Cemetery. Mrs. Bagwell died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006. She was a member of Pope's Chapel Methodist Church. in Walnut Hill, Alabama, outside of Dadeville. Mr. Downing died Saturday evening, Dec. 2, 2006 at a Birmingham hospital. He was born May 12, 1932 at Blue Creek on Lake Martin, and graduated from Dadeville High School. Charles was a member of the United Methodist Church. He served honorably in the United States Army being deployed to Berlin, Germany. His primary duty there was serving as a member of the Joint Allied Forces detail stationed at Spandau Prison, guarding war criminals who answered only to Adolf Hitler during World War II. He was retired from Alabama Power Company. He worked at Plant Gaston in Wilsonville for many years as a lab technician, yard crew foreman, and a coal handling foreman. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Willie Lee Downing of Dadeville; and his brothers, Neil Downing of Sylacauga and Richard Downing of Dadeville. He was a master Mason and a member of Dadeville Masonic Lodge No. 71 for over 50 years and was a member of Scottish Rite and Zamora Shrine Temple. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Downing; daughter, Christy Downing; son, Charles Lee (Rusty) Downing; nephews, Michael Downing, Randy Downing, and Mitchell Downing; nieces, Tammy (Brent) Puckett, Debra Dunn, and Dana McLendon; sisters-in-law, Raye (Neil) Downing and Gertie (Richard) Downing; and several grandnieces and nephews. Mr. Newman had been a resident of Opelika since 1970 and was retired from Uniroyal, Inc. with 25 years of service. Following retirement, he worked with Gene Newman Plumbing Company for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dean J. Newman in 1999. He is survived by two daughters, Mae Smith of Sylacauga and Bonnie Heath of Opelika; two sons, Jimmy (Sharon) Newman of Dadeville and Gene (Pansy) Newman of Opelika; one sister, Sarah Anne Greene of Sylacauga; 14 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren. She was a native of Clay County but lived most of her life in Talladega County. Mrs. Poe was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Poe; son, Thomas Vardaman; and parents, Freeman "Doc" and Hattie Williams. She is survived by three daughters, Betty Wilson of Talladega, Peggy Huffstetler and husband Jerry of Talladega, Jane Herrington and husband Dennis of Alpine; one brother, Fred Williams of Talladega; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
