DeTurk, Virginia Eagles, age 85, of Birmingham, died April 20, 1999. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, and former member of 76th Street Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her brother, Manning Eagles and his wife, Sally. She was a retired teacher of Alabama Education Association and YWCA of New York. Garrett, Samuel Forrest, age 78, of Butler, AL died on April 19, 1999. He was born on March 3, 1921 in Mt. Olive, AL and raised in Gardendale, AL. He was a Veteran of WW II, having served as a Marine on the USS Saratoga that was bombed at Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the Beasley Hunting Club, a Mason and was retired from the Vulcan Materials Co. in 1974. He is survived by his wife, Sallie D. Garrett; a step-daughter, Debra Jenkins, and one brother, G.P. Garrett of Vestavia, AL and several nieces and nephews. Whetstone, The Reverend Johnnie, age 80, died April 16, 1999. He was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on November 18, 1918. He was a retired minister and moderator of the Mount Zion Coosa Valley District Association. He pastored in Jefferson, Walker, and St. Clair Counties, which included the Mt. Avery Baptist Church (Margaret) for 25 years. He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church (Overton) until his death. Survivors include: brother, Mr. Will Reed; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Family will receive visitors and friends on Wednesday, April 21, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Mt. Avery Baptist Church, Margaret. Parker, Joseph W., age 75, Cape Coral, FL, died on Tuesday, April 20, 1999. He was born in Bessemer and was the son of Allen W. and Thular (Biddle) Parker. During WWII, Mr. Parker served in the U.S. Air Force and he received his B.S. degree from Auburn University in 1950. He worked as an insurance adjuster for forty years before retiring. In 1996, Mr. Parker moved to Cape Coral, FL, from Terre Haute, IN. He was a m ember of Cape Coral First United Methodist Church and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks #2596. Mr.Parker is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; two daughters, Pamela (Bob) Hughes, Terre Haute, IN, and Cathy Perdieu, Gaffney, SC; one stepson, Tom Tetrault, Mason City, IA; one stepdaughter, Lisa Tetrault, Madison, WI; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Letty Yother and Beatrice Heaton, both of Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Adelaide (Harbin) Parker, four brothers and one sister. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 1999, at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham. Smith, Thelma Pattillo Addington, age 95, a resident of Galleria Woods in Hoover, passed away April 19, 1999. Mrs. Smith was a former resident of Tarrant and a long-time member of Tarrant Rock United Methodist Church. She attended Athens College and retired as Manager of the Tarrant Housing Authority in Boyles, after many years of service. Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Billy Martin of Birmingham, and Carolyn and Elmer Hill of Destin, FL; grandchildren, Mike and Joy Patterson, David and Bonnie Martin, Nanci and Larry Sexton, Pam and Don McNutt, all of Birmingham; Marlene and John Bowman of Auburn, AL Great-grandchildren, Lark and Ty Patterson; Hunter, Will and Michael Martin, Lindsey and Blake Sexton; Kali and Molly McNutt, all of Birmingham; Brady, Corey and Jenna Bow ma n of Auburn, AL; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Vance, Doris Davis age 69, of Hueytown, died April 20, 1999. She was given a life membership pin from UMW. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hueytown. Mrs. Vance was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. S he is survived by her husband of 46 years, Rev. Hil lard C. Roubdioux, Mrs. Bitty Gladys, age 86, of Bessemer passed awy April 20, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Roubdioux Sr. and daughter, Lena B. Hughes. Alexander, Margaret Boyd, beloved wife of the late Joseph Alexander Sr., passed away on Monday, April 19, 1999, in Birmingham, AL. Survived b y a son, Joseph Alexander Jr. and wife Lois; grandchildren: Kevin (Maria), Leigh Ann Sisson (Tommy), and Chris (Lisa); and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Alvina Boyd and Lucille Alexander of Cleveland, Ohio, and brother-in-law, Robert Alexander and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wadsworth of Ireland. Washburn, Paul C., of Homewood, passed away Monday. He was a graduate of Amherst College in 1950. Mr. Washburn was a pilot in U.S. Air Force and served in Korea from 1951 to 1955. He was employed by Norton Company in Worcester, Mass. as a sales engineer from 1956 to 1971, and currently the owner and president of Washburn Company, Inc, since 1971. He was actively involved in numerous clubs and social groups in the Birmingham area. He was the beloved father of Mrs. Clare Washburn Tidmore (James) of Pinson and Ms. Jennifer Washburn Qualls of Birmingham, and grandfather to Jessica Anne Tidmore, Daniel James Tidmore and Matthew Jarrett Qualls. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 22, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Homewood. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. at the Church.
