Miss Lane died Dec. 27th at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Tom and Vela Lee Lane, one of Sylacauga’s most prominent families. Along with her parents, Miss Lane was active in supporting many civic projects in Sylacauga through the years.

She was a member of the Sylacauga City School Foundation Board, B.B. Comer Memorial Library Foundation Board, Marble Study Club, Magnolia Garden Club, Sylacauga Music Study Club, Sylacauga Arts Council and Chamber of Commerce. She was presently serving as president of the Sylacauga Beautification Council, and had been an active member for many years.

In 2001, Miss Lane was honored by the library foundation and board for her dedication to the expansion of the library with a Library Fellowship Award. "Her life was full," said Dr. Shirley Spears, director of Comer Library. "Her time, interest and financial help made a difference in Sylacauga. So many good organizations and charities in Sylacauga has lost a good friend and supporter."

Mary Jo Brown said Miss Lane was always dedicated to the Sylacauga Beautification Council and worked hard through the years to assist with projects to beautify the area. "She was a third generation of her family to show concern and interest in the betterment of our town and we will miss her," Mrs. Brown said. Jack and Lola Remson have worked closely with Miss Lane in the past several years on the council and said, "She will be sorely missed as a staunch supporter and a leader of the Beautification Council. She meant a lot to us with her dedicated support for the council’s projects."

"Nanellen’s mother’s death last year left a great void in her life," said longtime family friend Danny Johnson. "Nanellen was truly a great person and a wonderful friend. I’m going to miss her laughter and humor."

A 1949 graduate of Sylacauga High School, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., graduating in 1951. She continued her education at the University of Alabama’s College of Education, majoring in physical education. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

In 1965, she returned to Alabama for her master’s degree and taught physical education there for a year.

She taught at Phillips and West End high schools in Birmingham and Monroeville High School in Monroeville. For three years she coached tennis and swimming at Stephens College.

She was a member of the faculty at Mississippi State College for Women for 10 years and also taught and coached at Auburn University.

In 1977 she became the swim team coach for Sylacauga Parks and Recreation.

She was selected as an umpire at the All-England Lawn and Racquet Club in Wimbleton, England, and was listed among Who’s Who of American Women in 1971. She was named Sylacauga’s Woman of the Year in 1981.

Harry Brown, chairman of B.B. Comer Library Board, said, "The Lane family were builders of the community in Sylacauga as long as I can recall. We’ve appreciated their support through the years."
