REV. HUGH ARTHUR O'BRIEN JR.
BIRMINGHAM — The Mass of Christian Burial for the Rev. Hugh Arthur O'Brien Jr., 76, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Paul with the Most Rev. David E. Foley, Bishop of the Diocese of Birmingham as celebrant.
Mr. O'Brien died Feb. 23 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his son, Kelly Joseph O'Brien (Jane) of Birmingham. He was passionately devoted to both his family and his church. He was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Homewood prior to his ordination to the Order of the Permanent Deaconate for the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama in 1975. He served the diocese actively in that ministry for 29 years. His last appointment was to the Cathedral of St. Paul, where he continued in active ministry until his death. Deacon O'Brien was member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher and past president of the Holy Name of Jesus Society, at both the parish and diocesan level. He owned Wehby-O'Brien Plumbing & Heating Company Inc., and was retired.
His body will be received at the Cathedral of St. Paul at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27. Visitation for family and friends will follow. Evening Prayer for the Dead will be prayed at 7 p.m.
He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 54 years, Betty Ann Wehby O'Brien; son, Michael Anthony O'Brien (Jan) of Talladega; daughter, Mary Elsie "Bootie" O'Brien of Birmingham; son, Charles Wehby O'Brien (Dana) of Birmingham; son, Hugh Patrick O'Brien (Shawn) of Birmingham; son, John Kevin O'Brien of Chicago, Ill., and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Michael Anthony O'Brien, Charles Wehby O'Brien, Hugh Patrick O'Brien, John Kevin O'Brien, Daniel Patrick O'Brien and Keith Marks.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation to any one of the following: St. Paul's Cathedral Capital Campaign; New Beacon Hospice; St. Francis of Assissi (Talladega) Building Fund; the Consolata Sisters; the Benedictine Sisters.

LESSIE RUTH OWENS
YONKERS, N.Y. — Funeral service for Lessie "Lette" Ruth Owens will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Darian Missionary Baptist Church in Alexander City with the Rev. Larry Shealey officiating. Burial will be in Darian Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Owens died Feb. 20 at St. John Hospital in Yonkers, N.Y. She was born Aug. 15, 1939, in Tallapoosa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Annie Daniels.
She is survived by children, Darrell Lynn Owens of Alexander City, Shelby Johnson of Yonkers, N.Y., Kerby Owens of Yonkers, N.Y., Ocie Owens of Yonkers, N.Y., and Scottie Owens of Yonkers, N.Y.; sister, Helen Holland of Durham, N.C.; brothers, Alton Daniels, Ocie Lee Daniels and Wilbert Daniels of Cleveland, Ohio, and Herman Daniels Jr. of Waco, Texas; one grandchild; and a host of other relatives.

ARGO — Graveside service for Thomas Henry Sumner, 63, was Friday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery
in Ashville with the Rev. Ronnie Venable officiating.
Mr. Sumner died Feb. 3. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Franklin Sumner; and brother, Carl J. Sumner Sr.
He is survived by daughters, Rachel K. Shinn and Rachel M. Watson; his mother, Anita Sumner; brothers, Franklin Sumner, Robert Sumner and Donald Sumner; three grandchildren; special friend, Jo Watson; and several nieces and nephews.
Ridout's Trussville Chapel directed the service.

SYLACAUGA — Myrtle Wyatt, 78, died Feb. 23 at her residence.

ASHLEY DIANE PENROSE
HELENA — Funeral service for Ashley Diane Penrose, 20 months, was Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at Southern Heritage Chapel. Burial was in Helena City Cemetery.
The infant died Feb. 12. Always known as “Punky” by her family, she was the sweetest, most precious daughter any parent could ever wish to have. She was such a fighter through everything she had to endure. She has gone on to Heaven, free of any pain and discomfort, to be with her great-grandmothers and her great-great-grandmothers who are enjoying each and every second with her now. She was such a joy to our lives during her brief time with us and will forever be greatly missed.
She is survived by her parents, John and Diane Penrose; brother, Jonathon of Helena; sister, Kathy (Michael) Green; brother, Christopher Penrose, all of Lavergne, Tenn.; sister, Michelle (Trey) Northcutt and nephew, TJ Northcutt, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; grandparents, Tommy and Carol Crowder of Alpine, Clint and Sara Hyde of Hueytown; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss her.

