WALTER DEWEY (W.D.) BARNETT

Feb. 23, 1923-Oct. 4, 2003

W.D. Barnett, 80, a fifty-six year resident of Center Hill Road.

Beloved and adored husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died Saturday morning at Montclair Baptist Medical Center. W.D. was born February 23, 1923 to Phillip Henry and Lallage Stone Barnett at Coalmont, AL.

He served with the Army during WWII in Africa and Italy. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal AR 600-680, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. While serving in Italy he was wounded, Honorably Discharged and sent home. Where he met courted and married his new brother-in-law’s youngest sister visiting from North Dakota, Solveig Aarhus.

W.D.'s main interest and joy was his family. His life was dedicated to his wife and his children having everything they needed to have happy and fulfilling lives. He enjoyed traveling with his family. Summer vacations W.D. and Solveig traveled with their girls to the mountains and the beach. There were also trips to North Dakota for family reunions with Solveig's family. He was an avid aficionado of the Old West and cowboy histories. He had an extensive collection of books, films, and music on the cowboy genre. In pursuit of that interest he made trips to city of Medora in the Badlands of North Dakota, Tombstone, Arizona, visiting a western town there that was the site of many western films, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, visiting the Grand Teton National Park and enjoying a Chuck Wagon supper at the Bar J Ranch. He had a great zest for life.

A fundamental part of his life was his walk with God, for 57 years W.D. was an active member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, serving over the years in numerous positions in church government. He was an Honorary member of the Administrative Council.

Starting out in life he worked several jobs, he once worked as a lumber jack in Tennessee, but spent most of his working life as Chief Fireman at the Kimberly-Clark plant in Childersburg and retired from there after 36 years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Solveig Aarhus Barnett, four daughters, Debbie (Michael) Birch of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Rhonda (Richard) Gill of Sylacauga, AL, Mona (Don) Pruitt of Childersburg, AL, and Myra (Eric) Edwards of Sylacauga, AL; ten grandchildren, Kim (Jimmy) Yoder, Jeremy (Karen) McDonald, Adam McDonald, Misty (Jeremy) Hogan, Jason Pruitt, Amanda Yoder, Wesley Yoder, Ashley Edwards, Kyle Edwards, Courtney Edwards; five great grandchildren, Travis McDonald, Madeline McDonald, Caroline Hogan, Kaylin McDonald, and Trey McDaniel. His sister Lavene Aarhus; his brothers-in-law Ole Aarhus, Olaf Holte, Lyle Aarhus; his sister-in-laws Juliet Barnett, Jan Barnett, Betty Aarhus, Junice Holte, Evelyn McIntyre, Jeanine Aarhus; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Thurman Barnett, Robert Barnett; his sisters, Virginia Ragsdale, Lorene Bassett, Doris Brown, Betty Lee; his sister-in-law Lillian Bussma; his brothers-in-law Chester Bussma, Mac McIntyre, David Aarhus, Herman Ragsdale, Claude Bassett, George Lee, Harland Brown; and his son-in-law Michael Birch.

Pallbearers will be Tony Aarhus, Allan Barnett, Greg Bassett, Will Glaze, Eric Wilson, and Jimmy Yoder.

Visitation: Monday, October 6, 5 p.m. till 9 p.m., Curtis & Sons Childersburg Chapel.

Services: Tuesday, October 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. The pastors will be Brother Sonny Champion, Brother John Cosby, and Brother Ralph Griffitt.

Burial: Green Hill Cemetery.

ANNIE MAUDE GIDDENS

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Annie Maude Giddens, 87, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Gwathney and the Rev. Ralph Green officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Giddens died Oct. 6 at a residence in Munford. She was a lifelong member and the oldest member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Sylacauga where she taught Sunday school. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by sons, Curtis Giddens of Millerville and Melvin Giddens of Sylacauga; daughters, Annie Mae Thomas of Talladega, Aveline Chandler of Sylacauga and Joyce Stoudenmire of Montevallo; sisters, Mattie Lou Denney of Lineville, Ruth Royals of Shady Grove and Catherine Miller of Vincent; 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, one stepgreat-grandchild, six stepgreat-grandchildren and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The body may be viewed Wednesday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

BOBBY G. BECK

MOODY — Funeral service for Bobby G. Beck, 52, was Sunday at Jefferson Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Christian Nicholos officiating. Burial was in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.

