MILLPORT, Ala. — Olivia Johnson, 78, died Jan. 15, 2013, at her residence. Services are today at 11 a.m. at Mt. Harmony Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Thompson and the Rev. James Walden officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Pinhook Hightogy. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Dowdle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Johnson was formerly employed as a textile worker and was a member of Mt. Harmony Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ollie Maudie Tipton Bobbitt. Survivors include her husband, John T. Johnson Jr. of Millport; daughters, Derendia Mize, Kaye Callahan and Sharron Owens, all of Millport; sister, Willie Bea Swink Woolbright of Columbus; brothers, Max Bobbitt and Mark Bobbitt, both of Millport; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Lance Hildreth, Andrew Lewis, George Young, Mason Payne, Wayne Hildreth and Shan Humphries.

MILLPORT, Ala. — John Cunningham, 73, died Jan. 14, 2013, at Fayette Medical Center. Services are Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Holly Grove Cemetery. Mr. Cunningham was a member of Holly Grove Baptist Church and was formerly employed with Alabama Easy Set. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lizzie Shumpert Cunningham. Survivors include his daughters, Sharon Cunningham, Sheila Hood, Dana Cunningham, Sheila Gordon and Danielle Ranch, all of Millport; sons, John Cunningham Jr., Michael Cunningham and Derrick Cunningham, all of Millport; sister, Hilda Cunningham Rice of Birmingham, Ala.; brother, Paul Cunningham of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Ricky Cox, Terry Cox, Morris Willis, Willie Willis, Greg Morton and Gilbert Hodo.

GORDO, Ala. — Eva Lois Sullivan Elmore, 87, died Jan. 10, 2013, at Northport Medical Center-DCH. Services are today at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen Sandifer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation is today from 3-5 p.m. at Skelton Funeral Home of Reform, Ala. Mrs. Elmore was born Aug. 1, 1925, in Pickens County, Ala., to the late Jessie Alonzo Sullivan and Lola Elizabeth Free Sullivan. She graduated from the Baptist Hospital of Nursing in Birmingham and was a nurse for 60 years. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Gordo. She was also a member of Glad Hearts Sunday School Class and was very active in doing volunteer work with the Diabetes Support Group, Focus Group, Pickens County Baptist Associational Office, the Blood Pressure Clinic, WMU, Pastor’s Wives Fellowship/Bible Study, area nursing homes, and New Home Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. James Leon Elmore; and five siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Alisa Duren of Panama City Beach, Fla.; sister, Marciel Burkhalter; and one grandchild. Pallbearers are Dewayne Buckhaulter, Terry Billings, Toby Kelly, Nick Tolstick, Greg Sanders and Jeremy Pate.

SULLIGENT, Ala. — Alexander Woods, 73, died March 11, 2013, at Shadescrest Health Center in Jasper, Ala. Services are Saturday at 1 p.m. Otts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to service. Mr. Woods was born March 6, 1940, to the late Clyde and Selma Wallace Woods. He attended school in Lamar County and Roxana Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Willie Jean Woods, Willie T. Woods and Rufus Woods; and sisters, Mary Mae Woods, Shirley Woods and Louise Frank. Survivors include his brothers, Milton Woods, Richard Woods and Terry Woods.

VERNON, Ala. — Betty Ruth Brock, 87, died April 10, 2013, at Generations of Vernon. Services are Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Patrick Gunn officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh cemetery in the Hightogy Community. Visitation is two hours prior to services. Mrs. Brock was born Oct. 24, 1925, to the late Dewey and Edna Falkner. She was formerly employed with Vernon Elementary School, Butler & Co., Lamar County Hospital and First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Retired Teachers Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Berneal Brock; and son, Douglas Brock.

