LILA McCARLEY LOVVORN

LINEVILLE — Funeral service for Lila McCarley Lovvorn, 98, will be Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 2:30 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church in Woodland, Ala. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Lovvorn died Nov. 20 at Medical Center East in Birmingham. She was a native of Randolph County, born there Jan. 9, 1906. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Delia Cooper McCarley. She was a graduate of Auburn High School and Jacksonville State University. She and her late husband, Alton Lovvorn, taught together in Randolph County Schools for more than 40 years. They taught many years at Gantts Quarry School in Talladega County and retired in 1969 from Fayetteville. She was a devoted Christian who always looked on the positive side of any issue, with interests that centered primarily around her family. She lived most of her retirement years in Woodland near relatives, where she was a member of Zion Baptist Church and was active in the Senior Citizens Center.

In 2001, she moved back to Sylacauga to be near her daughters, Anita Dark and Pat Bivin, who loved and assisted her immeasurably during her closing years. At the time of her passing, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Sylacauga.

During her retirement, she enjoyed frequent trips with her husband and continued those with her children after her husband passed away in 1982. She continued to enjoy Auburn football, attending games past age 90 and closely following them on radio or television even while in a weakened condition prior to her death. She enjoyed the friendship and conversation with family, church members, senior citizens and neighbors and was always ready for a game of Rook, Scrabble or Dominoes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Eva Rampey; and brothers, Hoyt McCarley, Cooper McCarley, Carl McCarley, Robert McCarley and Landers McCarley.

She is survived by her daughters, Anita Lovvorn Dark and husband Ed of Sylacauga and Pat Lovvorn Bivin and husband Tom of Sylacauga; a son, Nance Lovvorn and wife Cecile White Lovvorn of Birmingham; two sisters, Mary Beth Strain and Gladys Wright; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to the building fund of Zion Baptist Church in Woodland.

Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee will direct the service.

DOROTHY JEAN COLLINS

BRONX, N.Y. — Funeral service for Dorothy Jean Collins, 59, formerly of Pell City, will be Monday, Nov. 22, at 11:30 a.m. at Rocky Zion Baptist Church with Pastor W.J. Posey of Coosa Valley Baptist Church, Vincent, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Collins died Nov. 14 at Bronx Lebanon Hospital in New York.

She is survived by her mother, Doris Collins of Pell City; two sons, Dante’ Collins of Bronx, N.Y., and Tyrone Johnson of Pell City; one sister, Sylvia Berry of Florida; one brother, William Collins of Opopka, Fla.; one special daughter, Janice Bignon of Bronx, N.Y.; four grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

Sims Funeral Home will direct the service.

KENNETH L. HARRISON

SYLACAUGA — Kenneth L. Harrison, 45, of Sylacauga died Nov. 20 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Madden’s Funeral Service.

WALLIS GENE HUNTLEY

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Wallis Gene Huntley will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Community Funeral Home chapel in Sylacauga with Brother Ralph Johnson officiating.

Mr. Huntley died Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Coosa Valley Baptist Medical Center in Sylacauga.

Community Funeral Home will direct the service.

MADELEINE MARTIN PETZNICK

Petznick, Madeleine Martin, age 94, of Pell City passed away Nov. 19, 2004.

She was a graduate of Montevallo and Massey Droughn Business Colleges with post graduate works at Huntington College.

She had a distinguished career in business with the Franklin Life Insurance Company and Turner Bonding Agency, both of Montgomery, Ala. Being active in the arts, she worked with the Montgomery Little Theater for 37 years. She loved her church, where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery.

After retirement and moving to Pell City, she continued her activities with First United Methodist Church of Pell City, as a choir member and served on the Administrative Council. Her musical talents were not only displayed in the church choir, but also in the Pell City Civic Chorus.

She is survived by her son, Dr. George Paul Petznick Jr., of Birmingham; and her sister, Margaret Louise Martin of Pell City, Ala.

She has five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many loving relatives.

Funeral service will be Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 2200 Third Ave. North, Pell City, Ala., 35125. Visitation will also be at the church on Sunday, Nov. 21, from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Pell City, Ala.

TALLADEGA — Nellie Faye Player, 54, of Talladega died Nov. 20 at Citizens Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.

ALEXANDER CITY — Linnie Mae McElrath Scott of Hopewell, Va., died Nov. 20, 2004.

ODESSA ETRESS THORNTON

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Odessa Etress Thornton, 77, will be Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home chapel in Sylacauga with the Rev. David Rozelle officiating. Burial will be in Andrews Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Thornton died Nov. 21 in Alexander City. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Isabell Etress; sisters, Onzell Bozwell and Lois Thornton; and her husband, Curtis Thornton. She was a member of Unity Free Will Baptist Church.

