Dee, John Francis, Jr., age 75, died Saturday, April 24, 1999. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at Olinger's Mortuary, Denver (16th & Boulder). Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, April 28, at 10 a.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Downtown Denver. Dee received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University, Chicago in 1947. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame Law School, Dee became head basketball coach at the University of Alabama in 1952, leading the "Rocket Eight" to the SEC crown in 1956. Dee came to Denver to coach the D-C Truckers of the fledgling NIBL, taking the Truckers to consistent league dominance. After serving as Denver's Manager of Parks and Recreation, Dee moved back to South Bend to become head basketball coach at Notre Dame in 1964, taking the Irish to the NCAA tournament in his first seas on. In his seven years at Notre Dame, Dee orchestrated four consecutive 20-win seasons in his last four years at Notre Dame, the first 20-win seasons in Notre Dame history. Dee led his Irish teams to four NCAA Championship appearances and one trip to the NIT. Dee retired from coaching in 1971 and was elected Denver City Auditor in 1975. Admitted to both the Colorado and Illinois Bars, Dee practiced law until his death. Preceded in death by his wife, the former Katherine Noesen of Skokie, Illinois; Dee is survived by three children, Melinda, Dennis and John III, all of Denver; a granddaughter, Katherine Coler; and two sisters, Kathleen Dunne and Nora Murphy, both of Chicago.
