He was a member of Cardiff Baptist Church, retired from U.S. Steel, graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, and was a teacher and tutor at Walker State College. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 1, from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Bell Funeral Home in Forestdale. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, December 2, at 11 a.m. at Cardiff Cemetery. He is survived by sisters, Rosemary (William) Nail of Cardiff and Angie (Bobby) Walker of Forestdale; brother, Joseph "Jobo" (Sue) Country of Cardiff; sister-in-law, Frances Country of Cardiff; numerous nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death by brother, Claude Country. Bell Funeral Home in Forestdale is directing.

Shaw, Dr. Thomas L., age 79, native of Birmingham, died Thursday, November 25, 1999. He was retired from Jefferson County Board of Education as Director of Federal Programs. He served in the United States Navy. He was a Phi Delta Kappa. He was a graduate of Parker High School. He received a n A.B. degree in Science, B.S. degree in Science and Mathematics, M.A. degree in Educational Psychology, Administration from Atlanta University. He studied Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Educational Psychology and Administration at the University of Alabama. He received a Ph.D. degree in Educational and Psychology from Walden University. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Survivors: wife, Barbara M. Shaw; devoted nephew, Robert (Pat) Shaw, Jr.; brother, Robert L. Shaw, Sr.; nephew, Thomas (Carolyn) Shaw; niece, Diane L. Perdue; aunt, Ruth Patton of Greensboro; two great nephews, three great nieces, seven sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law. Service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 2, 1999 at Noon. Pastor Marcell A. Johnson I officiating. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Smith and Gaston Funeral Services, Southside directing.

Cobb, Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Long, (nee Long), age 77, of Alexander City, died November 29, 1999. She was born June 27, 1922 in Bessemer, AL, to the late Charles Allen Long and the la te Lois Long (nee Lois Mason). She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Mr. Joseph L. Cobb of Alexander City; sons, William A. Cobb of Birmingham, Joseph L. Cobb, Jr. of Birmingham, Kenneth L. Cobb of Birmingham; daughters, Leah C. Webb of Birmingham, Lois C. Clement of Rocky Mount, NC; and brother, Charles A. Long, Jr. of Birmingham, AL; 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Jacob Long, and parents. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 1 fr om 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 2, 1999 at 10 a.m., the Rev. Peter Horn officiating at Elmwood Cemetery. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Children's Harbor-1, Our Children's Highway, Children's Harbor, AL 35010. Radney's Funeral Home, Inc., Alexander City, directing.

Harris, Annie Mae, age 89, of Birmingham, died Thursday, November 25, 1999. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 2, at Noon at Bushelon Chapel with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Survivors: daughters, Louise Cunningham, Mary J. (Eldridge) Strickland, and Bell Lola (Robert) Watkins; son, Arthur (Anita) Marion; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, and friends. Bushelon Funeral Home directing.

Bryant, Era V., the former Era Brindley of Cullman, AL, age 89, most recently of Tarrant, AL died Tuesday, November 30, 1999 at a local hospital. She was retired from Arthur Elementary School. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Tarrant. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 2, 1999 at 12 noon at Gardendale Chapel. Burial will be at Semcoe Cemetery, Cullman. Visitation will be at Gardendale Chapel on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude E. Bryant of Lynchburg, VA. She is survived by her two daughters, Carolyn (Donald) Crocker of Tarrant, and Lea Ann Bryant of Tarrant. Preceded in death by two daughters, Marilyn Nordmann and Diane Bryant (Dione). She is also survived by two sons, Tommy (Nancy) Bryant of Tarrant, and Eddie Bryant of Birmingham; one sister, Florence Simmons of Birmingham; and two brothers, Parker Brindley of Birmingham and Huel Brindley of Birmingham; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Beck, Mr. August, age 84 of Warrior, Alabama, died Tuesday, November 30, 1999. Member of The Warrior First United Methodist Church for 70 years. Survivors: daughter: Doan Beck Devenyns - Plano, Texas; grandchildren: Steven Beck (Victoria Franks) Devenyns - Saratoga, CA, Jennifer Lane Devenyns - Saratoga, CA; great-grandchildren, Jessica Devenyns and Michael Devenyns - both of Saratoga, CA; sisters, Betty Beck Bishop - Cashiers, NC, Virginia Beck Hamilton - Quitman, GA. Funeral service will be held at Messmer-Goodwin Chapel on Thursday, December 2, 1999 at 11:00 a.m., with burial in Warrior Cemetery. Rev. Jonathan Todd presiding. Hayes, Minerva Jean, age 87 of Birmingham, AL, died Thursday, November 25, 1999. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Daughter of Isis and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 2, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, with burial in Montevallo Cemetery. Survivors: daughters, Allison Jones and Lela King, both of Birmingham, AL; Doris Burns of Chicago, IL; sons, Frederick Hayes and Alonzo Hayes, both of Birmingham, AL; twelve grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren. Splawn, Annie Nell (nee FLEMING), age 89, of Hueytown, died November 29, 1999. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, Rebekah's Auxiliary of Odd Fellow's Lodge. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 2, at 1:30 p.m. at Brown's Bessemer with burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Roscoe Carn officiating. Willis, Mrs. Mozelle "Mo", age 81 of Birmingham, AL, died November 29, 1999. She was a member of Advent Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Survivors: son, Larry K. Willis (Sue), Bossier City, LA; daughter, Jan (Jim) Edge, Brentwood, TN; grandchildren, Melissa Wisniowski, Jason Willis, Christy Edge and Megan Willis; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Wisniowski and Zachary Wisniowski; sister, Hazel Hammett, Mobile, AL. Funeral service will be held Thursday, December 2, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at Roebuck Chapel, with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Leeds, AL. Rev. Keith Marriott presiding. Burial will follow in Friendship Church Cemetery, Gardendale, AL at 2:30 p.m. with Masons from Masonic Lodge #456, Morris, AL, officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 1, 1999 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Frederick's Funeral Home, Opelika, AL. Mr. Cole, who passed away Monday, November 29, 1999 in Opelika, was born September 29, 1912 in Jefferson County, AL, the son of Charles E. and Fannie Mae Cole. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #456, Morris, AL, the Teamsters Union, and Glennwood Baptist Church in Morris, AL. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn M. Cole of Opelika; two sons, Billy Cole of Birmingham and Don Cole of Hoover, AL; one daughter, Bernice Elizabeth Adcox of Beulah; three grandsons, Jerry Sanders of Beulah, Barry Sanders of Opelika, and Terry Sanders of Valley; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Alzheimer's Association Southeast Alabama Chapter, Post Office Box 609, Dothan, AL 36302. Barnett, Susie "Mamie Sue", age 94, a longtime resident of Jacksonville, FL passed away November 29, 1999 at a local Hospice Center. Her husband, John William Barnett, who died in 1960, precedes her. She was born in Berry, AL on March 17, 1905. She retired from nursing before moving to Florida. She was the wonderful mother of three children, William David "Doug" Barnett who preceded her in death in 1992, Mrs. Carolyn Rebecca Brown of Jacksonville, FL, and Mrs. Hilda Marguerite Burton of Hueytown. She attended University Baptist Church. She is survived by her sister, Flora Mae Kopp of Fayette; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was greatly loved by many and will be missed by her family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 2, at the chapel of Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Rd, with Rev. Jack J. Dinsbeer officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington Park Cemetery.
