Shaw, Hilda Manners, age 91, of Jacksonville, AL, died March 29, 1999. She was a former resident of Birmingham and a member of the former Inglenook United Methodist Church. Mrs. Shaw was currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. She was retired from Sears, Roebuck & Company, where she taught sewing. Survivors: step-daughter, Ann Gold of Mill Valley, CA; sis ter, Elsie Wheeler of Jacksonville, AL; brothers, John Manners of Birmingham and Lee R. Smith, Mr. Andrew J., age 78, of Winfield, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999. Mr. Smith was born on May 31, 1920, in Marion County, a son of William Thomas Smith and Dolula Volcie Maddox Smith. A resident of Winfield most of his life, h e retired from Winfield Cotton Mill with forty years service, and is a member of Winfield First Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife of fifty-seven years, Mrs. Chris tine Perry Smith, Winfield; son, Donald (Sharon) Smith, Win field; daughter, Mrs. Janet (Junior) Aldridge, Winfield; grand son, Jeff Smith; granddaughter, Amy Overton; brother, Thomas Smith, Windfall, Indiana; host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Launius, John Jeptha, Ii, age 85, of Gardendale, Alabama, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999. He was born in Greshamville, Georgia, April 3, 1913. He was a veteran having served in the Pacific on the Submarine USS Bowfin during World War II and later served as an instructor at Great Lakes Naval Base during the Korean War. He was the owner/proprietor of Launius Furniture Company in Warrior, Alabama from the 1950's until his retirement in 1979. A lifelong member and steward of the Methodist Church in both Warrior and Gardendale congregations, Mr. Launius also served as a city councilman in Warrior. Visitation at Messmer-Goodwin Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 31, 1999, between 5:30 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. Chapel service will be Thursday, April 1, beginning at 2:00 P.M.