Mr. Beck died Oct. 2. He was employed with the City of Birmingham for 28 years.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Beck; daughters, Jennifer Beck Reynolds and Jessica Beck White; son, Christopher Beck; brother, Paul Beck; and two grandsons.

Jefferson Memorial Trussville Chapel directed the service.

WILLIAM BERRY

CHILDERSBURG — William Berry, 86, died Oct. 5 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg Chapel.

CLINTON BROWN

ASHLAND — Funeral service for Clinton Brown, 43, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Methodist Church in Bluff Springs with the Rev. Kenneth Fuller officiating. Burial will be in the Brown Family Cemetery in Bluff Springs.

Mr. Brown died Oct. 4 in Tallapoosa County. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, was a wood producer and had worked in the maintenance department at Sunny Fresh and Tyson's in Ashland. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Joe Brown and Clara Faye Hester Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Wyvenee Brown of Ashland; daughter, Tonya Cleveland of Ashland; stepson, Christopher Cotney; brothers, Ronnie Brown of Ashland, Lynn Brown of Wadley, Gordon Brown of Ashland, Jacky Brown of Cragford and Tony Brown of Ashland; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland will direct the service.

BERNICE LOUISE THOMAS GOODEN

MUNFORD — Funeral service for Bernice Louise Thomas Gooden, 68, of 350 Goodenville Road, will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence M. Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Hall Grove Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Gooden died Oct. 3 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston. She was a graduate of Ophelia S. Hill High School in Munford and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Harold Gooden; sons, Norris Gooden and Terry Gooden; sister, Claudia Bolton; and her parents, Claude Thomas and Bernice Jones Thomas. She was a volunteer at Citizens Baptist Medical Center.

She is survived by daughters, Charlotte Gooden Turner of Oxford and Bereandine Gooden Rawlins and Katrina K. Gooden of Munford; sons, Willie T. Gooden of Anniston, Johnny R. Gooden and Anthony Gooden of Munford, Tracy D. Gooden of Lineville and Jimmy F. Gooden of Ft. Stewart, Ga.; sisters, Virger Golightly of Atlanta, Ga., and Lanell Lloyd of Anniston; brother, Jimmy Thomas of Anniston; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.

Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

SMITH G. INBODY

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Smith G. Inbody, 89, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North chapel with Dr. Jackie Bentley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Inbody died Oct. 5 at her residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward G. Inbody; parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Gravette; sisters, Eulana Bush and Odie Stewart; and brothers, Robert G. Gravette and Hugh H. Gravette.

She is survived by son, Edward Lawrence Inbody and wife Anna of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren, Jessica Leigh, Richard Gordon "Ricky", Edward Lawrence "Larry" Jr. and William Daniel, all of South Carolina; sisters, Vida Talbot of Headland and Mary E. Talbert of Montgomery; brothers, Ralph K. Gravette and David T. Gravette of Sylacauga; four sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, send donations to Lakeside Hospice, P.O. Box 544, Pell City, Ala., 35125.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

RAMEY LUE MAY McCARVER

SYLACAUGA — Graveside service for Ramey Lue May McCarver, 85, formerly of Marion County, was Monday at 11 a.m. in Winfield City Cemetery.

Mrs. McCarver died Oct. 3.

She is survived by her husband, J. Woodrow McCarver of Sylacauga; daughter, Lanora McCarver Bush of Sylacauga; and one granddaughter.

Miles Funeral Home of Winfield directed the service.

MATTHEW NORWOOD

HARPERSVILLE — Matthew Norwood, of 261 Viaduct Drive, died Oct. 5.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Childersburg Mortuary Service.

SYLACAUGA — Joyce Thornton died Oct. 4.

ALPINE — Hugh Watkins, 73, of 525 Feddisburg Road, died Oct. 6 at Talladega Health Care Center.