She is survived by sons, David H. Thornton of Sylacauga, Ray Thornton of Sylacauga and Roger D. Thornton of Vincent; daughters, Brenda Sue Davis of Albany, Ky., and Debra Ann Thornton of Sylacauga; sisters, Estelle Staten of Sylacauga, Betty Mizzell of Sylacauga and Carlene Caldwell of Sylacauga; brother, Paul Etress of Sylacauga; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be David Horace Thornton, William Ray Thornton, Roger Dale Thornton, Curtis Lee Thornton, Michael Jason Johns and Bradley Cole Thornton.

Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga will direct the service.

CHILDERSBURG — Macie M. Bandel, 93, died Nov. 23 at Coosa Valley BMC.

TERA TOWNS BURNS

PELL CITY — Funeral service for Tera Towns Burns, 81, will be Friday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. at Gray Brown Funeral Home in Anniston with the Rev. Paul Brasher and the Rev. Gary Ledbetter officiating. Burial will be in Anniston Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Burns died Nov. 23. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Odis L. Towns and Doyle Burns.

She is survived by special friend and companion, Jim Church; sons, Tim Towns (Debbi) and Ted Towns (Teressa); daughter, Tanya Towns Turner (C.O. Turner Jr.); sisters, Myra Ginn and Mildred Robinson; grandchildren, Tosya Towns Snow, Jordan Towns, Caitlan Turner, Caed Turner, Maggi Turner and Mali Turner; and great-grandchild, Madison Snow.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City.

ANNISTON — Annie Louise Cunningham, 61, died Nov. 21.

SYLACAUGA — Claude Jacobs, 78, died Nov. 23 at his residence.

SARAH S. SWEATT

RAGLAND — Funeral service for Sarah S. Sweatt, 70, will be Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home chapel in Pell City with the Rev. Wayne Arnold and the Rev. Ives Harris officiating. Burial will be in Pope’s Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Sweatt died Nov. 22 in Oneonta. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Howard "Buddy" Sweatt of Ragland; grandson, Nathan Campbell of Ragland; sisters, Annie Nolin of Cook Springs and Ruth Newton, formerly of Oxford; brothers, James Sullivan (Louise) of Springville, Ray Sullivan (Mary) of South Carolina and Jack Sullivan (Joyce) of Moody; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be David Sweatt, Steve Wells, Monte Sweatt, Jim Hawkins, Ralph Sullivan and Darrin Bice.

Usrey Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.

EUGENE TAYLOR

GOODWATER — Eugene Taylor died Nov. 22 at Lineville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Armour’s Memorial Funeral Home.

HARRY CECIL VAUGHN

Harry Cecil Vaughn was the thirteenth child and ninth son of Minnie Lee Carpenter and John Wesley Vaughn of Huntsville, Alabama. He was born February 16, 1916. He was the great-grandson of Malkijah Vaughn, one of the signers of the state constitution in 1819. He was a former resident of Guntersville, Sylacauga, and most recently Tuscaloosa.

Mr. Vaughn was a former owner of Gulf Oil stations in Guntersville and Sylacauga. He was also an agent for Liberty National Life Ins. Co. and National Life and Accident Co.

He served honorably in WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corp, Eighth Air Force, 100th Bomb Group. He flew 35 missions while stationed at Thorpe Abbot in England and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He is predeceased by his brothers and sisters: Jessie Aleno Vaughn, Ralph Earl Vaughn, Leo Ernest Vaughn, Nellie Elizabeth Vaughn Gilbreath, John Bernard Vaughn, Carl Vaughn, Grinell Vaughn, Ima Vaughn Sellers, George Washington Vaughn, Sarah Louise Vaughn Barnes, and Glenn Arnold Vaughn.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Jean Anne Sanders Vaughn, his brother, William Louis Vaughn, Huntsville, his son, Harry C. Vaughn Jr. (Diane Atkinson), Birmingham, daughters, Barbara Vaughn Davis, New York City, and Louise Vaughn Gambrell (Jack), Tuscaloosa. Grandchildren include, Leslie Vaughn Moorer (Scott), Birmingham, Captain Brian E. Vaughn (Eugenia) Sumter, S.C., Russ Gambrell, Atlanta, Vaughn Gambrell, Tuscaloosa and Mark Davis, New York City. His great-grandchildren include Meredith, Jacob, and Elizabeth Moorer, Birmingham, and Josh, Matt, and Lauren Vaughn, Sumter, S.C.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Captain Brian Vaughn, Russ Gambrell, Vaughn Gambrell, and Mark Davis, great-grandson, Jacob Moorer, Mr. Jack Gambrell, Mr. Scott Moorer, and nephew Mr. Walter Barnes.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 24 at Carr Funeral Home in Guntersville, Alabama from noon-2 p.m. Services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Carr Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Marshall Memory Gardens in Albertville, Alabama.
