Ferrell, Connie M., age 65, of Birmingham, AL died December 30, 1998 with her family by her bedside at a local hospital. She was born in Decatur, IL on May 24, 1933 and graduated co-salutatorian from the University of Illinois in 1955. In 1957 she married Lt. Edward Shinault Ferrell USN, and t hey moved to Birmingham in 1960. She devoted her life to caring for her husband and three children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy and Emil Kull and her brothers, Paul Kull and Don Kull. She is survived by her husband, Ed, and his sister, Laurencine Freeman, their three sons, Edward Shinault Jr., and his wife, Charlene; Dr. Mathew Bruce and his wife, Diane; Dr. Michael Scott, and two grandchildren, Britany Lee Ferrell and Mathew Blayne Ferrell. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 2, at 9:30 a.m. at Southern Heritage Chapel, with burial immediately following the ceremony. Father Sean Rooney, S.D.B. will be officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 402 Office Park Dr., Suite 300, Birmingham, AL 35223. Tompkins, Willie, Jr., age 53, of Birmingham, departed December 29, 1998. Baptized at an early age. He last attended U.A.B. Employed at O'Neal Steel Co. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 2, at 12:00 Noon at the Smith & Gaston Funeral Chapel-Southside. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery. He will truly be missed by family and love ones. Survivors: mother, Mrs. Rodgerdeane Gallagher; brothers, Perry Tompkins (Delores), Hiram Gallagher (preceded him in death), Gerald Gallagher (Barbara), Kenneth Gallagher, Barry Gallagher (Lawanna), and Reginald Gallagher; sisters, Deborah Foster (Jerry), Reva Harris, and Muriel Gallagher all of Birmingham; host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Smith & Gaston directing.

Owens, Willis T. "Bo", age 85, of Fairfield, Alabama, died Friday, December 25, 1998. He was a member of St. Paul AME Church Fairfield. Funeral service at St. Paul AME Church Fairfield will be held Saturday, January 2, 1999 at 1:00 P.M. Burial in Carver Cemetery. Survivors: sister, Helen Edwards Baker; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Smith & Gaston South Side directing.

Williams, Griffin, Sr., formerly of Birmingham, died December 28, 1998. Funeral ser vice at 37th Street Baptist Church will be held Saturday, January 2, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. Burial in Zion Memorial Gardens. Survivors: son, Clarence (Pinkie) Williams of Cincinnati, Ohio; adopted son, Marvin Smith of Birmingham, Ala.; adopted daughter, Mary Woodruff of Birmingham, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a former daughter-in-law, Evelyn Williams of Birmingham, Ala.; a host of other relatives and friends. Abbott, John E., Sr., age 59, of Birmingham, died December 30, 1998. He was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and attended UAB. He was a member of the Warblers Club, and a member of a gospel quartet. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 2, at 11 a.m. at Roebuck Chapel with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. Dr. Ryan Whitley officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Survivors: wife, Bebe Abbott; son, John Abbott, Jr.; daughter, Yonna Riddle and her husband, Louis; granddaughter, Heather Dai; brothers, Charles Abbott and his wife, Frances, Jack Abbott and his wife, Carol; sister-in-law, Nancy Plylar; brother-in-law, Johnny Boockholdt. Allen, Mrs. Johnnie Mae, age 94, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Tuesday, December 29, 1998. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church Collegeville where she was a member of the Senior Usher Board and was a Sunday School Worker. Funeral service at Bethel Baptist Church Collegeville will be held Saturday, January 2, 1998 at 11:00 A.M. Rev. Thomas Wilder officiating. Burial in Zion Memorial Gardens. Survivors: step-daughter, Bobbie Jean Watkins of Chicago, Ill.; step-son, Joseph Allen of Chicago, Ill.; sister, Mrs. Blanche Davis of Montgomery, Ala.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Wallace, Cleola Barfield, native of Birmingham and retired teacher of thirty-three years from Birmingham Public Schools, departed this life Saturday, December 26, 1998. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 2, 1999 at 12:00 Noon at St. James Missionary Baptist Church (1300 24th Street North). Rev. Gerald Jones, officiating. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Survivors include: husband, Walter H. Wallace; daughter, Virginia T. Wallace; son, Walter E. Wallace (Jackie); sister, Easter B. Yow (Walker). Smith & Gaston North Side directing.

