SARAH TOMLINSON GARDNER

DOTHAN - Sarah Tomlinson Gardner, widow of Harmon Austin Gardner, Sr., and a former resident of Talladega from 1947 through 1950, passed away Oct. 10, at her residence in Dothan after a short illness. She was 93 years old. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, at First United Methodist Church, Dothan, with her pastor, the Rev. Sterling Boykin officiating. Family visitation will be for one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. Graveside services at the Falkville City Cemetery will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13. A native of Falkville, where she spent her early years, she was the daughter of Arthur Hutcheson Tomlinson and Louisa Teague Tomlinson. After graduating from Falkville High School, she received a B.A. degree in Education from Athens College, Athens. She later completed a B.S. in Home Demonstration from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, and did graduate studies in Education at MS State University & Mississippi College. Prior to moving to Dothan, Mrs. Gardner lived 43 years in Vicksburg, MS where she taught 3rd grade for 23 years. During her retirement years, she continued to be very active in her church, and many educational and genealogical organizations at the local, state, and national level. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, and MS Retired Teachers Association. Her love of family lineage and history led to her involvement with many genealogical, hereditary, and historical societies, including Magna Carta Dames, Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of the American the Revolution, MS Genealogical Society, and the Vicksburg Historical Society. Her primary focus for many years was the Colonial Dames XVII Century, where she served in many capacities including National President General. She and Harmon were active in the Vicksburg Chrysanthemum Society and judged flower exhibitions in many areas of the U.S. Mrs. Gardner is pre-deceased by her husband and parents, as well as, her brothers, Wade Tomlinson and Robert Tomlinson; and her sisters, Frances Haney and Elizabeth Mason; and a granddaughter, Julia Ann Blankenship. She is survived by her children: Austin and Doris Gardner, Auburn, Mary Lee and Van Blankenship, Talladega; and Arthur and Eileen Gardner, Dothan; and grandchildren: Marie and Bill McIntyre, Bossier City, LA; Lynn and Ed Putnam, Bogue Chitto, MS; Beth and Larry Bailey, Opelika; Jim and Ann Gardner, Eufaula; Mike and Laurel Gardner, Auburn; Buren and Luanne Blankenship, Columbus, NC; Sally and Tim Smith, Talladega; Teddy and Angie Blankenship, Madison; Alec and Lindsay Blankenship, Mobile; Wright and Karen Gardner, Atlanta, GA; and Bert Gardner, Atlanta, GA. Her surviving family includes a cousin Harold Holmes, Falkville, along with 18 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews. The family asks that her memory be perpetuated through gifts to the Colonial Dames XVII Century Scholarship Fund, or the charity of your choice. Byrd Funeral Home in Dothan will direct.

PONDA EARL SCOTT

PELL CITY - Funeral services for Ponda Earl Scott, 70, will be Friday, Oct. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Kilgroe Chapel with Bro. Dean Scott officiating. Interment will be in Roberts Mill Pond Road Cemetery. Mrs. Scott died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church; graduated from Pell City High School in 1954. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Porterfield Smith and Carlie Currie Smith; brother, James Smith; and two sisters, Frances Champion and Aileen Dunlap. She is survived by her husband, Luther J. Scott; daughters, Carla Scott-McFarland, Lori Anne Scott, Shannon Elizabeth Scott; son, Tracy Ray Scott; sister, Barbara Smith Patterson; brother, Samuel Bradford Smith; four grandchildren, Haley and Reagan Scott, Rustin and Melissa McFarland. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 12, from 6-8 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be members of the Homewood Police Department. Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the services.

SYLACAUGA - Leanna B. Whetstone, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Brookwood Medical Center. Community Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Funeral services for Bobby Cochran, 47, formerly of Talladega, will be Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church with Pastor Brian Miller and Minister Chris McKenzie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Cochran died Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Union, S.C. He is survived by father, Nem Cochran; seven sisters, Dorothy Wilson, Mary M. McKenzie, Jeannette Cochran, Jerry (Clarence) Turner all of Talladega, Bonnie Jean Robinson of Battle Creek, MI, Jerallean Crockett of Dallas, Texas, Jeneve (Willie) Levitt of Birmingham; four brothers, Samuel (Catherine) Cochran, Nem H. (Doris) Cochran, Norman (Beverly) Cochran all of Battle Creek, MI, Robert (Sherry) Cochran of San Francisco, CA; two aunts, Lucille Feaster, Mae Charles Williams both of Talladega; and a host of other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Lewis Cochran, Keith Cochran, Rodney Cochran, Parnell Turner, James Cochran, and Bu Tavis McKenzie. Sims Funeral Service will direct.

SYLACAUGA - Funeral services for Leanne Whetstone, 76, will be on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 12 noon at Victory Harbor Lighthouse Church, Sylacauga. Pastor Wayne Fowler will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Whetstone died Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Brookwood Medical Center. She is survived by six sons, Achilles B. Whetstone and Isaac Whetstone both of Sylacauga, Arthur Whetstone of Fayetteville, Herbert Whetstone of Akron, OH, Calvin Whetstone of Memphis, TN, and James Whetstone of Birmingham; six daughters, Mary Ann King and Pearlie Craver both of Sylacauga, Jewel Huntley and Vickie Crowe both of Fayetteville, Diane Cook of Goodwater, and Caroline McGraw of Birmingham; three brothers, Jewel Burns, Sherman Burns Sr., and Harry Charles Burns all of Sylacauga; four sisters, Annie Hicks and Sarah Canady of Detroit, MI, Delores Huntley of Rochester, NY, and Rosie Mae Chambliss of Sylacauga; one brother-in-law, Luther Whetstone of Childersburg; 37 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. He was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County; of Wesleyan faith; employee of Waites Concrete; avid Alabama fan and Mark Martin fan. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Phillips; grandmother, Ella Phillips; and nephew, Matthew Phillips. Interment will be in New Hope Baptist Cemetery in Dunavant. The infant passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, at University of Alabama Hospital. He is survived by his parents, Tommy and Alicia Richardson of Sylacauga; grandparents, Cary Laman of Sylacauga, Tim and Toni Franklin of Pell City, and Pearl Wheelis of Ragland; uncle and aunt, Richard and Larissa Hamilton of Sylacauga; aunt, Meagen Franklin of Pell City; and uncle, T.J. Burial will be in Midway Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Riggleman died Friday, Oct. 13, at Trinity Medical Center. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Donald Riggleman of Talladega; three daughters, Janice Gaither of Talladega, June Boyette and Ellen Miller both of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Eric, Amber, Shane, Kristy, Dusty, and Dylin; three great grandchildren, Skye, Mason, and Sarah; two sisters, Annie Brownlow of Alpine and Nell Salter of Oxford; two brothers, John Brown of Grandberry, TX and Bill Brown of Kansas City, MS.

PELL CITY—Funeral service for Robert Allen Pettis, 71, of Pell City will be Monday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hall Cemetery in Lincoln.

Mr. Pettis died Friday, Oct. 13.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Callie Pettis; two daughters, Kim Morris (Mike) of Washington, D.C., and Sherrie Ellison (Brent) of Gadsden; one son, Gary Pettis (Marlo) of Gadsden; two granddaughters, Lynsey Barron (Graham) and Christen Ellison; five grandsons, Zack Morris (Jessica), Adam Ellison, Seth Ellison, Liam Pettis and Ethan Pettis; the mother of his children, Carol Ann Pettis; five stepchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren; one brother, Donald Pettis (Jean); two sisters, Carolyn Finley (Howard) and Janice Thayer (Andrew); and several nieces and nephews.
