ADA LOUISE BECKETT

CENTRE — Funeral service for Ada Louise Beckett, 95, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North chapel with the Rev. Jack Graves officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Sylacauga.

Mrs. Beckett died Feb. 5 at Cherokee County Nursing Home in Centre. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Russell Harwell and Ann Jordan Harwell; and children, Dustin Maddox, John Eugene Maddox, Nova Maddox Swint and Evelyn Maddox. She was a lifelong resident of the Sylacauga-Sycamore area, had lived the past 10 years in Centre and was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church. She was retired from Avondale Mills.

She is survived by one son, Bobby Beckett of Centre; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will accept flowers or donations may be made to Sycamore United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6, Sycamore, Ala., 35149.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

ELLIS RAY BURDICK

SYLACAUGA—Ellis Ray Burdick, 79, died Feb. 6 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg Chapel.

RICK BURNS

SYLACAUGA - Funeral service for Rick Burns will be Friday at noon at Community Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Rodney Looney officiating. Burial will be in Tallasahatchee Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from noon until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Community Funeral Home will direct the service.

FAYE CALDWELL

CRAGFORD — Funeral service for Faye Caldwell, 74, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Zenus Windsor and the Rev. Tommy Gene Young officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miss Caldwell died Feb. 5 at Dr. C.P. Horn Clay County Nursing Home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sisters, Alice Fargason of Cragford, Winifred Burger of Mellow Valley and Pauline Flippin of Los Angeles, Calif.; three nieces and six nephews.

Deacons of Corinth Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.

W.T. Smith will be honorary pallbearer.

The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.

Clay County Funeral Home will direct the service.

KATHERINE ROWLAND HATCHER

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Katherine Rowland Hatcher, 62, formerly of Childersburg, died Feb. 6.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Curtis and Son Funeral Home, Childersburg Chapel.

DR. GEORGE LAYTON

MONTGOMERY — Graveside service for Dr. George Layton, 80, was Jan. 29 in Ashford, Ala.

Dr. Layton, a well-known former principal at Winterboro and Childersburg high schools, died recently in Montgomery.

He had a lengthy career as an educator. Since his retirement in 1982 as assistant state superintendent for postsecondary services, he continued to contribute his time and efforts to serve the cause of public education, as well as those who served as educators. Upon retiring, Layton entered politics and was elected to the Alabama Legislature from Jefferson County.

To recognize the valuable contributions of Alabama's older citizens to the state, he introduced legislation to create the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. It was approved, and Layton was appointed a charter member ty Gov. George C. Wallace. Since 1984, he served voluntarily as vice chairman and executive secretary of the organization.

Layton is past president of the Alabama Retired Teachers Association. He earned a B.S. degree from Troy State College, an M.A. degree and a Ph.D. in school administration from the University of Alabama. He served in the Air Force during World War II as a member of the Flying Tigers in the CBI Teahter.

He entered the field of public education in Alabama in 1946. He was a teacher, coach and principal in a number of schools, including Winterboro and Childersburg.

Many area residents remember how supportive Layton was of these two schools. Becky Griffin of the Winterboro Education Foundation spoke of Layton's continuous support of Winterboro and its foundation.

He also was superintendent of Troy city and Anniston city school systems, was assistant superintendent for Birmingham city schools, coordinator of instruction for Tuscaloosa city schools, was adjunct associate professor at UAB and president of Jefferson State Junior College.

Layton is survived by his wife of 59 years, Billie Layton; two daughters, Judy Duggar of Montgomery and Diane Layton of Tuscaloosa, and three grandchildren.

ELSIE McKINNEY

LINEVILLE — Funeral service for Elsie McKinney, 88, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home chapel in Lineville with the Rev. David Holcombe and Gwinn Etheredge officiating. Burial will be in Union D. Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. McKinney died Feb. 5 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston. She was a native and resident of Munford but moved to Clay County in 1968. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, William Earl McKinney and Joe Fletcher McKinney.

She is survived by six daughters, Margie Strickland and Betty Craven of Lineville, Rebecca Harrison of Talladega, Dorothy Etheredge and Brenda Ward of Demopolis and Laura Yvonne Bell of Delta; two sons, Reese Shelton McKinney of Niceville, Ga., and Dwight McKinney of Lineville; one sister, Fannie Lola Waits of Anniston; two brothers, Harrison Smith of Pennsylvania and Travis Smith of LaFayette; 35 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Quintin Earl Strickland, David Andrew Blackmon, Robert Ernest Harrison, Theadore Lyons Etheredge, Reese Shelton McKinney Jr., Timothy LaDon McKinney, Jeffery Todd Ward and Merrell Glynn Bell.

Honorary pallbearers will be William Earl McKinney Jr., Joe Fletcher McKinney Jr., Michael Owen Blackmon, Billy Joe Blackmon Jr., Randall Wayne Harrison, George Daniel Harrison, Perry Christopher McKinney, Michael Reid Ward, Jason Dale Ward, Larry Burdett, David Burdett, Ronnie Burdett, Johnny Burdett, Horace Hurst Jr. and Timothy William Hurst.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home until service time.

Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville will direct the service.

DORA MAE LOGAN SMITH

SYLACAUGA — Private memorial service for Dora Mae Logan (Dodie) Smith will be held.

Mrs. Smith died Feb. 5. She was a resident at Spring Terrace Retirement Center in Sylacauga. She was retired from L&N Railroad Company.

She is survived by one son, James W. Shill; and daughter-in-law, Lucile Shill; four grandchildren, John Shill, Montgomery Robert Shill, Cathy Davis and Anne Cottingham of the Birmingham area; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Johns-Ridout's Southside Chapel will direct the service.

NELLIE MARIE DODD STEWART

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Nellie Marie Dodd Stewart, 90, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church with the Rev. Herman Parker and the Rev. Rick Cato officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Stewart died Feb. 5 at Sylacauga Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Stewart. She was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and was a long-time resident of Sycamore.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Eugene Stewart of Las Vegas, Nev., and James Calvin (Cooter) Stewart of Sylacauga; one daughter, Shirley Steele of Birmingham; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, Steven Thomas Sakas, Sarah Abigail McGill and her namesake, Shelby Marie Bearden.

Pallbearers will be Gene Williams, Donald Bearden, Billy Joe Luker, Sonny Bearden, Calvin Bryant and David Vickers.

The body may be viewed at the church Thursday from 10 until 11 a.m.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

JAMES WILLIFORD

SYLACAUGA — James Williford died Feb. 6 at University Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga.
