NEW YORK, N.Y. — Funeral services for Sam Willie Averiette Jr., 56, will be Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby L. Harris officiating. Burial will be in Sylacauga Cemetery. Mr. Averiette died Friday, February 3, in New York, New York. He was one of the first four African-Americans to attend Sylacauga High School. He was a 1967 graduate of Sylacauga High School. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Talladega College in 1971. He received his masters of science degree from Columbia University. Mr. Averiette also received his doctorate from Harvard University. He leaves to cherish his memories one sister, Shirley Buie of Birmingham; two brothers, Houston Averiette of Houston, TX, and James Averiette of Birmingham; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 10, from 3-8 p.m. at Community Funeral Home.
Pallbearers and flowerbearers will be family and friends. Community Funeral Home will direct the services.

GOODWATER — Funeral service for Ann Carter Hines Lawley, 77, will be Friday, Feb. 10, at 2:30 p.m. at Goodwater Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Cowhick and the Rev. Billy Hardman officiating. She will lie in state for one hour at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Greenview Cemetery. Mrs. Lawley passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Russell Medical Center. She was born on Oct. 14, 1928, in Sylacauga to James Roy Hines and Mildred Malissa Carter Hines. She worked as a homemaker and also was a substitute teacher in Goodwater. She was a member of Goodwater Baptist Church, where she was active in WMU, GA's, and Acteen. She was a Vacation Bible School director, Sunday School teacher, discipleship training teacher, and also sang in the choir. She was instrumental in raising money for Goodwater Library, where she served on the board. Mrs. Lawley graduated from Huntsville High School, later attended Auburn University and graduated from the University of Montevallo with a degree in English. She loved the beach, her grandchildren, brothers, and sisters, and was an avid reader and Auburn fan. She was an excellent cook. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack D. Lawley Sr.; and sisters, Zona Hines Parrish and Gwenda Hines Tickle. She is survived by her daughters, Lynn L. Hayes and husband Todd of Alexander City, LuAnn L. Lister and husband Frank of Clanton, LuCile L. Gibson and husband Bubba of Trussville; son, Jack D. Lawley Jr. and wife Deborah of Trussville; grandchildren, Jack Dunn Lawley III, Benjamin Hines Lawley, Joe Neil Gibson III, Tyler Burnham Gibson, Charles Todd Hayes III, Carter Thaxton Hayes, Vera Anjeanette Lister, and Esther Amanda Lister; great granddaughter, Jessica Elizabeth Lawley; twin brother, James Roy Hines Jr.; sister, Jean Hines Green; and a host of nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Sears Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. McDonald died Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Riverview Regional Hospital. Ruth was a member of Rockford United Methodist Church. She was born in Jackson Gap. She graduated from Childersburg High School and attended college at Montevallo. She taught at Rockford Elementary School and served as a Coosa County the Revenue Clerk and volunteer Deputy. She later worked as a teller at the City Bank of Rockford and as an ALFA Insurance Agent. She became Resident Manager at Rockwood Apartments and afterwards, at Stonegate Apartments. She also lived in Heflin, Sylacauga, Decatur, and Gadsden. She was a homemaker and served the community in such ways as school room mother, team mother, scouting volunteer, and church youth director. She is survived by a son, George Warren McDonald Jr. and wife Amy of Albertville; a daughter, Kathy Long and husband Billy of Loxley; and grandchildren, Mark, Anna, and James McDonald. She is survived by two daughters, Martha Harden and Kay (David) Stroud; granddaughter, Ashley Roberts; grandson, Jake Harden; great grandson, Ashton Roberts; and several nieces and nephews.
