Long-time Talladega dentist Dr. Teague dead at age 94

Dr. Alto Lee Teague Jr., a long-time dentist and resident of Talladega, died in the early morning hours of Nov. 25 at Citizens Baptist Medical Center.
Teague, 94, grew up in Ashville and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) as a 16-year-old freshman.

After earning a degree in engineering at API, he went on to complete four years of dental school at Atlanta Southern College, the forerunner of Emory University’s School of Dentistry in 1936.

During his senior year he met his future wife, Nona Long of Melbourne, Fla. The two married in June of 1938 and soon moved to Talladega.

"I had considered several towns for my practice, but Talladega impressed me every time I visited it and so I decided to settle there," Teague told The Daily Home in a past article. "I have always considered myself quite lucky in so many ways and my good luck happened again in a big way in Talladega."

For the next 44 years, Teague practiced dentistry in Talladega’s first air-conditioned building, and was never late to work one day.

"I had a big clock on the wall of my office and not one time during my 44-year career as a dentist did I ever fail to be at work when it struck the 8 a.m. hour," he said.

He also prided himself in never missing a day due to illness.

Before he retired in 1980, Teague built numerous commercial buildings throughout Talladega and was instrumental in the development of the Talladega Shopping Center on North Street.

He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Talladega.

Teague was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his son, A.L. Teague III and wife, Carole, of North Shelby County; daughter, Patricia Ann Teague Huntsville; one grandson, A. Lee Teague IV and wife, Mitzi, of Birmingham; two granddaughters, Amanda Zinn and husband, Jason, of Homewood and Kimberly Taylor and husband, Drew, of Hoover; one great-granddaughter, Katelyn Grace Zinn; a sister, Evelyn Munroe; three nieces; one great-niece and two great-nephews.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Rob Paul officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Nov. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home.