Hope, Charles Lee, Jr., age 47, passed December 25, 1998. He is survived by: his parents, Charles, Sr. & Geneva Hope; five children, Tracy, LaShawndra, Dedrick, Vicki, and Demetrius; two brothers, James (Pat) and Nathaniel; sister-in-law, Betty; a special friend, Pat Williams. Services will be held at Lily Grove Baptist Church on January 2, 199 9 at 12:00 Noon. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Smith & Gaston Northside directing.

Derryberry, Lt. Col. Edwin C. (USAF, Retired) of Birmingham, died the morning of December 30, 1998, at the age of 80. The son of Raymond Brown Derryberry & Viola Stan ford Derryberry of Brilliant in Marion County. Ed came to Jefferson County in the late 1930's, married the late Mildred Ellen Daniel and started a family. At the outbreak of World War II, Ed joined the U. S. Army and was trained and commissioned as a pilot at Randolph Field, Texas where he remained to train incoming aviation cadets. He served actively through three wars, flying B-29's in Korea, and serving in Vietnam. As an experienced broadcaster and journalist, he became a Public Information Officer, a capacity in which he served at Strategic Air Command Headquarters in Nebraska, Southeast Asia, and Europe before retiring in 1968 to write and to teach bowling. Colonel Derryberry was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Elaine Gaines, Eloise Stewart, and Bernice Lawrence all of Birmingham; and two brothers, Carl and Robert Fred of Deland, Florida and Brilliant, respectively. Survivors include: son, Bill, of Alabaster; and daughter, Joanne Drake of Dallas; two sisters, Dolisca Montgomery and Helen Partain each of Birmingham; s ix grandchildren, Scott and Blaine of Birmingham and Charlottesville, Va., respectively, Loree Jarrell and Jennifer Mosley of Charlottesville and Kansas City, respectively, Bo and Kevin who both reside in Tuscaloosa as University of Alabama students; one great-granddaughter, Chasity, of Bessemer; his sister-in-law, Iva Lee of Brilliant; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. A chapel service will be conducted by Elmwood Chapel at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 2, 1999, with visitation preceding the service and beginning at 12:30 P.M., Saturday. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery with Elmwood Chapel directing.

McConico, Clarence Sr., age 67, of Birmingham died December 26, 1998. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 2, 1999, at 1:00 p.m. at Bushelon Chapel. Burial will be at Shadow Lawn. Survivors include his wife, Lula McConico; daughters, Mary Maull and Leola Goldthwaite; son, Clarence McConico, Jr.; Godson, Calvin Mickens; brothers, Willie McConico, Jr., John McConico, and James McConico; seven grandchildren and ten great-grands. Bushelon Funeral Home is directing.

McNabb, John A., age 82, of Birmingham, passed away December 31, 1998. Mr. McNabb served in the U. S. Air Force in WW II and was retired from United States Steel after 40 years of service. Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 2, 1999 at Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Survivors include: wife, Helen T. McNabb; step-daughter, Beverly Scarbrough and husband, John; step-son, Lou Trice and wife, Billie Kay; four step-grandchildren; niece, Mrs. Ruth Ingram; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and George Kurtts; dear friends, Nellie and Charles Kollefrath, Charles and Sue Turner; many more friends and family. Angwin Mortuary Center's Birmingham Chapel directing.

Garrett, Mrs. Jane Berry, passed away December 30, 1998, in Roswell, New Mexico, former resident of Birmingham. Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 3, 1999, at LaGrone Funeral Chapel, with cremation following services. Born August 8, 1922, in Fairfield, Alabama. Her husband, Lt. Col. Henry O. Garrett of the home in Roswell.

Bushelon, Annie Mae Bell, age 96, of Birmingham, died Tuesday, December 29, 1998. She was a member of Group No. 5 Missionary, Sunday School Class No. 10, Sixth Avenue Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 2, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. at Sixth Avenue Bap tist Church. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. She is survived by daughters, Gladys (Walter) Beard, Rosie Hayden, Barbara Pryor, and Annie Bushelon (Charles) Holt, one foster daughter, Leila McMillan; step-daughter, Willie Erma Holley; son, Aubrey (Levoria) Bushelon; twenty-one grandchildren; several great-grands and great-great-grands; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Bushelon Funeral Home is directing.
