Barnette, Leslie Joseph "Joe", a native of Atlanta, Georgia, lived in Walnut Creek for 28 years. He was former Vice-President and General Manager of Cutter Biological and Bio-Medical Divisions in Berkeley, California. Joe served in the U. S. Navy. He and his wife, Elouise lived in Birmingham (Mountain Brook) Alabama during the early years of their marriage. They and their son, Michael moved to Walnut Creek in 1971. Joe was a member of Saint John Vianney Church. His hobbies and interests included: Civil War History, U. S. Military History, model airplanes, literature, gardening, and above all else, he was a wine connoisseur. Joe is survived by his wife of more than 46 years, Elouise, his son, Michael and Michael's wife, Carolyn, of Redwood City, CA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Faye Easterwood of Rome, Ga. Mooney, Arnold Gaston, Sr., age 80, recently of Birmingham, passed away January 10, 1999. He was a World War II Veteran and retired with 29 years in the Military. He was owner of Waco Fence Company and had been a longtime resident of Montgomery, Alabama, and member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church. He was active in his church, the Masons, Scottish Rite and Shrine. A memorial service was held on January 12, at Meadow Brook Baptist Church, with Chaplain Jim Elrod, Dr. Ron Sumners and Rev. Charles Stroud officiating, and Ministers of Music Rev. Gary Walker, Rev. Ed Cleveland, soloists Sharon Cleveland, and Pipe Major Larry McIntosh. Pallbearers were David Brown, Bill Dunham, James Floyd, Wayne Hamm, David W. Huffman and Courtney H. Mason. Honorary pallbearers were Howard Elliott, Buddy Rogers, Stephen Stroud and Dan Urquhart. A graveside service with full military honors was held at the family cemetery at Cambridge Christian Church in Five Points, Alabama. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Jenkins Mooney; one son, Arnold G. Mooney II; daughter-in-law Kelly; and three grandchildren, Gaston, Houston and Arrington Mooney. He loved life, his family, and most of all the Lord, and will be dearly missed.
Riley, Peggy Jefferson, age 63, of Hueytown, died January 15, 1999. Loving wife, mother, and devoted grandmother. Johnson, Samuel Lewis, age 56, of Fairfield, passed away, Friday, February 18, 2000, at 6:03 a.m. in Detroit, Mich. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Galilee Baptist Church, Fairfield, AL, Rev. John Adams, Pastor officiating. “Sam” was born the sixth child of the union of Mr. Cottrell Johnson and Mrs. Lucille Render Johnson on September 3, 1943. He was a graduate of Westfield High School; he attended Lawson State Community College. In the mid 1960’s he was employed with Ford Motor Co. and later General Motors during which time he was inducted into the U. S. Army through the draft and served his country during the Vietnam War and was honorable discharged where he was listed as a Disable Vietnam Veteran. He was a member of the St. Paul AME Church then in Westfield, AL. He later united with the Thompson Chapel AME Zion Church in Fairfield, AL. He was united in Holy matrimony to Charlcie Fykes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Cottrell and Mrs. Lucille Johnson; two brothers, Cottrell Johnson, Jr. and David Lee Johnson; one granddaughter, Ivy Ridgeway and one nephew, Frederick McKeown.
