ESSIE REE BLANKENSHIP

SYLACAUGA — Essie Ree Blankenship of Rockford died Nov. 1 at Coosa Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Radney-Smith Funeral Home.

JEFFREY CHARLES BRACKETT

CHILDERSBURG — Funeral service for Jeffrey Charles Brackett, 39, will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Childersburg Church of God with the Rev. Louie Fincher officiating. Burial will be in Childersburg Cemetery.

Mr. Brackett died Oct. 31 at Coosa Valley Baptist Medical Center in Sylacauga. He served in the military for 13 years and was a decorated and honored soldier in Desert Storm. He was a minister of the gospel of Jesus Chris and was a counselor at the Rapha Christian Home. He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Nancy Brackett; grandfather, James P. Tarvin; and a sister, Cynthia Brackett.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Brackett of Childersburg; two sons, Jacob Brackett and Noah Brackett of Boaz; three stepchildren, Phillip Genry, Amanda Genry and Amy Genry; his father and stepmother, A.C. and Martha Jane Brackett of Attalla; his mother and stepfather, Martha and Danny Stringer of Huntsville; a brother, Ricky Lee Brackett of Bellville, Ill.; three stepbrothers, Phillip Haynes of Gadsden, Carl Brackett of Alexander City and Mark Brackett of the U.S. Army; two stepsisters, Rebecca Brackett of Bellville, Ill., and Rachel Hunter of Gadsden; and a grandmother, Argie Tarvin of Boaz.

The family will receive friends Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Childersburg Church of God.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home will direct the service.

KENNETH CASS

TALLADEGA — Kenneth Cass, 54, formerly of Talladega, died Oct. 31 in Hisperia, Calif.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.

JOSEPH LEE GRIFFIN

HOMEWOOD — Memorial service for Joseph Lee Griffin, 51, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s on the Highland with the Rev. Huey Gardner officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at The Drennen House.

Mr. Griffin died Oct. 31. He was born in Talladega and lived in Lincoln before moving to Pell City, where he graduated from Pell City High School. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He remained an active member of the fraternity, where he served on the House of Cooperation and the Board of Trustees for Phi Gamma Delta. He was active in Mountain Brook Community Athletic programs, where he served as a coach and athletic director. He was the senior vice president of construction loans for First Federal Mortgage Company. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Willingham Griffin.

He is survived by his wife, Camie Pritchard Griffin of Mountain Brook; two sons, Joseph Lee Griffin Jr. and Thomas Pritchard Griffin of Mountain Brook; one daughter, Louise Hinton Griffin of Mountain Brook; his father, Tom Fleet Griffin Jr. of Pell City; three brothers, Tom Fleet Griffin III of Montgomery and Michael Willingham Griffin and Lynn Watson Griffin of Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Oak Ranch or to the Phi Gamma Delta Scholarship Fund. P.O. Box 10039, Tuscaloosa, Ala., 35486.

Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood will direct the service.

BEATRICE JACKSON

PIEDMONT — Beatrice Jackson, 87 of Piedmont died Nov. 1 at the Rehabilitation and Health Center in Birmingham.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ervin Funeral Chapel.

ROSA LEE LUKER

TALLADEGA — Graveside service for Rosa Lee Luker, 87, of Talladega will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Hemphill officiating.

Mrs. Luker died Nov. 1 at Talladega Healthcare Center. She was a native of St. Clair County and a resident of Talladega for many years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class. She was a retired nurse at Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Luker.

She is survived by her cousins, Lloyd Stone of Branchville, Ida Sue Bain of Cropwell and Dean Mathews of Montevallo; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Usrey Funeral Home will direct the service.

JOHN McCLURKIN

TALLADEGA — Funeral service for John McClurkin, 82, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary chapel with the Rev. James Evans officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery.

Mr. McClurkin died Oct. 28 at Talladega Healthcare Center. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and attended the Antioch School and was employed by Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind for about 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis McClurkin and Kindness Brown McClurkin; three sisters, Julie Thomas, Mattie Chatman and Lucille Garrett; four brothers, J.C. McClurkin, McArthur McClurkin, Virgil McClurkin and Willie B. McClurkin.

He is survived by a sister, Charlotte Butler of Anniston; two brothers, Sam McClurkin of Anniston and Albert McClurkin of Birmingham; and his primary caregivers, Alphonzo and Gladys Garrett of Talladega.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary Monday from 6 until 7 p.m.

Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

ALFONZIA GOVER

PELL CITY — Funeral service for Alfonzia Gover, 78, of 2625 Stearns Drive, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Pell City with the Rev. W.J. Posey and the Rev. Elliot T. Ivey officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Gover died Oct. 31 at his residence. He was a former employee of Avondale Mills and Builders Supply Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Nobles Gover; a son, Kenneth A. Gover; brothers, Henry Gover and Lawrence Gover Jr.; sisters, Juliette Threatt, Rosa Nell Freely, Versie Spears, Willie Mae Gover and Hortense Gover; and his parents, Lawrence Gover Sr. and Mary Jackson Gover.

He is survived by daughters, Vickie O'Neal Gover, Stephanie Renae Beavers, Natasha Gover and Lucille McGowan of Pell City, Felisha Denise Carter of Talladega, JoAnn Burch of Columbia, Pa., Sylvia Johnson of Lexington, Ky., Alicia Kaye Mays of Birmingham and Gloria Renee Moore of Wetumpka; sons, Christopher Gover of Lincoln, Alonzo Gover of Pell City, Wendell Gover of Villa Rica, Ga., Adrian Darnell Taylor and Efrem Z. McCoy of Pell City and Sherman R. Moore of Atmore; sister, Nollie Mae Waites of Pell City; brother, Charlie Weston of Anniston; and a host of grandchildren.

The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.

Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

FRANCES SCHELL ATCHLEY

SYLACAUGA — Frances (Lucy) Schell Atchley, 74, died Nov. 3 at her residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel.

ESSIE REE BLANKENSHIP

ROCKFORD — Funeral service for Essie Ree Blankenship, 82, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at New Site Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Evans officiating. Burial will be in New Site Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Blankenship died Nov. 1. She was a member of New Site Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a son, Wilburn Junior Blankenship.

She is survived by her husband, William Lowell Blankenship of Rockford; daughter, Doris Blankenship Poe of Blanchard, Okla.; son, Bobby Blankenship of Weogufka; daughters, Mavis Blankenship Pope of Rockford and Ann Blankenship Opperman of Weogufka; son, Terry Blankenship of Rockford; brothers, J.L. Jones of Montgomery and Ervin Jones of Sylacauga; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jason Blankenship, Steve Blankenship, Scott Blankenship, Bobby Blankenship, Josh Blankenship and Jerry Blankenship.

J. WILLIE GOODGAME

PELL CITY — Funeral service for J. Willie Goodgame, 82, was Monday at Kilgroe Funeral Home chapel in Pell City with the Rev. Travis Tremble and Charles Robinson officiating. Burial was in Valley Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Goodgame died Nov. 1.

He is survived by his wife, Billie R. Goodgame; brothers, Floyd A. Goodgame and Adrick Goodgame; sisters, Janette G. Beavers, Regina Harveston and Annie Warnix; several neices and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Pallbearers were Charlie Robinson, Jason Goodgame, Mark Masters, Carl Goodgame, Wayne Beavers and Johnny Beavers.

Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City directed the service.

GLADYS WRIGHT GUTHRIE

PELL CITY — Funeral service for Gladys Wright Guthrie, 68, will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Usrey-Chapel Hill Funeral Home chapel in Pell City with the Rev. Tony Burns officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery.

Mrs. Guthrie died Nov. 1. She was a lifelong resident of Pell City and was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil H. Guthrie Jr., and a son, Bob Guthrie. She was a nurse at St. Clair Regional Hospital from 1980 to 1994. She was involved with her husband in founding the first independently owned ambulance service in Pell City. She was probably best known for her well landscaped yard and her love of flowers.

She is survived by daughters, Jackie Steele of Madison and Jenice "Sam" Guthrie of Birmingham; son, Wesley Guthrie of Pell City; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one nephew.

Pallbearers will be Rodney Lambert, Joe Sawyer III, Harry McCoy, Gene Watson, Vivian Layton and Bill Snider.

Usrey-Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.

JOSEPH F. HILL

PELL CITY — Joseph F. Hill, 73, died Nov. 2 at St. Clair Regional Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Sims Funeral Service.

LOUISE PHAGAN HOGAN

TALLADEGA — Private memorial service for Louise Phagan Hogan, 85, were held.

Mrs. Hogan died Oct. 31 at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. She was a retired teacher who served many years in the Talladega City School System. She was a Baptist by faith. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Phagan, and a sister, Billie Marie Kendrick.

She is survived by son, George R. Roebuck III of Talladega; daughter, Stuart Roebuck Curlee of Alexandria; grandchildren, G. Robert Roebuck IV, Robin F. Roebuck, Elizabeth C. McKellar, Julia C. Hall and James David Curlee; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