REFORM, Ala. — Raymond “Red” House, 88, died April 20, 2013, at his residence. Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brannon Pinion officiating. Burial will follow in Graham Memorial Cemetery. Visitation one hour prior to services. Mr. house was Jan. 8, 1925, in Pickens County to the late Adam Jefferson “Ad” House and Lizzie Alexander House. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division. He was formerly employed with Dixie Steel & Supply and McAbee Construction Company. He was a member of Arbor Springs Baptist Church, the VFW and the Boys & Girls Ranches of Alabama. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lera Hidgon House; brothers, Lewood, Adolph, Herbert and A.J. House; and sisters, Lorene H. Herring, Dawn H. Chesnutt and Louise H. McAdams. Survivors include his wife, Irene J. House; daughter, Mary Alice House Roberts; special friend, Charlie Byars; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Charlie Byars, Odie McCrackin, Jimmy Bonner, Herbert House, Adam House and Andrew House.

VERNON, Ala. — Noble Curtis Christian, 89, died Aug. 23, 2010, at Druid City Hospital Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Chandler Funeral Home. Mrs. Branyon was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Booneville to the late Jesse Cypert Sloan and Cynthia Elsie McCord Sloan. She was a member of Gordo First Baptist Church, and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Branyon Sr., her parents; sister, Jesse Virginia “Gina” Perkins, and brother Leon Sloan. She is survived by her sons, James Paul Branyon Jr., of Calera, Ala., Michael Wayne Branyon, of Duncanville, Ala.; brother, Donald Ralph Sloan, of West Blocton, Ala.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

SULLIGENT, Ala. — Millie Grace Allman Cook, 92, died Sept. 20, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center. Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Otts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Allman Cemetery. Visitation is Friday at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Ms. Cook was born in Lamar County, Ala., on March 25, 1918, to the late Daniel and Minnie Allman. She was a member of Allman Chapel CME Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Murray Cook; brothers, Arthur, Loy, Ernest, Moses, Mathis, Willie and Robert Allman; and sisters, Richie Thompson, Ann Hillman, Lucille Truelove and Wilma Carter. She is survived by her sons, Robert Cook of Springfield, Va., Dominico Lee, of Va.; daughter, Martha Medows of New Brunswick, N.J.; brother, Eugene Allman of Sulligent; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Pennington was born July 19, 1960, to Rodie Hester and the late James Ridgeway. She was a member of Full Gospel Worship Center in Vernon, Ala. She was a nurse. She is survived by her husband, Harold Pennington of Demascus; son, James David Ridgeway of Vernon, Ala.; daughters, Christina Feltman of Fulton, Dawn Guyton of Vernon; stepsons, James Harold Pennington of Sulligent, Ala., Coy Lee Pennington of Demascus; stepdaughter, Wendy Wolfe of Sulligent; brother, Fred Ridgeway of Benton, Ark.; sister, Wanda White of Millport and 14 grandchildren.

Mr. Gardner was born July 26, 1951, in Millport, Ala. He retired from Weyerhaeuser and was a member of Tabernacle CME Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Gardner. He is survived by his mother, Sallie Mae Richardson of Reform; wife, Dana Gardner of Millport; daughters, Angel Cunningham and Na’shema Cunningham, both of Millport, Telena Henderson of Columbus and Brittney Brock of Liberty; sons, Robert Gardner of Tuscaloosa, Tarrell Stewart of New York; sisters, Bessie Lee Edwards and Annie Windham, both of St. Louis, Mo., Barbara White of St. Louis, Ill., and Rosie Trimuel of Columbus; brothers, Robert E. Gardner of Ethelsville and Charles Gardner of Centerville, Ill., and five grandchildren.

ETHELSVILLE, Ala. — Samuel Turner, 68, died Jan. 11, 2013, in Jacksonville, Fla. Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at El Bethel Baptist Church with R.C. Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Strawbridge Cemetery. Visitation is today from 2-7 p.m. at Lee-Sykes Funeral Home. Mr. Turner was born April 26, 1944, to the late Wash and Lena Turner. He was an ordained minister and established a church in Ethelsville in 1982. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings. Survivors include his children, Ronnie, Cheryl, Calvin, Samuel, Quinton and Sandra; siblings, Noland Turner, Haymen Turner, Bonell Turner, Imornia Turner Ingram, Richard Turner, Elizabeth Turner and Isaac Turner; 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Ronnie Foster, Samuel A. Turner, Colin Adams, Calvin Cockrell, Quintin Turner and Brice Adams.

She was employed as a seamstress in a garment plant. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jackie McLemore.