ODENVILLE — Funeral service for Jackie Burson, 49, was Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home chapel in Leeds. Burial was in Branchville Cemetery.
Mrs. Burson died Feb. 19. She was employed as manager of Moody Raceway.
She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Burson; son, Chris Lovell; daughter, Michelle Entrekin; father, Lonnie Courson; brother, Wayne Courson; and sister, Patsy Slaughter.
Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds directed the service.

STEELE — Graveside service for Howard Macon “Mike” Deason, 79, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery
in Sylacauga.
Mr. Deason died Feb. 22. He was born July 18, 1924, to Henry Marcus and Maggie Lena Deason. He was a graduate of Sylacauga High School. He proudly served in the Army during World War II and was a decorated veteran. He retired from A&P Grocers and loved Alabama football. He was preceded in death by his brother, Therold Deason; sisters, Elsie Deason Yongue and Evelyn Deason Elrod; and son, Terry Deason.
He is survived by son, Andy Deason; daughter, Cheryl Pope; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

JOE BUEL HARRELL JR.
ALPINE — Graveside service for Joe Buel Harrell Jr., 77, will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Pine Hill Memorial Park with Dr. Larry Morris officiating.
Mr. Harrell died Feb. 25 at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City. He was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County, was a retired painter for Coosa Valley BMC and was a veteran of World War II. He was a former employee of Beaunit Fibers and was a member of Plainview Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Harrell; and son, Joe Ed Harrell.
He is survived by daughters, Shelia H. Todd of Gordo and Heather Daniel Bennefield of Alpine; sons, Ronnie Harrell of Winterboro, Terry Bennefield of Alpine and Gary Bennefield of Sycamore; sisters, Mary Mumphries of Lincoln, Peggy Ann Jones of Plantersville and Thelma Yvone Hardy of Alpine; brothers, Charles Harrell, Roscoe Harrell and Ralph Harrell of Talladega; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

OTIS L. HORTON
ASHLAND — Funeral service for Otis L. Horton, 88, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home chapel in Ashland with Brother Robert Elmore, Brother Murray Stackhouse, John Keith Warren and Brother Ray Stansell officiating. Burial will be in Clay County Memory Gardens with military honors.
Mr. Horton died Feb. 23 at Russell Medical Center in Alexander City. He was a native of Jefferson County, was a former resident of Dade County, Fla., and Louisiana and had lived in Clay County for 22 years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. He was a retired electrician, received numerous awards for handgun marksmanship and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Sons of the Confederacy, N.R.A., V.F.W. Post 05718 and the Coral Cables Yacht Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wesley Horton and Dora Isabel Lowrimore Horton; sister, May Kennedy and brothers, Wiley Horton, Charlie Horton and Herbert Horton.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews, Carl Horton, Charlie W. Horton, Grant Horton, Gale Horton, Robert Horton, Janice Kennedy and Marlene Kennedy.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Creed, Gary Few, Bruce Horn, Craig Wesley, Phillip Wesley and Charles McKee.
Members of SCV Camp 523 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday and until service time Friday.

KENNESAW, Ga. — Funeral service for Ann Chandler Persons, 89, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Persons died Feb. 25 at Ross Memorial Nursing Home in Kennesaw, Ga. She was a teacher at Sylacauga High School for 23 years, was a member of First Baptist Church of Sylacauga and taught Sunday school for 59 years. Her father was the Rev. Roy Chandler, former pastor of First Baptist Church of Sylacauga. She was a member of the Wise and Other Wise Study Club, was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Educational Society and taught the Chandler Sunday School and Ann Persons Bible Study Class. She attended Montevallo College where she received her BS degree. She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Roy Chandler; her husband, James Tony Persons; and sister, Margaret Montgomery.
She is survived by daughters, Arista Ann Persons Hall of Marietta, Ga., and Toni Persons Turner of Bon Secour; grandchildren, Clifford Lamar Hall III of Austin, Texas, Chandler Hall of Huntsville, Courtney Arista Hall Smith of Jasper, Ga., Toni Baria of Fairhope and Marjorie Baria Jones of Spanish Fort; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Chandler Ellis of Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Chandler Sunday School Class and Ann Persons Bible Study Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
