He died on Dec. 2, 2001, at his residence. Tony Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in the Walnut Creek United Methodist Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Popwell Mims of Clanton. son, Johnny Eugene Mims of Clanton; two daughters, Tina Corley of Jemison and Kim Smith of Maplesville; father, Thomas Mims Jr. of Clanton; mother, Marie Mims of Clanton; two sisters, Carolyn Martin of Clanton and Ann King of Clanton; and five grandchildren.

Velma (Mims) Jones, 84 and resident of Clanton, died Thursday, August 21. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 24 at 3:00 p.m. at Temple Church Assembly of God in Clanton with Pastor Billy J. Cotton officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with Prattville Memorial Chapel directing. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband Wiley Amon Jones and her sister, Clara Driver. She is survived by one son, Joseph Harold Jones of Clanton, and one daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Bernie Leedy of Atlanta. Pallbearers will be Joseph Jones, Dale Jones, Tod Jones, Rick Lowe, Jim Blocker and Jones Blocker. Mrs. Jones will lie-in-state two hours prior to the services at Temple Church assembly of God on Sunday afternoon at which time the family will receive friends.

Morris Moatts, a former local civic and political leader and business owner, died Thursday July 31 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery after a long-term illness. He was 72. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Clanton First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Clanton City Cemetery. Moatts, a Clanton resident, may best be remembered for serving as Chilton County's Circuit Clerk for 18 years and as well as owning and operating his florist shop Pinedale Gardens for 42 years. In 2001 he was recognized in a resolution by the Alabama Senate for his service to the citizens of Chilton County, which includes his leadership roles as first executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Chilton County Red Cross and chairman of the Chilton County Republican Party. "I worked with Morris on several projects and he was as dedicated to Chilton County as he could be, " Probate Judge Bobby Martin said Friday. "Morris worked hard for the county. He believed we were the best and he believed we could be better." Some of Moatts' community projects included securing federal grants to build a library in Clanton, chairing the committee for the Chilton Medical Center to acquire property, which brought physicians to Clanton, helping develop the Peach Park Museum and Gardens and helping organize the Chilton Assistance Center and Merchant Association of Clanton. He was also the first recipient of the Chamber of Commerce's Citizen of the Year award. Moatts graduated from Chilton County High School at age 16 and served in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War. He attended Clanton First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his brothers Paul Moatts and his wife Jewel of Clanton and Herbert Hoover Moatts and his wife Geneva of Birmingham; sister-in-law Frances Moatts of Clanton.

Mr. Moatts was preceded in death by his father Rudolph Moatts; mother Annie Bell Teel Moatts; sisters Bernice Morrison, Blanche Moore and Ruby Johnson; brothers Adolphus Moatts and Ray Moatts; niece Teresa Reed. Mr. Moatts was Chilton County Circuit Clerk for 18 years and operated Pinedale Gardens for 42 years.
